So I can now (finally) join the disscusion on it's (lack of) merits. I LIKED IT! (distant thud) Uh, Jake? Could somebody go wake up Jake please? Hope you didn't hurt yourself passing out like that Jake, sorry and I'll try to give more warning in future! Now lets see, where were we? oh yes SGryphon. Well it's not an action & character packed read, but then there's enough action to drive the plot and the characters are limited by the nature of the story which, IMNSHO, is a story of coming of age/getting your parents to accept you as an adult. I was strongly reminded of many of Andre Norton's books and of several of the "juveniles' by RA Heilen (sorrry Cynned)(I'm into 'r' today) and since I love all those and reread frequently I had no problem. I would certainly agree that this is not LHM but so what? Havn't we had a lot of people complaining about David Eddings (alegedly) only having one plot/style/story and using it over and over ? I'm even more of the opinion that Misty's mistake here, assuming she has made one for the sake of argument, is that she has tried to make a "trilogy" out of three books that didn't really form one. Perhaps pressure from publishers? They are known to have a liking for trilogys and such! I (Not very) humbly suggest that a better order might have been something like; Mage Wars Trilogy: Purple Gryphon-Story of rise of Ma'ar and Urtho's creation of the Gryphons, etc up to the point where the king and his court did the bugout boogie. Aquamarine Gryphon-Story of Skan's young life, early years of the war, Skan meets Drake, Cinnabar etc. up to point shortly before Black Gryphon. Black Gryphon-ah, you know this one! Clan K'leshya series: Octarine Gryphon-Tells how mixed bag of refugees we saw at end of Black Gryphon united to form new society around core formed by Clan K'leshya. also deals with crossing of wilderness and founding of White Gryphon(the city)[could be two books here] White Gryphon, Silver Gryphon- these two we have. To be continued? (We still have a 200 year or so gap!) BUT Misty didn't see it that way. BTW, I started this message this a.m. and I saw just now in my Inbox that somebody thinks that Tad And Blade had no change in SGryphon- I submit the words Blooded and Tempered for you to consider. I also point out that the story is as much about the relationships they have with their fathers as anything else and that there has been a great change there. Finally, Just what did ya'll want? "The aging Skan using his Final Strike to protect White Gryphon from the evil horrdes by blocking the pass and wiping out their mage-leader?":) Also got Storm Rising finally but I have only read it twice so far so I'm not ready to post yet. Centaur was my favorite. As for the VR books, are you referring to the Mode series? The first one isn't bad and has a decent discussion of Julia and Mandelbrot sets, and the evolution reconciliation argument. The rest are useless. His discussion of chaos theory is pathetic, and better served by Jurassic Park (Michael Crichton! Bleahhh!), or better yet, Arthur Clarke's Ghost of the Grand Banks is better at Mandelbrots even. Vampire books: I really liked Chelsea Yarbro's _Path of the Eclipse_. The other St. Germain books that I've read are so-so. Saberhagen's _Talisman_ was good, and some of the others. You brought up similar criticisms I had about it, although you couched them with positive points. The main points I made about Silver Gryphon and the series in general was that the storyline over the three books weak / limited, there was no actual villain, and poor characterization. It's a "feelgood" plot for a series that started out with an "action" plot. If we charted these books, in my opinion, they would go like: GOOD| * KEY: MP = Magic's Price (for comparison) | \__ | *_ BG = The Black Gryphon | \__ | * WG = The White Gryphon | \___ BAD | * SG = The Silver Gryphon ----+-------------------- | MP BG WG SG (yeah, it's not a straight line, but it's ascii. It's supposed to be.) >I would certainly agree that this is not LHM but so what? Havn't we had a >lot of people complaining about David Eddings (alegedly) only having one >plot/style/story and using it over and over ? Yes, but what Eddings did and what you claim Misty would do are two different things. If Misty wrote like Eddings, we would have a second trilogy about a Herald-Mage called Lothiel who battled ANOTHER incarnation of Ma'ar and died and sacrificed himself again. Eddings had the same plotline twice, and (I think) he said he knows, he did it on purpose. Misty (hopefully) would never fall to that level. Misty tried a new approach and IMO it didn't work. >I'm even more of the opinion that Misty's mistake here, assuming she has >made one for the sake of argument, is that she has tried to make a >"trilogy" out of three books that didn't really form one. Perhaps pressure >from publishers? They are known to have a liking for trilogys and such! My theory once again: She and "Larry" want us to buy Storm Breaking in oooodles. She was working on two trilogies at once, and I'm sure one of them (Mage Wars) suffered. > Octarine Gryphon-Tells how mixed bag of refugees > we saw at end of Black Gryphon united to form new > society around core formed by Clan K'leshya. also > deals with crossing of wilderness and founding of > White Gryphon(the city)[could be two books here] NO! Bleah! Bleah! Bleah! Coming of age--it would have been a good standalone, yes, but 'twasnt a good ending to a trilogy, which I judged it as. > Finally, Just what did ya'll want? "The aging Skan using his Final >Strike to protect White Gryphon from the evil horrdes by blocking the pass >and wiping out their mage-leader?":) That would have been a better ending than the one in SG. Even if Misty put a VILLAIN in SG, that would have been good. But no, it was Tad and Blade against nature. Even the wyrsa were nature. This is a bad close to the series. >Bippy lives! It only gets a little annoying when each time he seems like each time he tied up a loose end, he starts another strand, and you're still not sure whether that loose end really *is* tied up: but that's just getting some kind of income out and keeping the audience in suspense, which is the mark of a writer with a solid plotline and good market strategy (or a writer just being a money scheming oppotunist ::laugh::). Like the Forsaken being reincarnated by the Dark One, and which one is