What a week. Sigh. Kimbada, IMNSHO stands for In My Not So Humble Opinion. Didn't someone compile a list of abbreviations? Were they added to the FAQ? Let's all pray to our respective deities that Jake's book gets treated well. SOP for publishers is that once the author sells his/her beloved manuscript it becomes product. Which means that authors rarely have input about cover art or jacket blurbs or marketing plans. Did you know that pubs make a lot of decisions based on whether they think an author's work is back, mid or frontlist material--often without actually reading any of the work? Sigh. And did you know that pubs often spend "advertising" money on parties for themselves in NY instead of sending promo materials to bookstores. Grrr! Please excuse the foam starting to drip off my chin, but publishers' misuse of marketing $$$ is a pet peeve (of which I have many. I keep them in a cage in the store's backroom). Claris, if you want a Japanese/historical mystery try _Shin-Ju_ by Laura Joh Rowland. I read it in hardcover (it's in pb now) and Loved it! Lilac Fairy, I must agree with your taste in men. Sigh. CothPW lives. Count me among the rabid Pterry fans! I'm rereading all of his literary jewels (at least the ones that his US pub deigns to release even though it's been available in the UK for years. Grr. Ooh look- another peeve. I must admit that upon my first reading of CoM, I wasn't enchanted. It took _Reaperman_ and _Witches Abroad_ to open my eyes to the true delights/lunacy of Pterry. I'm afraid my brain is too mushy to come up with a truly scintillating ObMisty. OOC, does she mention schools of magic (as opposed to religion based use) other than White Winds? Don't believe everything you read in the paper :-). All that cookies do is store information across accesses - it doesn't have to be anything sneaky, it's probably just things like your preferences, whether you're already registered (so you don't have to log in each time for online shops and the like) and so on. Most of the time, the idea is to make life easier for the user; you can probably come up with methods to abuse the idea, but that isn't what it's intended for :-). If anyone's actually worried about companies tracking who/what/how often, you'd better stop using your web browsers right now! Why? because every time you look at a page, your browser has to ask that site to send the data to you - and the programs that do that *already* have the option of recording where the request came from[*]. They don't need cookies to do that. (and anyway, anything that uses cookies could probably do exactly the same thing at their end if they really wanted to). [*] Yes, I know proxy servers complicate this somewhat. It's a fact of life - any communications over the net can be recorded if either end (or anywhere in between) wants to. Conspiracy theorists can reflect on the fact that it would be fairly simple (for example) for government agencies to run keyword search programs on international email - just slap monitoring equipment on the relatively few international links... usenet news is even easier :-). I doubt if homing coconuts are on the search list yet though :-). -- _|_ / | Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) \_|_ jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \__/ Hemel Hempstead, UK jerry-+AT+-shell.portal.com (alternate) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 96 10:16:36 -0600 From: Jedi Master To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: D. In some things I've read (don't ask for exact names cause I can't remember :) those with foresight can only see things that are not directly conected to themselves. Like Alberich could sense that something bad would be happening to Selenay when she went riding that day, but might not have been able to see anything if it had been an attack on himself (how did he get warning about his loss of safty in Karse (sp?)- was it just when he got attacked, or did he know somehow before his companion showed up that today was the day that his mind powers would get him in trouble?). Therefore, Selenay could vaguely sense that Elspeth marrying Ancar would be bad, but couldn't sense the same thing when it had related to herself earlier. Does this make sense? (laughs) Not going to comment on the other part of the sentence. David Eddings was the good author of six books: _The Belgariad_ and _Belgarath the Sorcerer._ Everything else is a poor copy of the first. Perhaps _Polgara the Sorceress_ will be (agh) the same as _Belgarath the Sorcerer_ was! *grin* If anything, Eddings did well with _The Losers_--it wasn't the same story again! STORMCLOUD responded: >I thought it was all right. It was _highly_ metaphorical, angel vs. >devil stuff. That's not particularly my favorite type of book, but I >thought it was okay. Yes, but it really wasn't too much classical angel vs. devil stuff. There was this whole inner meaning to the book. Only in the paperback do they give Raphael the wings and stuff; the hardcover art has Patch on it, I believe. Of course, _The Losers_ is out of the genre I usually read. (Urban! Ick ick!) But I think it was a good book... Uhhh... thats not how cookies work. Cookies are used for security on websites, to create an encoded environment in order to "safely" transfer important data.. such as credit card numbers or social security numbers. The numerical sequence is the encryption code assigned to your particular browser in the event that you will be needing to transmit secure information. They *can* be used to track what people are doing, but that is not what they were designed for, and not their primary function. Heck, they could much easier and much faster track that kind of thing just by looking at their log files. Once again media promotes widespread mis-information...
