wonderful! Have plenty of tissues handy while reading. Loved the FAQ 
name. I think I saved the Pterry list I sent to Jake. If not I'll send

Claris, you asked which Pterry to read. After you've gotten a feel for 
his zaniness with the first 2, try _Mort_ or _Reaperman_ both of which 
feature Death (his horse's name is Binky<giggle>)

_Haunted Waters_ by Marie Pope Osborne. It's a weepy love story.

Requisite Misty: While rereading WoC for Kory's FAQ, I found info that 
says once a mage nears Master class, his/her level is more a matter of 
power than of skill. I also read that mage schools acted as resevoirs 
storing power for the Masters and Adepts to use. Any guesses how they 
store it?

Everyone (seemingly) has been talking about adepts and nodes, so I thought
I'd throw my $.02 in. Here is what I have gleaned from Misty's Velgarth books:

Apprentice/Journeyman: pulls power from within, or directly from the earth
to recharge. cannot channel energy from external power source directly into
a spell.

Master: can pull energy from ley lines for spell casting to a limited
extent, but still primarily depends on stored energy. IIRC, some mage
schools build a reservoir of energy for thier masters and adepts to draw on.

Adept: can pull energy directly for use in spells. most advanced can
directly tap nodes, which are too powerful for masters to be able to handle.

This is a summary, if people want I'll go and find the sections I drew this
from for textev. (I'm feeling too lazy to do so right now.)

Now for a completely off topic subject. Have you looked to see if you have
cookies on your computer? According to the Wall Street Journal, several
companies are using a file called cookies.txt to track who uses their
services, how often, and precisely what they look at. If you look in the
directory that includes the software you use to access the internet, you
will find a file called cookies.txt if you have used one of these services.
By reading the file, you can find out who is doing it. Personally, when I
find who is doing it, I tend to aboid going back to that service. Those who
are definately using it are:

Infoseek - a search engine
Hotbot - a search engine
Disney - Do I have to tell you who they are?!
Amazon.com - an online bookstore
www.books.com - an online bookstore
realaudio - an online electronics store

I do NOT like the idea tha someone is tracking what I do. (Have you seen Big
Brother around lately...?)

Um...um...I KNOW we've had an example of mages pouring energy for a nice 
little resovoir...or maybe I'm thinking if Jordan's Eye of the World. 
They might do it the same way the tayledras make heartstones, or how 
artificial nodes are made...

BTW it wasn't me, so there's another October-born lurking out there...

And for whoever's keeping the Personality List, I'm an INFJ, a very much
confirmed one. (ie INFJ came out for the three times I took the test (each
with many years in-between), unlike a friend who turned out to be INFJ the
first time, ENFJ the second, and exactly in the middle the third!)

And now, some Misty-related food for thought: By now it is pretty much
acknowledged that Heralds can be reincarnated as Companions. How about
non-Heralds? And I don't mean a Healer or a Bard, but just a common
Valdemaran. A Herald is offered the Havens and a chance to return after
death. Will a common Good Person[TM], who might have been a Herald but was
born without Gifts, be offered the Havens as well? And, perhaps,
reincarnation, this time blessed with Gifts to be a Herald? (BTW was it 
Kris's mother who wanted to be a Herald but didn't get Chosen? Might she 
be given a chance in a next life?) And what of a Bad Person[TM]? The 
Velgarthan equivalent of Hell? 

Another question (which someone asked not long ago, I think): can a
Valdemaran be reincarnated as, say, a Tayledras? Hmm since Starwind and
Moondance (do I have them right?) recognized Stefen as Tylendel, I s'pose
the Tayledras have reincarnation as well... A cross-species reincarnation?
(Treyvan/Treven??) And does a person get to choose what to come back as? 

Hmmm I've lotsa questions after rereading LHM, but I think I'll stop for 
now - I'm starting to confuse myself!

Let's see if I can muddy the waters alittle<G>.  (Caution - assumptions ahead)

The Star-eyed taught the Taylendras how to create and use heartstones after
the mage war.  Since nodes are weaker than heartstones (due to the outflow)
and wouldn't contain the same pressure, the nodes would, presumably, be easy
to access after heartstones.  

