After Kilchas' death, Van suspects foul play : "It _looked_ like an accident. Everyone else accepted it as an accident. But Van didn't -- couldn't -- believe that it was." Yfandes seconds his feels and it takes them several pages of discussion before they decide that : "[...] we may have been overreacting because we're tired and we're so used to treachery and ambush that we ignore other answers, love." However, after only a short time later, after Lissandras death Vanyel dismisses Savil's misgivings as lightly as others had dismissed his own concerning Kilchas' death, casually concluding that: "She's getting old and frightened of everything." This attitude surprised me so much that I originally believed that there was some outside influence at work, inciting people to look for mundane causes -- something along the lines of a Somebody Else's Problem field. I have found, however, no direct textual evidence to support this claim. Is this uncharacteristic attitude more easily explained by simple fatigue? ANFSCD: Mel mentioned : "Gay male fantasy writers? Try Samuel Delany". I would like to thank her for making me feel silly since _Stars in my Pocket like Grains of Sand_ is sitting on my desk directly in front of my eyes. Since Jeffery felt cheated by the gay sex in LHM, I'd really like to know what he feels about that book. His fantasy series Neveryon is supposedly quite good but I haven't yet had the time to read it myself. Got a printout of the earlier magewar and duels from Lady Jaguar's pages, will go for yours in a couple of minutes, Cenyydd. BTW, since my character's handling node-energy, I guess she ~is~ an Adept; she just doesn't think of it as 'doing magic' - as far as she knows, all ~she's~ doing is matter-energy conversions (also energy-matter & energy-energy) without wasting energy in stray radiation emissions. I don't know if this means she'd be an Undetectable Mage - what do you think, Cenyydd? Don't know what would happen if she had to interact with a Heartstone; closest thing to it that she's had to handle was acting as a matter-antimatter containment field until the circuitry was fixed...I don't have her affiliated with any one group yet; I figure she'd learn about them and make up her own mind. ;) ObMisty: Speaking of node energy, and magic, and detecting magic: IIRC, Hulda told Ancar she could detect his Gating attempts because of the way they affected ~her~ magics and the magic flows in the local area. Sayvil and Vanyel and the Tayledras (sp?) are constantly talking about energy flows, i.e., ley lines and nodes. Where in the electromagnetic spectrum would these energies be found? I suspect it's more toward the magnetic end, because of the fun things that can be done with magnets and compasses and Bermuda Triangles, or is it something more subtle, that can ~manifest~ as magnetism? Any ideas, comments, feedback? Thanks! Merry Meet and Merry Part and Mary Poppins, too! I tend to lean toward weariness because of the fact that Vanyel had just experienced the death of two(?) other herald - mages as a direct side effect of the guardian web he set up to protect Valdemar. With him as a pivot point on the web, it must have been terrible to experience the deaths of his fellow heralds. I tend to think that magical influence really isn't needed. I'm not saying that fatigue wasn't part of it, but an outside influence may be part of it. Remember that they learned in the Storm series that Ma'ar was making sure that all the little potential mages were eliminated as children. Part of this might have been a blanket disbelief that the deaths were anything but natural. Not just Heralds, though the profession does attract those stupid, selfless--erm, noble, wonderful personalties;> --------------------------- Whoah. Not much reply-abel email today. Ok, I'll go off on my own tangents;P First of all... 1. Cen, please add the blurb-writers who make stupid descriptions of the books to your Karma list, for those who get turned into swarms of gnats. Ever seen Lark and Wren? The back is *three parapgraphs* describing the first 60 of almost 500 pages! I first looked at the book and though "It takes Misty 500 pages to tell about a fiddling contest?!"...then I read it, and in a few minutes, the back of the book had nothing what-so-ever to do with the story! 2. I have two Loony Theories: A: Misty has collaborated with Pterry on all her books. Larry doesn't exist. I have evidence, too. First of all, the Death Bell, that rings without a clapper, has to be Old Tom, from the UNseen University! Then, when reading Lark and Wren, look at *this* quote, page 312: " he's cutting his own throat " ! And, of course, this theory is reasonable compared to loony theory two: B: Misty has Foresight, and has been putting the Misty List in from book 1. You have Talia and the Sheep Song in there, then Jervis's joke about the sheep in MPromise...and then, in Lark and Wren, pages 377-378, Lark wonders if a guard is related to a sheep! A quote: "and more to the inadvisibility of intercourse with sheep, for surely this man was surely the lamentable offspring of such an encounter." Misty also puts other metaphors, similes, and lines about sheep in the book! Foresight, I tell you! And then, oh..THEN we have page 366's "Sir Thessalay"! 