We're almost discouraged to take a language, and often if you do you have to have your whole schedule changed so class starts at 7:30 in the morning. Also, our music is all suffering from major money cuts. At some of the gradeschools even the basic music class is being taken out. This is criminal to me, 'cause I think music enriches lives..and being a musician, I couldn't bear having all my opportunities taken away from me. It does say that "Thou shalt not suffer a witch > >to live.". Actually, that's the KJV, which is *NOT* a good translation. The original wording was *poisoner*--not witch. > Actually, Lillith stems from a jewish form of the bible in which she is > Adam's first wife and created as he, from the earth. She ends up turning bad > and runs of to cavort with demons if I remember aright. Lilith is a non-biblical person. She *is* from the Jewish mythos, to the best of my knowledge, and does figure in as Adam's first wife, but she does not appear in the Torah, which is the same as the first five books of the Christian bible. I will check my whatchamacallit--that thing with all the words in the Bible listed with chapter and verse--tonight and get back to you on chapter and verse with the "thou shalt not..." stuff. It *is* in there... but, as I said, it's the KJV (that's King Jimmy Version), which was "translated" to suit King James, *NOT* for accuracy. Personally, my belief is that the bible, like all other major religious works (the Book of Mormon, the Koran...) is a nice piece of fiction... The Judeo-Christian creation myth is very similar to the creation mythos propounded in other religions; the "Books of Moses" (Genesis/Exodus/ Leviticus/Numbers/Deutoronomy) were written by at least five different hands (stylistically speaking)... And there are two creation myths in Genesis--the "in the beginning God..." stuff and the Adam and Eve story. And with regards to the "itbG" stuff, who am I to say how long one of God's days is? It could be millions of years, for all I know. Personally, to quote Alice Walker, "God ain't a he or a she, it an it..." God (in my book, at least) is bigger than all the human religions combined. It is everywhere, and in everyone and everything. As to my credintials, I'm as pagan as they come. I choose to call upon my gods in my own way, not in a manner dictaed by others. I have studied the bible in depth over the first 20 years of my life, and have *never* believed that God created the world in seven 24-hour periods. (Don't *get* me started on that one!) As far as translations go, the New International Version is quite excellent. The KJV is a beautiful piece of literature, but it is not a good translation. I'm not going to continue to waste bandwith on this, but if anyone wants to discuss it, feel free to E-mail me directly. - Sal %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% % Somebody should have labeled the future 'Some Assembly Required.' % % - Michael Garibaldi % %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 17:28:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Morgana To: mailinglist Lackey Subject: Braid, day 16th! Take a look at the back of _Storm Warning_. It's got a woman's head, wearing a beaded choker and really large gold earings, with sparkles instead of eyes. On either side of Her, ther are birds with sparkle eyes too (though the birds' have pupils. Bad Jody Lee! Bad!).<< Do I have a defective copy or something? I do *not* see this!!!! All I see on the back of my _Storm Warning_ cover is some designs that are brown, green, pink, and some other colors with the design of a sun at the top. I do *not* see what you and Kimber described. Are there copies with different cover art? Oh, by the way, I just bought _Storm Rising_, and I thought it was TEEEERIFIC!!!! I read it in about two hours. I especially LOVE the part where Firesong goes through the type of catharsis as Andesha(sorry have no idea where the apostrophe goes) does in _Storm Warning_. Kind of shows Firesong he's human......oh well, enough with the endless praise...sorry, no real ObMisty, except for my absolute LOVE for _Storm Rising_ Starsong (Jeff Bouthiette) (hopefully soon-to-be God of Operatic Drama) bouthiet-+AT+-fas.harvard.edu "Gli enigmi sono tre, un e la vita!" -- The riddles are three, life one! -- Calaf in Puccini's _Turandot_ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jul 1996 22:07:38 -0700 From: poisoniv-+AT+-sprynet.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: languages/crying/greetings newbies!! Glith bows shortly while rummaging around in her basket. She pulls out a small silver clock, the hands of which run backwards.