Then Keren (who is responding to a summons from Rolan, and doesn't "just happen by") goes in after Talia, too. Then *Sherrill* goes in after Keren. It is important that it is Sherrill because she is the other herald around who knows the protocol for ice-rescues (since she is from Lake Evendim). It is also important, because it serves as foreshadowing that Sherrill and Keren are bonded. That is how Sherrill gets there in time and why she follows Keren. Teren, who is summoned both by Keren and by Rolan, has the blankets and bundles her up to Collegium where Jeri and Gaytha are waiting. Ylsa (who is just arriving at the Collegium when all this is happening, and only serves as a witness) shows up, from Talia's perspective, after the rescue is done and over with (in the bathing room, to perform a healing diagnostic on Talia). The God and Goddess titles are not self-appointed. You have to petition Lady Thessa for that. The other titles, such as "Mage of Green Silences" or something, are self-created. -----EOM On Tue, 23 Jul 1996, Glithoniel wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Textevd./hedgehog/reincarnation/mdrn lfebnd/magic/Vanyel >>>Ok, just what was the textual evidence for this theory? Magic is like any other school of thought. You learn it from the masters. Which means that what the masters don't know the students don't know.<<< This isn't true about any living theory. The whole point of any theoretical school is that each new generation of scholars using it will add onto it and build from it. Usually, the way it works is that the student ends up know "more" than the master. Any school of thought where the student never surpasses the master is doomed and dying. Actually, this is the big difference between undergraduate and graduate school. In undergraduate, students are expected to learn the facts and theories of their field, but are not necessarily expected to outstrip their teachers. In graduate school, students are expected to go out and create the new generation of the theory and end up knowing more about their field than their teachers. One definition of the goal of a doctoral dissertation is "to make you the world's expert on at least one thing." The idea is that in order to get your doctorate, you must prove that you know more about some topic in your field than anyone else in the world. That is really what your committee's main task is, verify if this is true. If they find someone else who has written substantially the same thing as you, you have to find another topic, or prove that your treatment is more complete and better than the previous one. >>>Usually it takes time to change a school of thought.<<< Depends on the discipline and how open it is. My shool of Linguistic theory, for instance, has gone through about 4 major revolutions in the last 30 years, possibly more. Actually, I think that the most telling factor in changing the magical schools of thought in Velgarth would be the involvement of the artificers, particularly the logicians and mathematicians. Remember, that up until they got involved, there wasn't exactly a "theory" of magic. The schools of magic were pretty much based on intuition and artistry. The difference between the meaning of "theory" to an artist and the meaning to a scientist is amazing and profound. Art Theory and Music Theory, for example, are more "technique" than anything else. Scientific Theory, on the other hand is supposed to be a unified and principled explanation of why things work the way they do and is supposed to satisfy a number of characteristics such as 1) have predictive power, 2) be heuristically valuable, 3) be testable, 4) be explanatory, etc. If Misty is aware of this difference, it should be interesting to see where magic goes now that a "scientific" group is actively involved in the study of magic. >>>"I never saw a purple moor/nor yet have seen the sea/but I know how the heather looks/and what a billow be"<<< Hmmm. Ok, well, it has to be said: "I never saw a purple cow / nor ever hope to see one / but I can tell you here and now / I'd rather see than be one." -----EOM May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. I have to admit that the only opera that I like, in its entirety, is Carmen, but I have always loved selected pieces from various operatic works. I can't say that I have been particularly impressed with the idea of Les Mis or Phantom, but I like one or two songs from both. I also love other selected pieces, though my fave periods seem to Classical, Romantic, and Renaissance (not, strictly speaking part of what most people consider to be classical). -----EOM On Tue, 23 Jul 1996, Lady Thessa wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Re: Music >>> >>I hope I can be some kind of a singer. I sing anywhere I can, as long as there aren't any non-family members around. I have had a great deal of training (I had been singing in choirs and the like from the time I was 4 'til I was a senior in HS). On the other hand, the reason I didn't continue on to major in vocal performance in college was that my voice is pretty "blah" now (after the change). Of course, Lady Thessa, I have you beat. I had the unique experience of having a voice change that was perfectly smooth and without "cracking" and at one point I could go from a C above High C to below the staff in Bass Clef. A little more than 5 octaves. Gradually, I lost the extreme upper part of my range as my voice settled and now I just have a wide baritone/tenor range. I can go as deep as I used to, or as high. Not that anyone except my family every asks to hear me sing any more, since the other thing I lost when my voice settled was resonance. My singing voice has a very empty, "soft" quality to it that no amount of training could remedy. For those of you who have read McAffrey's Killashandra stories, I really, really identified with her character at the beginning of the first book. -----EOM On Tue, 23 Jul 1996, SummerSong wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Personality Test >>>I got XNTJ, and the closest description was ENTJ -- a field marshal.<<< Hmmm.