3. I'm going off to take French 1 at Duke tomorrow, so...I'll be postponing, for three weeks:( I'll be back eventually, though...so don't think I'm gone for good! I'll have autographed copies for all of you. I'll even let you guys buy it at the wholesale price! *g* Wish me luck. I've got about 100 pages to go. (One broken, one headless, IIRC) because both Heralds are as good as dead... Any further arrows coming from either would be dismissed, or at least THOROUGHLY analyzed, because no more communication is expected... Besides, a Herald wouldn't think of such a thing, and a non-Herald looking around would probably think that there was something carved into the arrow to identify the person... Who would think that there was a telling pattern in the fletching? On another note, why is there not a mention of the arrow code in the latter books of the same period? Elspeth never carried a quiver of arrows, nor did skif or dirk... Or was it just not mentioned due to lack of necessity for it's use? (In otherwords, Misty threw it into AotQ as MAJOR forshadowing *gods grant you never have to use the black striped arrow... hint hint...* and then dismissed it in later books as rather irrevalent...) - Shadow-Lover ************************-=E-mail-WDJPEJ-+AT+-ix.netcom.com=-*********************** * - Puritainism: The haunting fear that somebody, somewhere might be happy...* * * * - Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else... * * * * - Dancing naked to the drums... This is long... Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19960720152526.00663758-+AT+-popd.ix.netcom.com> Bright the day, all... To all of you: When I said I was going to lurk for a while, I only meant that I was rather upset and wasn't going to post 'till I got over it... I didn't want to end up flying off the handle and flaming someone just because I was having a bad day... From the overwhelming responses I got from all of you, I've decided that not only do I have NO CHOICE but to stay, but if I ever tried to leave, I'd end up with a full half of you on my doorstep the next morning saying :Don't even think about it:... I've never felt so loved in my life... *gryn* So, as a result, I am back... and feeling rather cheerful for th lord of the dead... I guess it's just residue of Mishi's gift (curse?) of hyperactivity and overbubblyness... Guess there's no telling... To all who sent me email or posted responses: I thank you... I've been on this list for a year now, and some of you have become like family... It's a real comfort knowing how many of you care... Somehow, someway, we've got to organize a Mercedes-Lackey Mailing List Herald's Revel and get us all in one place at one time... It would be nice to put some faces with the names... Can't you see the full room group hug? *gryn* And where else can you go that no one looks at you funny for chatting with your companion who's right outside? For that matter, where esle can you go and sit among the Lord of the Dead, Goddess of Nomenclature, God of Humor, Goddess of Hyperactivity and Overbubblyness, God of all things nocturnal, Goddess of Forgiveness, Mage of Green Silences, and all the other immortals that grace the list? Only problem is, if we managed to all get in one place, we'd probably never want to leave! To Jake: Congrats on your good fortune.. May you prosper in all things and always... Hopefully one day I'll be listmaster of they Rynath mailing list where we can congregate and remenice about when you were just one of us, instead of dining with Misty and Larry on weekends... Put me down for an autographed first edition copy... *gryn* To Thessalay: I don't recall if your reply was private or public, but in any case, I appreciate your commentary, and being so inspired by you and your circle of friends My message: To Summersong: Be careful what you say and to whom you say it... You never know when something is going to strike a bad chord and cause some deranged postal worker type to overreact... *gryn* But if our patron Goddess of Forgiveness can forgive you, alas, so can I... and BTW: I DO SWALLOW AND I'M D*MN PROUD OF IT! *With a gryn to Lady Thesselay... All the rest of you can ignore that comment...* To Kintara: Not only do I know of Jolt Cola, I drink it whenever I can't get my morning coffee... It's not very popular since this health kick about caffein and your heart showed up, but since when have I listened to health kicks... Eat right, excersize, die anyway... Caffein is the only reason why I can be nice at work/school... Call it my anti-depressant! *gryn* To Lady 'Reesa: WHERE ARE YOU???? I MISS YOU!!! To all inquireing about Lady Jaguar: She is off in South Carolina (kidnapped by the MIW, no doubt) until school starts... I sent a letter off to her today, and hope to hear from her soon... As soon as I hear, I'll send word to all of you... To Mishi: My thoughts and blessing are with you... Come back to us safe and joyous... We need you here... To any I may have missed: *hugs* I'll remember you and get back to you in short order, but I think this post is long enough... Again, to you all: Thank again... It's good to know I've friends out there... My love and blessings to you all... Your deaths may commence now... *gryn* - Shadow-Lover And now back to our previously scheduled program... ************************-=E-mail-WDJPEJ-+AT+-ix.netcom.com=-*********************** * - Puritainism: The haunting fear that somebody, somewhere might be happy...* * * * - Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else... * * * * - Dancing naked to the drums...