The next question is:  how often do nodes form >naturally<?  Big lee lines
would have appropriated smaller streams in their vicinity already, leaving
big gaps between lines, and the only mages actively moving lines seem to be
the Taylenras.  For a node to form, there would need to be some kind of
natural catastrophe (like an earthquake) to get two lines together, and if
both were powerful, you'd have a dangerous node.  

This leads to:  how much of the inability to use nodes would come from
conditioning?  If you're told something is dangerous (and see someone go up
in a two day pillar of flame to boot!) you would be very cautious when
accessing power.  Too much conditioning and you would be unable to access
nodes ("you are what you think").  Van and Savil might be very open-minded,
very confident (or stupid<G>) or the Herald-mages might never have been
exposed to nodes, and not know anything about them to prejudice them against
the training.

Given all that, I've misplaced my "physics of magic" (I wish!) and my
theories may be totally up the wall!  But hey, it's on topic<G>.

Read a book? =)  Seriously, there is a lot of gay lit out there and a lot 
of it is about relationships, including the beginnings.  In fact, could 
luck out, since a very large body of auto-biographical literature on gay 
men is available and, almost without exception, these books include 
detailed accounts of the author's first courtship/seduction etc.

Well, from my observation, and from the observations of others, gay 
relationships are generally much more physical right from the beginning.  
Also, they tend to go through the stages you mentioned, but at a highly 
accelerated speed.  As Ms. Behavior wrote, gay men don't have to worry 
about which date to use for their anniversary: the day they first met, 
their first date, the first time they had sex, or the day that they 
decided they were really in love.  For many gay couples, these dates are 
all the same day.  While this is an exageration, it is still very close 
to the truth.  BTW, Esmeralda, if you really want a great, and very 
funny, insight into the workings of gay and lesbian relationships and 
life, see if you can get your hands on Ms. Behavior's Gay and Lesbian 
Ettiquette book.  Every "family" member that I have ever lent my copy to 
has said that Ms. B is spot on!  Not to mention a ROTFLMAO riot! =)

both forms are the 2nd person singular informal.  Thou is nominative case 
and thee is accusative/dative.  Thy is genitive.  I don't know off-hand 
if there was ever a time when thou did not participate in the 
formal/informal relationship.  For you German speakers, the use of thou 
used to be the equivalent of "dutsen."

I think that the implication is that the White Winds school maintains its 
own reservoirs of power.  In OBr, Kethry voice mentions that the reason 
she can't shield her group against the Court Mage who ambushes them on 
their way back into Rethwellan is that "I haven't tapped into enough of 
the shielding spells to know how, yet" (OBr, 198).  Also, the Adept 
Manifestation seems to have been a link to a power source: "It fountained 
up...growing into a geyser of power and light and music....She felt the 
power fill her mind and give her soul great wings of fire" (OBr,192).  
This seems to suggest, in combination with the previous quote, that the 
connection is to some sort of power reservoir, but that it also is more 
than raw power.  There is the implication that Kethry can now "access" 
spells via her adept status.  Ones that she did not have access to 
before.  Since she makes explicit reference to them being White Wind 
spells, I think that we can infer that the power source is a proprietary 
creation of the White Wind school.  In my re-reading, I can't find any 
suggestion that Kethry ever used, or was really aware of, node magic.

Thessa, it doesn't really matter what order you read them.  They are 
pretty much stand-alone.  It helps, a little, in one or two cases if you 
have read another one previously, but it isn't really much of a 
difference.  My suggestion is just to pick a book and start with it.  I 
would personally suggest "Guards, Guards!," "Witches Abroad," or "Reaper 
Man."  I have read all of them except "Colour of Magic" and "Lords and 
Ladies."  And there was certainly no pattern or logic to the order.  I 
just bought them as I found them.

Lady Thessa, you left out one thing.  The "y" is generally prounced as an 
'uh' sort of sound (for the phoneticians that might be here, I think it 
is supposed to be a mid-central tense vowel).  In either case, it isn't 
exactly the same sound as in English.

