Winds of Fate: Elspeth discovers her mage powers and leaves Valdemar to seek out someone to teach her to use them. Accompanied by Skif and their Companions, Cymry and (is it Gwena?), they travel towards the home of Kerowyn's cousin (uncle?), who is a teacher of the White Winds school. He feels unqualified, so he sends her onward. When Elspeth discovers that the Companions have been herding her in the direction they want her to go, she (in her most stubborn manner) heads off in a completely different direction, into the D'horisha plains and from there to the mysterious Hawkbrothers, where she meets Darkwind K'Shena. K'shena vale (Darkwind's home) has troubles, however, and Darkwind (a scout who has given up magework) is disinclined initially to help Elspeth. The K'shena heartstone has been cracked, and Darkwind's father, Starblade, is under the control of an evil mage, Mornelith Falconsbane, and has driven Darkwind away from him. Elspeth helps Darkwind in his fight against Falconsbane, and Darkwind agrees to help Elspeth to learn to use her extremely powerful mage gift. However, because Macintoshes are God (Goddess) , I found IDT, which caters to the Mac and made life a lot easier.... though we have to use my dad's account. Oh well, unless he decides to steal *my* name, things should be okay. (The name on the account is his, but I'll steal it, and if he decides to steal it back, I just won't be too happy ::wicked laugh::) Okay, let's get cracking. Undine: thanks so much for clearing things up about the book drive and Pterry Discworld thingamabobbits; 'soons Waldenbooks opens this morning, I'll roll myself over there to pick up a copy of a book or two in the series :) Jake: if you're running the address end of the book drive (like, where we send our stuff to) then I guess as long as Debbie doesn't mind a bit of meddling, count me in; it was a nice idea. ObMisty: uhhhn... if Kechara's ability to mindspeak could have been crippled enough to reduce her ability to a more normal level, style a la Haghleigh, why didn't Urtho just do it, instead of putting himself through all that mess? I know that I wouldn't have done it, out of sentimentality, but Urtho was a Mago of the first order. It should have followed that he would be willing to do the more expedient thing, if necessary. Was it for er potential, that he kept her around, or for love? Because on the other hand, "love" has a few funny twists. A mother in Africa doesn't stop her baby girl from being circumcised, not nearly often enough Wait, I think I've got-- -- ::sigh:: no, I don't got it. I think it was something speculative about Valyn being bi or shaych. Are any side effects of 'natural' reincarnation? Ma'ar was a mad dog who lost his sanity after a few eons; why? Was it like slow deterioration, like a piece of radioactive carbon-14, with his mind simply not being able to cope with living so long? (Stefen/ 'Lendel had memories of his other lifetime, too; would that make him lose his sanity, had he come back again? Actually... his last lifetime's insanity was erased while his memories remained. That doesn't make very much sense. Maybe it's just me. Touching the Havens; the perfect joy that let no sadness or ravaged grief abide in the bitter soul... might be an explanation, anyway.) Was it the effects of th Void that made Ma'ar/Leareth/Falconsbane fall apart? Could a mage simply shred another's soul away?If that's so, I don't think I want to live in that universe, thanks Firesong to Falconsbane, Mornelithe lost his slimy soul in the bargain... hmmm. That suggests some interesting theological possibilities. What happened to the shreds of his soul? Or was it his spirit? Is there a difference? Firesong thought-sang Mornelithe never to come back except as a cloud of gnats -- so did Falconsbane still have a chance at reincarnation, or was he just rippd out of the Pattern? Things are a little confised. On the other hand, Falconsbane was already "dead," sort of. This leads us back to the Original Question of whether the Gods exist because/ are empowered by our minds. Were there Gods in the days of the Mage Wars? wait, no there must have been, or else there wouldn't have been that scene with the Shin'a'in goddess "She had limited her power, as had all the gods." Something like that. So why didn't they just step in and help, like Iftel's Gods do? Was it that Urtho and Ma'ar were just instruments of some kind of heavenly war between the desecration/ destruction-gods? Could a mage just really rip someone else's soul out of the Pattern? (I'm reiterating, sorry. And call the Pattern whatever you call the Pattern, anyway; I've been re-reading Robert Jordan) Could s/he stretch her/his own soul too far from his bdy, and have another creature just come along and snip the tie between the body and the spirit-- then if that creature attacked the fleeing soul, would that mage be lost? As in, forever? Because in Tarma and Kethry's world, souls were swapped, fiddled with, etc. all at the whim of a demon. Thalkarsh. Or would the mage might just come back to their body with an *enormous* headache and suffer lots