Remember in the last book of the LAst Herald Mage trilogy Vanyel at the end found out that there are several different areas a former herald can do. Tylendal chose to come back and turned into Stephen. Vanyel came back as his spirit so did Stephen and Yfandes. There must be other possibilities since at one points wasn't VAnyel talking about him seeing a picture image of some women sometimes when he was around Yfandes. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jul 1996 15:24:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Master of Karma To: Misty Lackey List Subject: Braid: LilacFairy/Females in the Theatre/Reincarnation Message-ID: On Mon, 22 Jul 1996, The Lilac Fairy wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Firesong's Mom/Recommended books >>>The Lilac Fairy returns to her woodland bower, and contemplates her sad tendency to fall in love with gay men who don't really exist- Vanyel, Firesong, and now the Mage of Green Silences.<<< Aaack! It was an attempt to cut down on some of the bawdiness and immorality of the acting world. Many "actresses" were also prostitutes and used acting as way of advertising. Banning females from the theatre was an attempt to prevent the theatres from turning into just another type of brothel. ObMisty: Have you noticed that there is never anything mentioned about the underbelly of life in Valdemar. I mean, we know it exists as sort of background for characters like Skiff and Stefen and...what was his name?...Neave(?), but we never hear about it beyond that. You would sort of think that the Heralds or the Guard would be a bit more concerned about this kind of thing. I mean, I always got the impression that that was what the Heralds were primarily supposed to be doing. In fact, Neave, who was originally from out-Kingdom, mentions the fact that what happened to him couldn't happen in Valdemar. Yet we never even hear of a Herald who deals with these kind of issues. All of the heralds seem to ride circuit from small village to small village, and Haven gets ignored. -----EOM On Mon, 22 Jul 1996, sbiggers wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Re: Braid: Reincarnation/Van Stuff/Karma/and a Parody! >>>I always thought that the Companions were former Heralds, that were reborn into a Companion. After having read SRising, here are some thoughts (I don't have exact references, since the book is at home, but I can look for them and put them in a follow-up post, if needed). First, there is someplace in the narration where it is implied that not all of the Companions are reincarnated *heralds*. I think that there is a suggestion that some of them may be reincarnated other types of people. Secondly, this came up during a convo that pretty much explicitly states that most Companions are reincarnated. Thirdly, in the narration of FireSong's little thingamy in the void, it is made clear that reincarnation is a fairly common circumstance in Velgarth. (BTW, this is where I appear in the book, as the God of Karma *grin*). The narration says something to the effect that souls travel through the void and are either reincarnated or passed on to an afterlife by the Powers that be. Now, if reincarnation in Velgarth works anything like reincarnation works in RL religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism, cross-species reincarnation is one of the most common types. Incidentally, how about this for an idea: Heralds are not "reincarnated" as Companions. That is just a convenient short-hand. We know that Gwenna, at least, is a "Guardian Spirit" (the first Winds book), and the implication is that the other Companions are too. So, how about this. Heralds are reincarnated as a higher life-form (Guardian Spirit) and then they have a choice of returning to become a Companion, or going on to Havens to do other work? When it started to wash out, it became a really kool dark-aquamarine color, it was fun. To whomever could not find a voice teacher: please e-mail me privately, if you would like suggestions for locating one. Very large thanks to whomever let me know that I had to request my goddesshood! To Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, I offer a tithe of ten pounds of Pacific Northwest Salmon (smoked or fresh), three pounds of Yakima Valley cherries, three pounds of Washington Apples (type of your choice), and an unlimited supply of Torrefazione or Starbucks coffee drinks of your choice (lattes, vanilla lattes, frappucini, cappucini), and humbly request the title of Goddess of Song and Musical Arts (or Goddess of Song and Music, if this infringes upon anyone else's territory). To Mishi: my sincerest condolences upon the loss of your friends. That must have been devastating. I'm sending you a virtual hug. ({{{{{{Mishi}}}}}}) I hope you have lots of people in your community who are supportive during this very sad time. Someone else put their finger on what was bothering me about the Bardic Voices trilogy - I had gotten very attached to Rune, and it depressed me to have her disappear in that way, basically just become a very peripheral figure. (I was also a little sad that she was a contralto, since I'm a soprano). I really like the musical focus in the trilogy, though. Can anyone else recommend any fantasy that involves music? I've read Tanya Huff's "Quarter" books, Gael Baudino's "Gossamer Axe", and Ardath Mayhar's "Soul-Singer of Tyrnos". Thanks a lot! As to the characters I would like to meet: Jennie Talldeer, Talia, Kero, David Spotted-Horse (post-medicine initiation - he was too much of a jerk before), Elspeth, Darkwind, Karal and An'desha. NOT Firestone! This has gone on long enough - but did anyone else watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, and hear Bob Kostas say about how "the American women were *actually* expected to win more gold medals than the men," and Dick Enberg made some sort of moronic remark like, "That's hard to swallow... I wonder how the men will feel about that?" excuse me? The last I heard, the Americans were all on the same team! (Apologies to Lady Mel for the off-topic rant). It = allows one to look for supernatural power. If you turn it inwards, = you find the mind-channels. If you turn it outwards, you find the = mage-channel. << Ok, just what was the textual evidence for this theory? (I think you gave it generally but I don't have the original post in front of me.) It may be reading too much into a side comment. It happens from time to time, especially when folks are desperate for a topic. Support your theory! I'll be eternally grateful. ******* Undine: >>BTW: Any guesses about the words to the Hedgehog song? Jake? Anyone?