To give you an idea of what it is like, my sister once had a Rhema Bible College student offer to "rebuke" the demons in a malfunctioning vacuum cleaner at the shop she was working at. Rhema students are *required* to go out and witness to the community and they usually choose to do so to shop clerks in the area, since they (the clerks) can't really throw them out (it is considered bad for business to throw out potential customers). Many of you speak non-English languages, and many of you are native or proficient in these languages, so here's my request. I'm compiling a list of "slang" to add color to my role-playing game, which takes place in A. D. 2074, where the (former) USA is considerably more cosmopolitan. It is both technology and magick-heavy, and I have a lot of hacker terms on the list, plus a little Japanese and Chinese, but I would *REALLY* appreciate any nifty street-valid phrases, words, or lingo from any language. Especially appropriate would be "pidgin", "Japlish", Japanese, Mandarin or Cantonese Chinese, Gaelic, and "the Queen's English", but anything would be lovely. If I ever publish this on the Web or any other format, I'll give you credit. So, if you love words like I do, send me some at my own address. Just for the record, I may not live in Tulsa now, but I lived there for 14 years, and I still visit 3 or 4 times a year (usually for a month in the winter and then for long weekends and spring break). I maintain close contact with my friends there and am planning on returning at some point. So, that being said, I am a Tulsan, I know lots about it, and I dare because I thought that this was a list where it was safe to express my opinions and my experiences. If you don't like them, that is too bad, but that doesn't change them or the real-life facts that led to my forming them (my opinions, I mean). I love Tulsa dearly, and I am hoping that I will someday be able to move back there to live (if only TU would start a dept of linguistics, life would be perfect). However that doesn't keep me from seeing the bad points as well as the good. Rhema is not the only B-A Xian group in Tulsa that goes beyond courtesy and into the realms of harassment. I am sure that the city is full of very nice good-hearted Xians, too, but that doesn't mean that the annoying ones aren't there. It seems to be generating more heat than light. There _is_ no One, True Way, and Think Before You Post. That aside: Oh, it's off-topic, but what the hell. :) The UK school system works more or less thus: Ignoring any nursery school/kindergarten/etc, because the provision varies from place to place: Start school the term you turn 5. Primary school: 4/5 - 8 (also sometimes 'first school') Middle school: 8 - 12 High school: 12 - 16/18 Schooling is only compulsory until 16, many people stay on to 17 or 18 to take more courses, which are of course necessary if you want to go on to higher education. It is also possible to do the post-16 courses at a separate college rather than by staying at the same school, and indeed in some areas you _have_ to go to a different place because the schools no longer offer post-16 courses. A school student is usually referred to as being in Year X, 1 <= X <= ?. (That's a new development since I left school, so I don't know how they map onto ages.) Note that, in the UK, "school" _only_ means this level of education. Anything higher is 'university' or 'college'. University courses are typically three or four years. (Three is more common.) First years are 'freshers', at least for the first term or so; other years are 'second year', 'third year', 'fourth year' -- your average UK student might know what 'sophomore' _meant_ in the US system, but it's not used here. A university student who has not yet been awarded a degree is an 'undergraduate' ('undergrad'). Beyond that, things get a bit more complicated. :) Masters' degrees: courses of one or two years. (Typically one year for an M.Sc., two years for an M.A., but see below.) Doctoral degrees: 'as long as it takes'. When I took mine, the standard grant available was three years after one finished one's undergraduate work, so you could do an M.Sc. and then try to finish your Ph.D. in two years, or go straight to the Ph.D. and try to finish in three years. These days I believe the standard grant is for four years total, but basically they expect you to have done some kind of Master's degree first. Doing either of the above would make you a 'postgraduate' while you were doing it. It is therefore possible, and not particularly unusual, to have one's PhD at the age of 24. For some reason this confuses many people, particularly Americans :) There are a whole bunch of exceptions to the above rule; among the main ones are (1) don't assume that someone with an M.A. did a course for it; if they went to Oxford or Cambridge, they get an M.A. anyhow seven years after starting their course (I have one :)), (2) similarly, don't assume that a Bachelor of Arts degree is in an arts subject. There is at least one university which awards a BA for _everything_ except, perversely, Fine Art; thus it is possible to have a BA in Physics, (3) some places let you do a four-year course to be awarded a sort-of Masters' degree at the end of your undergraduate work. Again this is a new arrival since my time, so I have no idea how it works. Are you all bored now? Thought you might be. :) Cheers Mel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 1996 11:54:47 +0100 (GMT+0100) From: Bua Desiree To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Bonding/Goddess Message-ID: Hi! It's not big things that you can bounce back questions to, it's a hundred and one little things that a native USofA'an wouldn't even think about.I don't think Khenta was making accusations - I saw it as a fairly mild request to some of the newer members on the list to remember that there's a fair number of us from St. Elsewhere. And from the responses from other non-USofA'ans, I don't think Khenta and I are the only ones who feel that. There's been a lot more of it just lately, and I certainly was thinking of saying something. And, > Hi! I'm a new entry of the mailing. I'm An Italian university student and > I just got the e-mail and access to Internet through my university so do > be kind and if you write to me, use very simple words. Yay - another euro! This is supposed to be a Misty mailing list am I correct? *grins* Actually, this did stem from Misty.. it started many many moons ago, and the thread had died due to mutual agreement. Blades reinstated the subject (after most of us agreed to stop commenting on it, I might add). I haven't spoken about it, and I won't now. Even though it is one of the more interesting topics to me. What was the relevance again? Part of it was something about Misty's possibly being a witch, that stemmed to paganism and the definition of witchcraft, then satanism came in, and satanism vs. christianity. But we DID agree to let this thread die, folks, way back when. Mainly because it doesn't matter what people say; no one is going to change what they believe because of the Mercedes Lackey mailing list. But relax, my friend. We SHOULD be allowed to talk about things on here once they go a little off track. *sigh* In fact, we DO, and we HAVE BEEN. So please, stop yelling at us. Or should we not talk about school systems, educational systems, other books, other bookstores, -centrism, etc etc etc... I say it again (to the void) MISTYYYYYY! I can't remember, but Valdemarans would probably have access to that language as well. I doubt they'd have access to Iftellan, except maybe through those rare merchants who are mentioned coming through. One of my personas is a Healer-trainee at the Collegium from Karse who teaches Valdemaran to new foreign trainees from all Collegiums, so this is an interesting topic for me. Ter speaks Karsite, Valdemaran, Rethwellan, Hardornen, a little Shin'a'in and Tayledras, and a trade language used along the Karsite/Valdemaran border (something of a mish-mash of the two languages). -+AT+->--- Jenna Jenna-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu * http://members.tripod.com/~Stormcloud/index.html Stormcloud and the menagerie, Lady of the Mists, One in Black, Mistress of Hot Caffeinated Beverages, Goddess of Chat Rooms and Obsession "You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the king of the potato people and plead with him for your freedom, and you're telling me you're completely sane?" --Red Dwarf ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 1996 09:53:25 EST From: "Jenna Wilson" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Another braid.../ Elspeth visiting more spirits?
