So... what do you all think? Is this another Misty goof? My reply: I don't have the books to hand (me-+AT+-work, books-+AT+-home, too!), but remember the time span involved here; it's ~years~ between the time he gets blown open by the Gating backlash and the help he gives to Medren, and then a bit more time (not sure just how long, sorry!) between ~then~ and the aftermath of the rape scene. Since the healing channel didn't get 'blasted' open, it would be more difficult for him to use it if he didn't have a strong Healing Gift, right? Not impossible for him to use it, just more difficult. I suspect what we're seeing in the stories is the result of his working with a limited Gift in that area over a lengthy period of time. That's the best off-the-top-of-my-head I can come up with for it - anyone got textevd and/or a better explanation? Thinking about it now, though, I would _guess_ what people see as a common thread is respect and responsibility for the land. It's rather commonplace in US culture to associate those values with Native Americans. Unfortunately, this (1) is part of a tendency to merge Native American cultures into one monolith, which is historically inaccurate; and (2) is an idealized version of life on this continent before arrival of European settlers. In fact, I believe there is a fair amount of evidence that some tribes practiced widespread burning of forests, to create grasslands, and that some species may have been hunted to extinction by native populations. Some other elements of Tayledras culture that I've never read or heard of as part of a specific tribal culture (although I claim none of Cennydd's expertise): the utter lack of sexual taboo (easy acceptance of same-sex relationships, multiple- player trysts, etc.) -- I've seen some arguments that certain tribes were more accepting of homosexuality before the Europeans arrived, but never to the extent the Tayledras are; and the apparent lack of sex role stereotypes. Claris Smith wrote: >> I, for one, found the similarity mostly just in basic attitudes towards the world, animals, and the loose . . . mm .. . relaxed societal arrangements.<< Hmm. More relaxed than the official Judeo/Christian line on such things, maybe, but at relaxed as the Tayledras? They're so relaxed I can't even imagine living in that culture, because (growing up in the US and attending 12 years of Catholic schools) my psyche is to firmly imprinted with taboos & stereotypes. (I may not abide by them but I always feel like I'm reacting to them in some way.) Anyway, I've never read anything along those lines about a Native American culture, but I'm willing to be educated. I also don't connect the Tayledras with elves. They're too, well, earthy to be elven. This has always been a thought train of mine, at least as far as the Christian concept of marriage goes. I've always had the concept that if you're going to love someone and live with them.. love them and live with them. Dont be shy about it, dont hide it, just do it. I see marriage as almost a means of 'justifying' living with the person you love. Granted, there isnt such a stigmata assigned to it (at least here in America) anymore, and likewise with divorce. But then I have never been able to understand the problem with divorce. My parents were divorced when I was 5, and granted it was terrible at the time, but looking at them both now.. they never would have been able to live together. They were both changing in ways that made them incompatible. They had a happy, and love filled marriage for 7 years, why force them to stay together when they could not sustain the match any longer? Why force them to sustain a marriage that cannot be kept? Let them depart eachother's company when they both still care about each other, and with good memories of the years they had together. Personally, I would rather have them divorced as they are now, and both remarried and happy, than still be forced together and resenting eachother. Is is the Wiccan handfast.. I was out of town for a week, and it's taken me another week to catch up. Keeping up with this list is enough to give you sore wrists. Carpal tunnel and other RSI's really aren't anything to mess around with--but don't despair, either. It took my doctor about 10 minutes to diagnose, much longer to figure out what we should do. Many people (including me, thank goodness) improved without the surgery. And the surgery has also really improved over the last 5 years, according to my Mom, who has had both wrists done. Anyway, some of the ergonomics have been addressed, but I wanted to add a few more more tidbits. First, look at your keyboard. The tops of the keys should be FLAT or even tilted slightly away from you. Sounds simple and obvious, but few keyboards actually meet this criterion. Most "adjustable" keyboards actually adjust from bad to worse. I put little plastic feet on the front of my keyboard to get a better angle. Second, (apologizing for the commercial) try the Hand-Eze gloves. I found them at a craft store--I think they stock them for quilters--but some of the computer catalogs have them to. They are fingerless gloves with strong wrist support. They really helped me--I think they helped me learn/maintain proper position with my hands. They also keep your wrists and hands warm (I think warmth is a factor. My computer is by a window, and my wrists seem to get worse in the winter.) You do get some strange looks when you wander down to the main office in them, though. Next, consider your leisure /exercise activities. If you enjoy weightlifting, biking, etc., you may be aggravating the condition by a too-tight or improper grip. Talk to the pro/coach/whatever. Sometimes you can improvise cushioned grips that really help. Now if only I could take those grips to the grocery store--darned carts! Finally, one of the true signals of carpal tunnel is nighttime wrist pain/tingling/etc. Walk calmly to your local pharmacy and buy a set of wrist braces. These force your hands into a "neutral" position so the blood flow isn't constricted. While these were a major pain to wear at night and I don't think I ever actually lasted all of the way through the night in the braces, it was better than waking up at 2 AM crying with pain. Although I occasionally overdo and have some wrist pain, I am mostly symptom-free. I may need the surgery eventually, but as long as I can treat the problem with $10.00 solutions and the occasional aspirin, I'm happy. Sorry for the off-topic post....Lessee if I can scrape an ObMisty..... Do equestrians (and Heralds) have wrist trouble? All that rein-gripping and bouncing around...... Karal doesn't behave anything like what I would expect from a priest in a highly formal, hierarchical religion. I would expect at least some ritual behavior. I don't even know many Baptists who are as free of the outward signs of religious fervor, and Baptist is a fairly free religion in terms of the forms of worship in daily life. As for the miracle, I am not saying that it was unrealistic (which I agree would be a silly objection in Fantasy). The unrealistic thing IMNSHO is the idea that an obliterated High Priest and various other miracles would be sufficient to change the minds of the faithful. Human nature being what it is, I would have expected more of the Karsites to resist the changes more strenuously. After all, there are perfectly non-miraculous explanations for everything (except maybe the firecats, and even that could be an illusion). Of course, as I think about it, the fact that the changes involved sparing their children from the flame might have a lot do with the general acceptance of the Karites. Maybe? -----EOM On Thu, 1 Aug 1996, Lady Thessa wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Re: Braid: Karse Religion >>>by the way, Lilac Fairy, move over, I'm joining you, I'm a sucker for a person who's good with a language, and Cennydd's writing is good enough for my lust to show itself!!<<< Oh good! BTW, in Oklahoma, where I went to school and used to teach French, recent legislation (1990?) mandated foreign language education from 1st grade until graduation from high school (12th grade). In the early years, the students are introduced to their language, and as they move from one grade to another, their education becomes more detailed and demanding. The idea is that, by the end of their schooling, they will be comfortable and near-fluent in their language. -----EOM On Thu, 1 Aug 1996, Diana wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Re: americo-centrism >>>Actually it only becomes ethno-centric when you start thinking that your culture is the best and should be the only one.