<< You can get them from the Pratchett Faq. Which is reachable(along with lots of other discworld zaniness) though the web page. In fact, I have it set as my home page on AOL's internet access (much better than theirs!). URL: http://Lspace.cp.tn.tudelft.nl Enjoy! ******* Wildfire: >>And now, some Misty-related food for thought: By now it is pretty much acknowledged that Heralds can be reincarnated as Companions. How about non- Heralds?<< I've wondered about this as well. There is very little textual evd. but I did find one situation that might prove it. Van arranged for Stef to be able to join him in Sorrows, but Stef had to earn his place. (_Magic's Price_ p 332 Daw Paperback 1990) So if you ignore the fact that Stef is Lendel's reincarnation, then perhaps a Herald can intervene or they can earn a choice. The fact that Heralds get a choice may be due to the fact that they sacrifice their lives for others. If that is the case then Healers, Bards, and priests may get a similar choice or get reincarnted; but I can't support this at this time. It is my opinion only. ******* Cennydd: >>BTW, I was listening to my Alanis CD a few nights ago and I got to thinking that the words to her song "Head over Feet" were very much about a modern sort of lifebond. Tell me what you think:<< You may have a point. Most revealing is the speaker's declaration that "you've already won me over in spite of me" The line about "I had no choice but to hear you" could indicate a soul-deep connection or merely persistence on the part of the other person. I could go on but I'm too lazy to do a full dissection. Besides Alanis can be almost as difficult in her own way as Gerard Manly Hopkins. She gets more mileage out of her words. ******* Kim: >>Not necessarily; I think other schools teach you how to pull from nodes, too; Hulda wasn't Tayledras trained, I'm sure. I don't think the Imperials were, either, or the old Herald-Mages. Although I agree that it *is* a combination of training, and White Winds is something different alltogether. And just one more thing-- if you'll never reach more than Master class, then you won't be able to use the nodes anyway, Blood Path Page or no.<< Hmmm. Magic is like any other school of thought. You learn it from the masters. Which means that what the masters don't know the students don't know. So it is possible for several philosophies of magic to exist. The basic rules may not change. For example, the Imperials have a much more advanced/practical use of magic. It is to them what technology is to us. So when the Mage Storms short-circuted their systems, they were blind, deaf, and dumb. (Think about when the lights go out during a thunderstorm. It is a helpless feeling and it would get damned inconvient if you had to deal with it more than a few hours). Philosophies do change, and I expect magic on Velgarth(or at least in Valdemar) is heading for a consolidation of schools. You've got eight major schools of thought coming together in the Mage Storms series: Tayledras/Imperial/Mind Magic/Shin'a'in Shamanism/White Winds/Keled'a'in(sp?)/Karsite. Of course you could even expand more on that if you wanted to include An'desha's insight into the past lives of Falconsbane. Usually it takes time to change a school of thought. Sometimes the right combination of people will bring about a revolution in a relatively short time. ( Remember how Elspeth and Darkwind kept discovering things that were thought impossible before? Elspeth was mostly ignorant of magic but her ignorance allowed her to see things in a fresh light and question why it had to be done this way or that way.) So, the Mage Storms will alter all the schools that have joined in the fight for survival, and may well spawn a whole new school of thought(magic). ******* Lady Wintersong: >>In M'sPrice, Vanyel admits that he has always loved them and thinks they are quite good after all. Lord Withen is now nothing but a little hidebound and Lady Treesa just a tweeny bit selfish. I mean, such a drastic change? Did Misty sudden;y get sentimental and try for one of those happy family endings?<< Before I begin, my apologies for using generalities. I do not mean to imply or state that all teenagers are sops. The teen years are a transitional time from child to adult(phyiscally if not mentally). That means that with hormones running rampant, teens are trying to discover who they are and what they want to be. This is not a slur! Now on to the reply. Van is just a whiny, put upon teenager. He feels that no one understands him, no one really loves him, and that he is insufferably different from anyone else. He blames it on his parents in part. He feels that he can never love them. But he does love them because he wants to be able to please them. The older I get the more I understand my parents. I too have hated them, thought they were silly or unreasonably demanding. But now I realize that they were just concerned with the best for me. The triumph in Magic's Promise is that Withen and Treesa have learned to accept Vanyel as the person he is and not as the person they want him to be. Growing up is traumatic for parent and offspring. My point is that the progression of Van's relationship with his parents from Pawn to Promise is a feasible one for any normal parent/child relationship where the child has extraordinary abilities or a differing personality type from the parents.
