Welcome back Heather! *waves* I came back from vacation (One week of missed messages at my Dad's house) and I had 1,300 messages. Been a little wordy lately haven't we? *grin* I deleted most of them, and I haven't been following the mage-war at all, so I'm completely out of it. I guess I'm just getting ready to go back to school... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: Curse of the Pink Wand Lilac Fairy, can I come to your party? *pout* I have this sad tendency to fall in love (or at least lust!) with fictional gay men, and I bake a mean batch of chocolate chip cookies, so see, I'd be an asset! I love the Curse of the Blue Cauldron! *LOL* And Jakey, in answer to your question, "What's it called when a straight man falls for a lesbian?" my mother says, and I quote, "Hopelessly masochistic." See, you knew she was good for something besides telling you how funny you are! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: Whites I think the uniforms are white because they were going for the good-guy image, and what screams "I am good!" more than brilliant white uniforms. I seem to remember something from the Now-Famous Orientation class about Valdemar giving the new Heralds uniforms that matched their Companions, but then, I could be wrong. Yes, it happens to the best of us. Even when you're Queen of Everything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pheonix Has anyone heard anything at all about this book? I've heard from a couple people that it's a sequel to _The Fire Rose_, which I find kind of hard to beleive. I've also been told that it's completely new, and set in a fictional world. The one I'd like to beleive most is that it's a new Bedlam Bard book, but I'm not holding any of my appendages to my nether regions. What's your guess? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shadow-lover I'm glad you didn't go on lurk-mode, 'cause you know, I'd miss you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I guess that's about it. Esmerelda: >>>Now ML either has very nasty and totally ruthless baddies, or rather nice goodies. Where's her totally ruthless goodie? <<< How about Tarma? Tarma and Kethry both are ruthless. I wouldn't want to be at cross purposes with either. I think Lackey fails to make the ruthlessness apparent. Ruthlessness is kinda hard to make compatible with the idealism of the Heralds. There is one scene which I know is there somewhere but can't remember where or when. Dirk calmly slits somebody's throat. Or is it a story Kris tells of Dirk. Sorry, this is so vague. Is my imagination running rampant again or does anyone else remember this? ******* Lionceau: >>When Glithoniel wrote : "Magic is like any other school of thought. You learn it from the masters. Which means that what the masters don't know the students don't know." She was touching upon the fact that we are all prisoners of our paradigms, the formation of which is largely influenced by (what passes for) education. Students rarely go so far as to undermine the foundations of their discipline, nor do they often go beyond the framework of what they have been told is valid.<< Thank you! Thank you! That is exactly what I meant. I'm glad somebody could phrase it better than I could. ******* Michele: >>Holly Lisle - her best book so far IMHO is 'Minerva Wakes'<< I don't think I ever laughed so hard as when Darren finds the dragon in his room eating wheaties and drinking beer. ROFL. As to her other series, I have books one and three and refuse to start them until I get book two. ******* Lady Sophia: >>I'll have to admit, I never saw the Tay'ledras as elves! But some of the things fit: reverence for the land, magic-using, reclusive.... I guess I never saw the elves as being so... hedonistic.<< I always thought of the Tayledras as more like the Cherokee and the other Iroqoise(sp?) tribes. There is I suppose a touch of the elvish there but again I never really considered it. The magic angle is inconclusive as an argument for T. as elves since many cultures believe(d) in magic. ******* Blades: >>Actually I feel the need to pipe up here too, as a pagan I am often quoted this from many close-minded short-sighted religion-blinded non-constitution-believing pig-headed no-thinking moron, yet I've yet to see book, chapter and verse on it.<< The way I've always heard it is "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." In the current translation of the King James Version I'm using the following verse can be found in Leviticus 19:31 "Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I AM the Lord your God." The edict against witches would have been more properly translated as a edict against Necromancers. Translations are often imperfect and swayed by the prejudices of its time. Having contact with spirits(dead or otherwise) was forbidden probably because of the inherent dangers of demonic possession. Maybe I'm naive, but there were reasons for all the old testament laws. My beef with the Bible beaters is that they seem to forget that Christ made and sealed a new covenant with his death(who said God doesn't accept human sacrifice? What was the death of Jesus then?). Don't read me wrong here. I'm not trying to convert you. That isn't my place or my right. >>you don't see me jamming my beliefs down your throat as some christians try too do to pagans, remember the Golden Rule folks, Do unto other as you would have them do unto you. This is a good rule for life wether you be christian or no.<< Actually, most Christians feel they have no choice about trying to convert others. It is a commandment Christ gave his followers before the ascension. But as is often the case with many good ideas, later generations distorted enormously. The Bible plainly states that if a place doesn't want to hear the word of Christ, you should depart that place. What is often forgotten as well, is the old actions speak louder than words adage. If your life doesn't reflect your beliefs then your words are meaningless. >>Satanists are part of the christian religion by pure logic alone. they worship "Satan" also known by various othe names and most commonly refered to as the "Devil" This is the opposite pole of "God" in the christian religion, so therefore, using logic.<< Logic be damned! That doesn't sound so much like logic as it does a chance to strike back at Christians. Satanists are haters--their religion is built on selfishness and hate. They fit right in with the Neo-Nazis, the skinheads, and the Klu Klux Klan! Hate is never acceptable. Saying that Satanism is a form of Christianity, is like saying that monkeys are humans and not just two species with a common ancestry. Don't let a few bull-headed(pigs are quite intelligent, BTW), ignorant people make you slight the more accepting Christians in the world. I don't bad mouth your religion. I would appreciate it if you would show me the same courtesy!!!