The bouncy, sprightly tune (mind you, I have never heard the song) is an expression of the trusting, open nature of the children, while the words are the dark, horrific part of life that children never see until it is too late. It sounds like one of my favorite French noels, "Ils Etaient Trois P'tits Enfants." The song is very catchy and happy and innocent sounding, but when you listen to the words, you realize that it is the story of three little kids who are butchered by an innkeeper and turned into salt-pork. They are eventually brought back to life by St-Nicolas, but it is still a really gruesome song. This particular style and genre was very popular at one time. >>>Dosent anyone around here use a nice, decent UNIX-based system?<<< Actually, I do. I use my university account for all my email and web development. They run Sun Unix on the mainframes, and that is the platform I use. I use Pine for email, ircII2.8 for IRC, Pico for text editing, raw FTP, and even a text-based unix gopher. The only thing that I don't use unix for are my academic papers (Word 6) and web-crawling (Netscape 2.02). BTW, for those of you who are worried about how hard it might be to create a home page on the web, I can tell you that I do all my development with a basic text editor (Pine) and a browser to view the resulting files, and I have never had any problems. I have found that I can convert an existing file to html in no time flat, with no need for any of the filters and development programs. Speaking of which (and to make this list-related *grin*), I have added a magewar page to my home page. Go to "http://www.udel.edu/kenny/green.silences.html" and follow the link to "My friends." From there, you can follow the link to my Magewar page. I dreamt of placing strands of life into a diamond stitch because of all this talk about braiding. I was working with purple and silver. Just thought that it was interesting to mention. (anyone who does lanyard will know what I'm talking about; it's also called the round braid) All right, I'm going to agree with the God of Parody here (though that may not be such a smart move, since no one knows where the Goddess of Ratings and Humour will turn to create her next victim...) Thank you, Jake. (that was me that wrote the original post, by the way. Just to clarify, since you put "(someone wrote)" at the begining of your post. That's my fault, though. Must develop that sig, instead of just saying "goodbye from Kim") "Just accept it"??? Things are supposed to be coherent here, you know! There isn't a scene where Beth feels anything to indicate she'd brushed up with the Lady, or Lord for that matter. I guess you could say that They can be subtle, but there isn't any sort of indication that lets you assume that conclusion. ( ) If you want to argue that this only leaves room for a prequel/sequel, where Someone has decided to pick this one Wiccan to protect for some reason (such as "she was going to play a big role in the future") fine. Which brings me to another question (here's my ObMisty) Which Deity helped her (if you're arguing divine protection), the human one or the elven one, or are they the same? To paraphrase a really good quote "for are not all God and Goddess One?" Sorry, guys, I couldn't remember the exact quote, so I ad-libbed it. If you want to say that Ellen Guon can't write, you can do that, too. Just don't say something that doesn't scan is still acceptable. And one more thing, no one keeps up shields that are as strong as the one that would have bounced Ria's whatever- you-call-it-glare-or-attack, as an everyday practice, unless you're paranoid. Okay, Bethie might have done something like prepare the night before or something and add a little something to her shields, especially after the attack by the drunk person. I was sorta hoping for someone to flame or something and tell me that I missed a reference. Maybe something like "in scene x, page whatever, Beth parts, telling Kory that she'll reinforce her protections" ::sigh:: I guess not. I wonder if the loose end (as it stands) will make Kory change his name... (Poor Kory. in two consecutive e-mails I've picked on him to wonder what he looks like -- heavy blond hair with emeraldly green huge eyes, high cheekbones, oval face, and pointy ears? -- and now to wonder if he'll change his *name* Heh, heh heh. BTW, no one tell me that "emeraldly" isn't a word; it is now. ;P) I'm sorry. Just that I'm a little sensitive about brushing something off with "she's a witch, it's all right" Oh, BTW, in response to Summersong's post, which went like this: > >Okay, I read Bedlam's Bard books once each, and does it mention in either >of them whatever happened to Ria afterwards? I know she's kind of lost her >mind-amnesia, but does she ever recover? She never came out of it. Eric sees her in one of his trances, and before that, he wonders about her and mentions she never came out of it. (I think they were trying for another sequel loophole. Maybe it's just hearing too much about Octarian Gryphons and Oathblinded things ) I always wondered why Misty would do something like that, especially since they'd finally started to portray Ria as human She would have sacrificed her life to keep her father from taking her power. You can argue it was pride, which you still have to admire, or you can say she did it to keep from having her power turned against Eric, (maybe the rest of the world too) and so that would mean she actually cared about him... even should it only ha' been "Power calls to Power" See ya later, alligators. The Mode books were the first series I read, and I loved them. More for older readers though. My mom read Virtual and almost had a cat at some of the stuff in there.Windshadow had read them too, and my mom forbid her to read the rest. Let's see. I read all the Xanth books and liked them. (Don't kill me please! :Put's on flame-protectant, coconut resistant suit) I use puns all the time. However, he is very different from Misty, and I'd rather have her anyday. I've read, of his: Xanth Mode Apprentice/Adept(majorly confused me with all the science. Must re-read) Incarnations(Good, but seemed recycled. I liked Green Mother, For Love of Evil, Tangled Skein best) Firefly(*not* for young people. Someone suggested it and I started it without looking for a plot summary. Whoa!) Mercycle IIPTNIG w/Misty Through the Ice Shade of the Tree Kilobyte(This might be the virtual reality you're talking about) I think that's it. *********************************************************** Who would I like to meet? Well, Talia, Kris, Dirk and Van from Misty. Almost all of her characters actually. Colene from PA's Mode series. Oh, drat, brainfreeze. What is his name?...mmmpphh, help? My fave character from Katherine Kurtz's Deryni books. Healer with curly red hair, ahhh, I can't remember anyone's name in that series! I'll go find it. Rhys! Sheesh. Need to re-read those too... ************************************************************************ Family stuff- What about me and Windshadow for slightly insane sisters? Twins maybe? We're already sisters. ************************************************** Oh, and Warrl's cousin is Rris. Sorry, but my whole spring semster this year was spent writing assembly programs. The Heather Alexander one off of MAGIC MOONDUST and MELANCHOLY? Or the Leslie Fish one off of THE OATHBOUND? And I guess people dislike HERALD'S CREED because of those goddess-damned midi tunes. Misty couldn't get someone to play the trumpet? Eng's midi movements are bleah, especially in a tape that's about FANTASY music. Her instruments sound canned. Now I know where I heard it before. I saw a move, in the 70's (I think), called 'The Last Remake of Beau Geste', with Marty Feldman.