of mage-shock? (I don't think so, but anyone's opinion is valid...) How long can a mage potentially live, anyway? Starwind and Moondance were pretty old, I guess, but we might never find out about the Heralds.Savil, Kilchas, and Lissandra were all killed. Though I think that at least one of those deaths could have been prevented (Arrgh, I just realized. No puns on the sheep!) Heh. Hindsight is always 20/20. I'm not so sure that I would have done something so different than Van did. He was already down to his dregs, and that would have hurt his resources and weakened him further for possible attack by Leareth or whatever other nice enemies he'd been collecting at the time. And that'd leave Valdemar's strongest Herald-Mage (I think there's something to that effect, "the last and strongest" in the conversation between Leareth and Van at their confrontation) out of commisssion. I don't think Savil could keep up what Van did and who he was, like he could... Okay, that' s enough. I'm starting to sound bitchy. And huffy. Someone hit me in the back of the head with a board But if I'm just rehasing old issues, Kory or someone (unless I rehash the OS wars, of course :) ) bash me real quick and I'll quit babbling. (was it Kory who was complaining about newbies and how they reinflame what you guys just finished discussing? whatever.) Like I am now. Bye! Tylendel and Vanyel's served a purpose: to make Van become a H-M. Randale and wossname's served a purpose: To keep him alive long enough, and for Jisa to be brought in, so eventually Elspeth could save everyone (remember, gods can most likely see both ways). The Talia/Dirk lifebond was needed for Talia to survive, without which the vital negotiations between Karse and Valdemar would never have started, and more immediately to warn everyone of the true dangers. Comparitively, the S/K/Y Lifebond was next to pointless: NOne of the characters were truly vital to the story; none of them have done anything important; in fact, they could all have died in infancy, and Talia would--ok, I found only one place they were needed, to save Talia...but a lifebond? Don't be scared away by our ridiculousness at the moment -- we're currently waiting for a new Misty book at the moment and right now we're like a family that's been driving in a car for ten hours together. I'm just waiting for Mommy Mel (The illustrious Melanie Harper, our List Mistress) to turn around and say "If I have to come back there... you'll regret it!" > But there is one thing...mention of a parody written by uh...Jake? > caught my interest, it sounds funny and I hope I didn't miss out. :) *laughs* I knew this would happen. BLACK GRYPHON was very strongly done, and it had a powerful ending. I was impressed, and expected a powerful second and third book in the series. Unfortunately, WHITE GRYPHON (a.k.a. How To Host A Murder Misty-Style) was weak. Sure, it had the same CHARACTERS, but the plot was gone. Most of Misty's books CAN be read as standalone, but this was beginning to sound like the GRYPHON ADVENTURES series. And besides Stormcloud (who first noticed this) and I, wasn't it odd that the two books Misty wrote at the same time (STORM RISING and WHITE GRYPHON) were both murder mysteries, basically? *sigh* Uncle Jake's advice to Mercedes Lackey, installment #2: Write one trilogy at a time. Then SILVER GRYPHON rolled around and I was disgusted. *sigh* Perhaps it was because the book had no identifiable "villain" of sorts (like Master Dark or Tharakash or Falconsbane, etc.). It was more like BLACK GRYPHON: THE NEXT GENERATION. It was a fizzle to the end of the trilogy. I found the book terrible. I still say she wrote it badly on purpose so everyone would drink up STORM BREAKING (which I ask, Undine, is it out yet?) when it came out. The MAGE WARS series just seems like vague sketchy material for background of the MAGE STORMS series, and they wanted to tie two trilogies together, so Misty and Larry wrote the MAGE WARS because of that. Larry said somewhere that STORM BREAKING ties into SILVER GRYPHON in three ways: Place, Character, and something else. (Stormcloud? Help!) *sigh* Let's manipulate the fans some more! I'm going to go reread the Last Herald Mage books again. I need to get out of this feeling. They're only two of my LONG list of favorite characters. I'd also like to meet Andrew "Ender" Wiggin from "Ender's Game" series by Orson Scott Card. He faced a lot of hardship as a child, destroyed an alien race without even knowing, and then flew off to the stars, forever young. The combat scenes and the psychological problems of young Zhaneel were magnificent. White Gryphon was VERY boring at the beginning - it wasn't interesting until the end, and even then, it wasn't too imaginative. And I agree with you, that the plot of Silver Gryphon might have made a nice sub-plot in a different book, perhaps more thought-through than what she did in the book. Of course, LHM is still my favorite... It gives the history of Velgarth a little more relevance in the plot. I'd really like to see what happens in Storm Breaking - I can't wait until it comes out!
