Or, the least negative prestige points... The Mercedes Lackey Mailing list does not seem to have a set hierarchy of users (it's often Mel vs. Us Annoying Members) but I can safely say there are two levels: newbies and listmembers. The newbies tend to join in the mayhem from day one. However, there seems to be a set amount of prestige on the list with some users compared to others; those that have been on the longest will get the jokes, be able to joke around with others, and correct new members. This is reflected with prestige. Flames on the mailing list are unlike flames anywhere else. They (usually) are not abusive or violent; and they (usually) come up only when a listmember has violated a protocol they know they should not have. *grin* The requirements for this game are ONE four sided die. Since you only go around once, this ensures a longer play time. The minimum anyone may move is two spaces; add one to the number you roll to decide the amount of squares you can advance. Under RP terms, this would be 1d4+1. Everyone starts off with 0 prestige points. There are five playing pieces: a herald, a mage, a mercenary, a bard, and a Shin'a'in. (*grin*) The POINT deck (representing massive gains in prestige) and the FLAME deck (representing massive losses in prestige) should be shuffled and placed in their respective spots. Both decks have random event cards peppered in them. The squares are labelled as follows: (this is why I said, print it out..) 1. START. Welcome to the Mercedes-Lackey Mailing List! 2. There's a picture of Van on this space. You can't move to this square in the beginning of the game since you can only go 2 squares and start at square 1. This square is used later, though. 3. As soon as you come on, you decide NOT to lurk and find out what is going on; you start asking questions that are in the FAQ. Lose 1 prestige. 4. Someone subscribed you to the mailing list by accident. Instead of making a polite request to Auntie Mel, you post something to the list along the lines of "WHAT THE HELL?!" Lose 1 prestige. 5. Post a thoughtful insight to the mailing list. Unfortunately, it's been said last month. Gain 1 prestige for trying. 6. Mel posts "Auntie Mel's Rules of Thumb," and you don't bother reading that either. You post (pick one) a chain letter, a letter requesting cards for that kid with cancer, or a warning about the Good Times Virus. There is a deluge of complaints from the listmembers. DRAW A FLAME CARD and lose 1 prestige. 7. You can not master the fine art of labelling your subject headers. Everything you say has a blank subject line. "Who looks at those things anyway?" Lose 1 prestige. 8. OS Wars! Lose 1 prestige. 9. DRAW A POINT CARD. 10. Your first post, after lurking, is hilarious. It is the talk of listmembers for a week. Gain 2 prestige. 11. You quote 20 lines of text, and then leave a one line response, with no signature. Lose 1 prestige. 12. LURK. This space kind of works like JAIL in the Monopoly game. It's split in half, one part labeled LURKING and the other part labelled MISSED MAIL ONE DAY. See the LURK rules later on for explanation of this space. 13. Attribution is the name of the game, and you're losing. Lose 1 prestige because you can't quote and label correctly. 14. You master the use of text evidence. Gain 2 prestige. 15. You master the use of text evidence, but you quote too much. Lose 1 prestige. 16. Lady Thess names you, without you asking for it. Gain 3 prestige. 17. Lady Thess names you, after you request it. Gain 1 prestige. 18. DRAW A FLAME CARD. 19. You pick a usename to use on the list. Unfortunately, it's a new age Shin'a'in name, like StarDance or FlameSinger. Gain only 1 prestige. 20. You pick a NON-Shin'a'in usename to use on the list. Gain 2 prestige. If the name mystifies listmembers for a long time (i.e. "How did I know Cennydd was pronounced almost like Kenneth?") gain 4 prestige. 21. After a big on-line argument which left people upset with you, the list discovers that you were right all along. Lose 1 prestige, but DRAW A POINT CARD. 22. Uh Oh. Illegal fanfic! Misty's lawyers contact you, and tell you to remove the offending fanfic (or filk lyrics) from your homepage. Lose a turn while you rewrite the HTML on your page. 23. HAVEN. Free space. (*grin*) 24. The mail is too much.. go to digest. See DIGEST rules below. 25. Someone posts a question on the list, and you answer it, not noticing that thirty people have done the same thing. No loss of prestige, but this is very annoying. (*grin*) 26. DRAW A FLAME CARD 27. One word: centrism. Lose 1 prestige. 28. Like scores of other listmembers, you consider yourself a writer. However, you actually get something accepted for publication. Gain 2 prestige and move ahead 2 spaces. 29. You decide to be cool and put indecipherable ASCII art in your .sig. You also start to type elitely (i.e. "2 b" instead of "to be," "kewl" instead of "cool.") Nice try, but lose 1 prestige anyway. It's old hat. 30. DRAW A POINT CARD 31. You go on vacation, and miss mail for a week. It was a busy week that you missed, though. You are so out of it that you delete the 700 mail messages out of sheer frustration and you decide to start over. Go to square 2. 32. You find yourself with more time on your hands now. Gain 1 prestige. If you are currently on digest, you can come back to full time and roll the dice normally. 33. You discover with all of your free time, that you have been posting incessantly. People complain about the volume of mail, almost all of it generated by you. Lose 1 prestige. 34. Something happened. Someone said something abrasive and abusive, or something happened in your personal life, that has sent you to LURK and not be able to post for a while. You disappear from the list. Go to LURK (square 12). 35. "But... but I love Herald's Creed!" Lose 1 prestige. 36. DRAW A POINT CARD 37. Piers Anthony! AAaaagh! Go back to Haven. If you're safe anywhere, you will be safe there... this square has a picture of Piers Anthony's visage on it. 38. One liner! With no reference! Lose 2 prestige. 