(and I actually correct people when they say Witches or Wiccans are Satanists. The two religions are just as adverse--from all that I have read and heard--as Christianity and Satanism!). Even if your statement was made in jest; it was in very poor taste. I'm so angry and upset right now, I could spit! ******* Summersong: >>Points to ponder: If a person with multiple personalities threatened to commit suicide, would that be considered as a "hostage situation"?<< LOL! That really lightened my mood. Thank you! Laughter truly is the best medicine! ******* Kimi-dear: >>Hey! If I get one squirrel sentence, what do the blurb-writers get? _They_ don't _have_ a sense of humour. *laugh* They don't even read past the first ten pages before giving you a summary!<< You know I actually have found a blurb that was pretty much accurate. It would have required reading more than the first ten pages as well. Nope, its not a Misty book. It's Holly Lisle's book _Minerva Wakes_ (Baen paperback). Even the mini-blurb on the front is eyecatching! Maybe there is yet hope! >>Hey.... Gods are supposed to be immortal anyway.... doesn't that leave your office pretty well, useless? *mischievous gryn*<< Well, actually not. According to Fraser (The Golden Bough) : "Man has created gods in his own likeness and being himself mortal he has naturally supposed his creatures to be in the same sad predicament." He then goes on at length to list examples. In regards to your parents problem you said: >>I also wish that the idea had never occured to my grandparents.<< Ah, but then you really wouldn't have been born. There wouldn't be anyone in this world just like you and frankly I think that would leave the rest of us greatly diminished. My parents argued a great deal. It made childhood very uncomfortable so I retreated into the woods, into the books, and into my own fantasy worlds. If the only good thing that comes of your folks marriage is you, well then maybe it was worth it. Endure, ke'chara, and in the end you'll be a stronger person for it. If you want a sympathetic ear, I'm available though occassionally tardy. Don't ever wish yourself into oblivion(not just dead but never having been). ******* Mandy: >> I've never heard of a language actually being _required_ in a junior high or high school.<< To earn a high school diploma in South Carolina, you have to have at least one year offoreign language. At least, that was the requirement 11 or so years ago. It may be twoyears now. ******* Evening shadows climb the screen. The stars begin their glistening. (Yes, I realize that concept was qualified when it was referred to?) Valdemar has enough major cultural differences from European Earth customs, that I don't think we should necessarily *assume* that those are the proper connotations (although given that Misty and her readers all live in a Eurocentric culture, that may be the assumption). In China, the color of joy and purity is red, and red is worn to weddings. White, on the other hand, is for funerals. I'd go with some slight connotation of purity, and also I think noticeabililty was supposed to be an asset worth the risk in this case. I'm trying to break into the mage war list, but can't think of a good character...all I've come up with is a priest of Vkandis would be interesting. Any suggestions? I had HS in two different states.. California and Delaware. In Cali, with all of the people coming up into the state from Mexico, I wouldnt be surprised if Spanish turns into a mandatory language pretty soon. In both my Jr High and HS years, I (and all the rest of the students) were strongly pressured to take Spanish as a second language. In fact, if I remember correctly, of the 6 language courses that were offered in HS, 4 of them were Spanish, one was French and one was German. When I was in Delaware for my last year of HS, (Brandywine HS in Wilmington, do you know it, Cennydd?) I found that entirely the opposite was true. Where there wasnt a Languages program to speak of, the languages they did offer were German and Russian, and I heard rumors that the Russian teacher, who also spoke Japanese, was going to be offering a Japanese course. Personally, I took German for 4 years, and have picked up bits and pieces of Russian from family members and SigO's who spoke it. [I seem to have a talent for finding people who speak Russian, its amusing]. And now for something completely different... I cried when Moreta died on Pern (although whether it was more for her or her dragon's reaction, I'm not sure), and I cried when 'Lendel died, and again when Van died. Those are just a few of the most memorable. I also cried my eyes out (at age 12) when E.T. died in the movie. So you can tell your significant other you're not weird, or at least that there are a lot of people out here who are just as weird as you... Lady Thessaly: I humbly request the title of Goddess of Starlight and Huge Thunderstorms, two things I love to watch. I love going for long walks on warm starlit nights, with the man of my dreams by my side (or not, since he's usually in bed by 10pm). And I love the wind and the power of a good thunderstorm, and the wonderful, clean, wet smell of the rain. And if you can have the thunderstorm at night, when it can really be appreciated, so much the better. As a tithe, I offer the bottomless tub of icecream (each scoop is the flavour most enjoyed by the scooper), to go with the many pies being offered as tithes by the other listmembers, as well as the endless freezer in which to store said pies and icecream until they can be shared with said listmembers. Many thanks for considering my plea... And then someone mentioned languages: Well, here in Ontario, Canada, you are _required_ to take at least one year of highschool French. I started highschool before this requirement came to be, so of course I took _five_ years of highschool French (which I loved), a summer of French Immersion (which I loved even more), and one year of university French (which I hated with a passion). I learned during my summer in Quebec that I can read Italian (or at least I could read enough of my roommate's letters to her family to get the main gist of what she was saying), but I don't stand a chance of understanding spoken Italian without lots of practice and instruction in pronunciation. My one year of highschool Latin was a blast. I also took a university course which was the equivalent of four years of highschool German, and had a great time. It was easily the easiest course I took in university, and really made me wonder (again) what on earth I was doing majoring in science. Anyway, I'm supposed to be somewhere else right at this precise moment (needless to say, I'm late), so...
