Every region uses their own slang. Personally, I've never heard "topped" used in either manner. with so many groups from so many ethnicities, you have a huge variance. For example, here, in West Virginia, we had many Irish/Scottish settlers. But in say, Loiusiana, there were all the French and Spanish, so hugely different colloquialisms. _____________________________________________________________ (time for a new sig I'd say...) -Vrondi,"Mistress of the Air, One With the Trees" a.k.a. Well Doodit and Natoli 'courted', altho' I presume they've also reached and passed the initial bed stage, and what Elspeth and Thingy had was a sort of courtship before they bedded - okay they didn't go out to the movies, or hit the clubs, but they spent a period getting acquainted. Eerm, Skif and Nyara definitely bedded first, Keo and Whatsit bedded fairly early - yep, there ain't a lot of dating going on, least not among the busy and influential.<< Personally IMHO, I don't think Doodit (Karal) and Natoli have reached that stage yet. I don't see enough evidence (course I could be wrong, since I don't have the books on hand.. Really gotta get some money together soon.) Also, I think Van and Stefan kinda "dated"...they just didn't jump into bed (despite what Stef wanted to do) but rather got to know each other beforehand. i.e. nights spent playing hinds and hounds, talking, etc., etc., etc. And, umm, maybe Skandranon and Zhaneel...she took Amberdrake's advice and stayed a bit aloof so Skan would have to court her. Form 3-7 Three years of university for a degree 1 more for a honours degree or 2 more for a masters then 3 or more for a Phd. Our universitys have no required courses except within the degree (in other words I have a computer science degree, and all my papers are either comp sci, or math) Lots of our high schools are single sex, and most have a uniform. We don't have nearly the same range of subjects the Americans study, we tend to concentrate on the basics. We have nation wide exams in the last 3 years of high school, which leads to some people dropping out after 5 form (around 15-16). Basically this means that only people who want to go on to university do that last year, or at least it was like this at my school. Anyway, I know this is off topic, but its interesting knowing about how different people were brought up. It is quite important to remember that some of us are not in the US. Espically when it comes to movies! We won't get Independence Day for months yet, and I don't want to accidently find out how it ends! And I would be fascinated to see how other countries school systems work. Sarah Sarah Stock Paradigm Technology Ltd sarah-+AT+-paradigm.co.nz The time for action is past! I had to get you for that one. ******************************************* undine wrote Lilac Fairy, I can't wait to try out the cobweb hammock - it sounds divine. And may we use your scrying pool to observe Cennydd's Ecdysiastic Tendencies? (I'm feeling a bit faint myself ) Cennydd, do you use fans, feather boas, or tassles? Of course, I'm asking strictly for educational purposes *salacious grin* And topping too! All I have to say is YUMMY!!! Move over Undine, make room for me!! That's all for now. Now *that's* an interesting element to their relationship! By way of explanation, my she'enedra is very into the S&M scene, and in that world, "topping" someone means to be their dominant in a sexual encounter. Now, a little sexual tension would make the Jervis-Vanyel dynamic really, really interesting, but I don't think it was intentinal. Giggle. Giggle giggle. But it would explain a lot. Giggle giggle giggle. Oh, and someone asked about the wedding. Here's the story. Somewhere around finals a few months ago, Cennydd and I decided to get married, because I wanted to wear a really neat dress and have really pretty bridesmaids. The whole list got in on the act, and we were deep in preparations for a blow-out, Mistylist wedding, until I left the list. Now you know. I've been feeling melancholic... down in the dumps. Saturday night was my church's annual Obon festival. It's a night where you put on your kimono & dance traditional Japanese dances & remember all those who have passed away, especially those that have died in since last year's festival. Last year, I danced for my mom; this year it was to remember two uncles & several friends of the family. :[ * * * * * Stormwind, I'm sorry about the loss of your pet . * * * * * Jake - GANBARE! The problem was/is that they didn't want to hear what I had to say majority of the time. I was usually "wrong" or "poor mislead child..." I finally got to the point that I either don't answer the door or before they start talking I say "no thanks" & close the door. Not only has Iftel been hinted about in the Storms books, but also in BTS... the bit about keeping Ancar's forces (especially the mages) between Valdemar's & Iftel's borders, because neither one would let the mages through... or something like that. So Iftel has been like the "unknown country" & the few traders that do cross over, don't say anything. * * * * * re: languages - My high school offered German, Spanish, French, Italian & Latin. College offered those same languages & Japanese, Chinese, Russian & American Sign Language. I took classes in everything except German, Latin & Chinese, but I've forgotten most of it. ("use it or lose it" & boy, have I lost it!) IIRC, two years of high school foreign language course(or the equivalent) was required to get into University of California & most other 4 year colleges. [yes Cennydd, your sig in french made me crazy. I could translate most of it, but I never learned anything more advances than the simple tenses. I finally broke down & had my office mate translate it for me. (She's originally from France)] * * * * * re: arranged marriages... Both my grandmothers were picture brides. I don't think I'd have the guts to do what they did. My maternal grandmother came over in 1914, passed through immigration, & that same day, got married to a man almost twenty years older than she, & must have gotten pregnant that very same night, because my uncle was born 9 months later. * * * * * debbie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jul 1996 22:53:51 -0400 From: Raingcats-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Another braid.../ Elspeth visiting more spirits?