** "This should help you keep time" she says hurriedly, "Sorry, I don't have time to show you exactly how it works, but I'm late for an appointment." **She hurries leaving a very surprised listmate behind her. ******* Mat: >>Presumably, if Selenay died, Kyril or Elcarth could teach Elspeth the Code. There's no reason for her to have known it. And only Kyril and Elcarth have every pattern memorized. The two of them, Selenay, the Sensechal, and Talia after her internship, are the only ones who can decrypt the hidden records of the patterns. Guess who just reread Arrows? :)<< I don't know how many of you come from small towns or went(are going/will go?) to small colleges; but that could explain the discrepancy. How? Well, the Collegium is a very tight community. It is also small. Most things, except for the most top secret eventually get passed around(trust me, gossip is one of the few vices most people love to participate in) Elspeth has been hobnobbing with Heralds since she overcame her bratliness. She is also intelligent and good at picking up on things. The broken arrow and the headless arrow are the sort of things that might circulate through rumors. She'd have no way of knowing it was Talia's particular code; but since Rolan brought the arrows without Talia it was pretty evident that something very bad had happened. ******* Cennydd: >>A heartstone is a set-spell that is keyed to a particularly node and regulates the energy flow to some extant, making it easier to access the node power. In other words, the heartstones are *not* nodes. They are spells that allow access to nodes.<< David Tiffany gave a pertinent reference on the nature of heartstones out of the Mage Winds series. Here's another scattered piece of evidence. In Magic's Promise (p 283 of the Daw pb edition), Vanyel has the following thoughts when they discover the heartstone in Tashir's home: "This was a _Tayledras_ heart-stone. The Vale of k'Treva had such a stone, a place where the physical, material valley itsef merged and melded with the energy-node and intersection of power-flows 'below' it. Such a stone was the physical manifestation of the energies fueling the _Tayledras_ magics. And this physical manifestation was peculiarly vulnerable to tampering." >>I don't think that there is any evidence that the flow of the ley-lines is tied to/affected by the physical world. I don't see why an earthquake would affect the flow of a ley-line. I get the feeling that ley-lines move slightly over time in the natural course of events and that nodes are formed by the crossing of lines. In a sense, I think that a good analogy would be ocean currents.<< They are described in the books as being similar to rivers. The magic, much like water collects and flows down the easiest line of resistance. The nodes are pools where larger ley lines meet. I haven't found the text evd. on this yet but I'm searching. I do know that the nodes can affect the physical world(the node in Tashir's palace was left in place to prevent a disatrous earthquake). ******* David Tiffany: >>btw, if you like darker fantasy, have you tried CS Friedman's "Cold Fire" trilogy? (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, and the 3rd one I havn't been able to afford yet and can't recall the name of) Very good , if uncomfortable, books. I'll recommend them heartily.<< The third one is Crown of Shadows. I haven't read it and I've only started When True Night Falls but I haven't been in the mood to finish it. You definitly have to be in a dark and/or receptive mood to read the Cold Fire books. A rainy or stormy day would be perfect. Its a good thing Misty's books aren't that dark. Valdemar would loose all of its appeal. ****** Becky: >>Or maybe, the Shin'a'in "place of eternal punishment" is a cold part of the Havens. It is the Haven*S* plural, so maybe there's more than one little Haven section. Could be a good one, and a bad one for every religion that exists, who knows? Maybe everyone gets their own little Haven. Lots of possibilities,<< I dunno about that theory. To me the word "Havens" has a certain connotations. It certainly doesn't stir up visions of punishment. How could punishment be described as a Haven? Mostly truly bad people don't think about their eternal punishment. They are the types who think themselves invincible. Besides, Velgarth doesn't seem to have a religion that requires salvation by blood sacrifice or else you are consigned to some nether plane with its denizens(Did you know that TSR won't let its writers use demons? A writer at a conference I went to said that they had to call them denizens of the lower planes--sounds like demons to me. Powers save us from TSR BSO's!!! But I digress). Most of the characters we see are either good or so evil that they are totally self-centered.