which in incarnation, and even *if* they have been reincarnated, and which phrasing would sugest what. Another example could be Moraine's death. Some die-hard 'uns are still debating whether she's dead. If you're talking about the _Mode_ series, here's a good example of target audience, which I think was probably written for younger teenage girls. But here my opinion is prejudiced, since it was aimed for whatever group I fall into. I liked it a lot. It most certianly is *not* about puns. I got so sick of them. I gave them to my baby brother, and *he* has a ball over the puns, while I watch, with a sort of fascinated horror. He builds his characters very well here (he's actually a real author here, in other words. Don't let Xanth disillusion you; he really can write very well. And the money goes to good places (other than his pocket ) Even though I really HATED that author's note he stuck at the end of Virtual Mode. After he softens us all up, he then goes on to say "it was only infatuation" and *then* after doing that, he goes on to call it love, and give every indication that it'll last for quite a long time. I wish he'd make up his mind on that. Well, yes...but, IMO, you have to think the Gods are the ones making the lovebonds...the Haighleigh think so, at least, and a Valdemaran priest think's it's travesty to NOT Marry a lifebound couple, so, yes, I think they ARE matchmakers. And a lifebond for people who don't, well, truly deserve it isn't _right_...Keren, Ylsa, and Sherrill, while all having purpose plot-wise, ahve next to no impact world-wise...Talia, though, does. (No, I'm not perfect, but what I want is a rolemodel with my bad parts fixed. *grin*). Characters I'd like to meet? - Sci-fi: Any of the Long/Howard family (or associates) from Heinlein's books. - Elsewhere: Tannim, Shar'mali, Tylendel, Silverfox, Cthinliss, Diana!, Granny Weatherwax (Pratchett), Elisena (Susan Dexter's Winter King series), Corwin of Amber (Roger Zelazny).. and a few others. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re: Piers Anthony. Yes, I've read pretty much all of his books too (barring the interminable Xanth series). His early [serious] books are his best, and IMO are quite good. His Incarnations of Immortality series is good - see especially _To Ride a Pale Horse_ and _Being a Green Mother_. His Manta series (Omnivore etc) border on brilliant. Tarot is also good. Admittedly all seen through about 5 yrs hindsight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re Fluff & sigs & stuff: Please please folks - I've unsubscribed from about 5 mailing lists today (having been away for 3 days & not generally keeping up anyway) - please keep the fluff & flame level down, or at least don't waffle. Now if said person is criminal(like the > rapist/murderer in Arrows Flight) or if they attack first, then it is > reasonable. Just because you _can_ do something, doesn't mean you > _should_. Err, nope. Spying on people's minds is one thing. Using the Mindspeaking gift to save yourself when attacked is entirely another. If it had been a fetching or a fire-starting gift, there'd be no problem.. And even in the situation where you said it was reasonable (which was the only sit. where I was advocating it), Kero never did. She -never- used her abilities offensively, which in my book is severely limiting her options. A blind spot, as someone else said. Consider - what if Griffon had never used his fire-starting offensively? Or Lavan? Elspeth or Di Tregarde (changing worlds slightly) never hesitated and they're rather ethical. (Though I do have to admit Di has a strong streak of practicality that I absolutely love, after reading all about the oh-so-honourable heralds). Incidentally Glith - can you format your responses a little better? Start them on a new line and put an empty line between your stuff and the one you're replying to. It makes it much easier to read and then you don't need to write in caps (which are horrible to read) to make your stuff stand out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glith also posted the bit from AOL about how writers portray homosexuality generally (ie as a male-female couple, more or less as wish-fulfillment). I'm kinda of two minds about this. Certainly Misty doesn't do it. 'Lendel and Van were both pretty masculine (remember, they were only 16/15 at the time Lendel died). And unlike the poster of that original message, I -enjoy- reading books where the [alternative] sexuality is taken for granted, even if it's in-character questioned. Nor do I think that Misty had her shaych couples more off-stage than her het ones - it's just that she doesn't write bodice ripper stuff. As it is, there're enough scenes and suggestion in Misty's stuff to scandalize a few people I know. Besides, I don't subscribe to the notion (that a lot of shaych people in real life seem to) that there is something fundamentally different about the way a shaych couple interrelate and the way a het couple do. There may well have been in the 'olden days' where women -were- the passive (in a number of senses) half of the couple; and where 'out' shaych people were effeminate, but now? Now, in my circle, women are equal in partnerships (actually I'd probably say slightly more than equal, but hey.) and being effeminate ('campy' in the gay community) is definitely the minority of the shaych male community, just as being masculine ('butch' in the gay community) is definitely not the stereotype of the female shaych community. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cennyd wrote: > A lingering voice ghosts back to say, "Learn to snip! That or the fact that they [or she particularly] had an exceptionally strong mind, or good mental shields, or is very secure (apart from the phobia that shows up in the next book StT). Or perhaps (no reason, but possible) the Goddess the Wiccans worship, stretched forth her hand.. Cheers, Kerry. Or you can go directly to it by pointing your browser at "http://www.udel.edu/kenny/cookbook.html" I am eager to get more recipes. Right now I have only got two of them from Seranna. They are pretty tasty looking (Seranna are you Cubana?) and I really haven't time to do the kind of Velgarthan context I plan to do later. But this way you can see where the page is heading and have some fun. =) Ok, on to the other stuff: On Mon, 15 Jul 1996, Jake wrote: >>>Which brings me to a thought.