Have any of you read "Tiger Burning Bright" by Misty,MZB,and Andre Norton?
I thought it was a great book, especially the characters. My favorite was
Shelyra. She was basically a tomboy, clan-sister to the gypsies, and
rescues the prince. I won't spoil it further for those of you who haven't
read it. Anywho(not a typo;this is deliberate), it's a GREAT book. Highly
recommended by moi.

Who started the whole Bippy the Mime business? Mimes are cool, but aren't
you over-doing it?

If you remember, from WoC, Hydona teaches Elspeth in specific how to
handle ley line energy without having it knock her silly, and there is a
specific ref. (I'm-+AT+-work, book-+AT+-home) to what can happen if an untrained
mage tries to handle ley line energy without being taught how.  Hydona
stops Elspeth from going to a larger ley line because she wants to teach
her how to handle ley line energy more safely, and to teach her how to use
little lines of power to their greatest effect before letting her tackle a
larger line.

So if Ancar got ahold of one of the major lines without knowing how, well,
it'd be like an electrician grabbing a live 440-v power line without
thinking about it.  *BAM*!  Of *course* he'd be knocked for a loop; he's
lucky that's *ALL* it did! <G>

Of course, Ancar's the Bad Guy, so he's supposed to be a little stupid...
And Hulda was trying to keep him under her thumb by telling him he could
make Adept class when all he would ever be was a low-level master...

sets...

Jake,  who is waking from his stupor.  She begins to hum the tune to _Ironic_
 to help him get back to real life.  He shakes his head and is finally mostly
back to normal,  when more of the MIW pour through the doorway.

My personal reason for this is that it does not
take much of a gift to steal something from
someone unwillingly than from learning how to do

StarEyed allows her priests/shamans the privelege
of using blood-sacrifices (with the sacrifice
being a willing one, therefore you get more
power) as when the leaders of all the clans got
together to ask the StarEyed to cleanse the
plains of the "monsters" and magic energy gone
wild.

Rembember Ancar could sense the nodes at the end
of the Winds trilogy, just couldn't use them

tapped into a node and it had gone
wild...something along the lines of burning for
days. (I'd have loved to have seen the fireworks,
but would have regretted losing an Adept because

I'm an INTJ.  I've taken different versions of the test four times.  Once I
came out ISTJ - that was in a seminar about job hunting, but the other three
times I came out INTJ.  Where did the statistic that only 1% of the American
population is INTJ come from? And does this mean U.S. population, or U.S. +
Canada + Latin America? (I had a friend in high school from Argentina who
continually corrected people who assumed that she wasn't "American").

My local SF bookstore (Bakka Books, Queen St. West, in case you're
wondering) puts up little employee book reviews on some books as they come
in.  The one for _Lions_ started with 'This man cannot write a bad book.'
I've gotta say, I agree with them.  I've been waiting impatiently for his
next book ever since I first read _The Summer Tree_ 12 years ago.  In case
anybody missed the point - Read His Books - Now!

Not necessarily; I think other schools teach you how to pull from nodes,
too; Hulda wasn't Tayledras trained, I'm sure. I don't think the Imperials
were, either, or the old Herald-Mages. <laugh> Although I agree that it
*is* a combination of training, and White Winds is something different
alltogether. And just one more thing-- if you'll never reach more than
Master class, then you won't be able to use the nodes anyway, Blood Path
Page or no.

This is jsut speculative, but ley lines and node energy are just *deposits*
of energy, so when she's pulling residual energy, she might very well be
pulling from "nodes" Of course, I could be wrong. I often am, since I don't
look things up. :)

That's becasue the potentials were different, like Kory said. *gryn*

No... she shielded the lines from him, he never *could* have used the
nodes, though because he had a bit of a temporary power boost from being a
Blood Path Mage, he could sense them (at least I *think* that's the reason,
feel free to bash me if you want). On the other paw, that final strike
thing he did at the end makes me question whether he had Adept potential
after all.