39. Confusing new listmembers is fun. However, you seem to have gone a wee bit too far; your local Waldenbooks now has a sign up advertising: "OCTARINE GRYPHON, by Terry Pratchett and Mercedes Lackey. Date To Be Announced." Gain 1 prestige for being such an influence on culture, but lose 1 prestige because all the newbies are mad at you. 40. DRAW A FLAME CARD 41. Cultural Anamoly! Sometimes, ignorance is good. Your discussion about "topping" on the list generates laughs for days. Gain 2 prestige. 42. "Andre?! What's the big deal about Andre?!" Lose 1 prestige. 43. DRAW A POINT CARD 44. While the list goes on and on forever, the game does not. You have completed the circuit. You can not go further than this space on the board. Stop here, take your piece off the board, and note the number of prestige points you have. Wait for everyone else to finish the game. SPECIAL RULES: ============== LURKING: You've got too much mail to respond to, or there's just nothing of interest to reply to. Either way, you're lurking. When you lurk, you gain nothing. Take your piece, and place it on the LURKING part of square 12. You can come out of lurk by sacrificing 2 prestige or by rolling a 4 on the die. DIGEST: Some things in the game make you go to DIGEST mode. When you are in digest mode, you're reading your email slower, sometimes missing things because they've been replied to already. So you progress slower. Move two spaces a turn, until someting takes you OUT of Digest mode. POINT CARDS ============ These cards represent really cool things done on-list which cause leaps in prestige. The deck also includes random events which happen to everyone over the course of their online history, both good and bad. There are 20 cards that come with the game, along with five blank cards. 1 - You volunteer to do one of the myriad FAQs that the list has. Gain 5 prestige and go ahead four spaces. 2 - EVENT: Computer problems! Argh! Go back 3 spaces. 3 - You post something new, and humorous, and Misty-related, to the list. It is something that the list mentions even MONTHS after it was posted. Gain 4 prestige. 4 - EVENT: You get your phone bill for the month. $197.00! Online time is cut CONSIDERABLY. Go to LURK. 5 - You write a well, thought-out response to someone's abrasive post, showing you're the better for it. Gain 3 prestige. 6 - EVENT: More time on your hands! Use this card to get out of Lurk mode, or to get out of Digest mode. Save this card until used. 7 - Your latest song parody is a hit. It's so good, people quote it in their .sigs, they forward it to friends off list, and it's rumored that Misty herself sings it in the shower. Gain 5 prestige. 8 - Some people just can't separate fantasy from reality. Your mention of sheep on the list has a member flame you about sleeping with animals. However, everyone else realizes that you WERE kidding. Gain 1 prestige, and choose a player to lose 1 prestige. 9 - EVENT: The Men In White abduct you -- lose a turn while you try and escape from their evil clutches. Ignore Gyrfalcon's denials. 10 - You finally get your hands on a copy of SWORD AND SORCERESS III. You're the envy of hardcore Misty fans everywhere. Gain 5 prestige. 11 - You went to a Con and Misty was there. And she TALKED to you. Gain 6 prestige. 12 - Join a List Society. Roll the die: 1. Join the Ladies in Green. Gain 3 prestige. 2. Join the Ones in Black. Gain 2 prestige. 3. Join the Cat People. Gain 1 prestige. 4. Join the Men in White. Lose 1 prestige. 13 - Your Misty related web page is the envy of others. It's so good, that other people use it as a link for Misty on their web pages. Gain 5 prestige. 14 - Sometimes, coming back is better than staying. After a departure for a few months, you're back. Everyone says hello! Gain 3 prestige. 15 - EVENT: Your sibling finally is of age, and they want to be online too! Your time for reading email is cut down; go to DIGEST mode. 16 - EVENT: Vanyel, the list server, is down. Again! Lose a turn while you wait for it to come back up. 17 - Braiding! You are one who finally can braid effectively, quoting and atrributing correctly, and writing clear and concise subject headers. Gain 4 prestige. 18 - Your posts are always interesting and informative. People ask you things off list, and you constantly explain everything simply and concisely. Gain 3 prestige. 19 - You are getting so friendly with people onlist, that you start friendships with them off list. Gain 3 prestige. 20 - Tape trading! The ultimate in copyright violations, but a great way to make friends. Gain 3 prestige. FLAME CARDS ============ These cards represent really terrible things done on-list which cause people to get upset with you and they cause violent drops in prestige. The deck also includes random events which happen to everyone overt he course of their online history, both good and bad. There are 20 cards that come with the game, along with five blank cards. 1 - You post, for the twelfth time, a message that has high amounts of quoted material and not enough new content. Cennydd flames you, literally, because you've done the thing that YOU complain about the most. On list or off list, your choice. Lose 5 prestige. 2 - You get in a snit because someone's been taking what you write and claiming it as their own. Your hissy fit causes mayhem on the list, and you alienate several members. Lose 5 prestige, and go to LURK. 3 - EVENT: You get your on line bill for the month. $200.00! You decide to get a different service provider. You have to unsubscribe and start over; go to START. 4 - Without thinking about it, you respond emotionally to someone's post, starting an argument so bad that Mel has to come in and physically stop people from talking about it. Lose 4 prestige. 5 - Instead of letting it die, you decide to ressurrect the discussion about religion once AGAIN, causing people onlist to get very upset. Lose 3 prestige. 6 - EVENT: More time on your hands! Use this card to get out of Lurk mode, or to get out of Digest mode. Save this card until used. 7 - You disagree with something someone wrote, and write off a scathing flame. Unfortunately, the person who you attacked ... it's Mel. Lose 5 prestige, and go back to START, since she gets so mad she deletes your account. (j/k, Mel..) 8 - You get a little carried away, and insult a listmember personally on-list. Lose 4 prestige, but send a player of your choice to LURK. 9 - "I like Misty's stuff, but I don't like that homosexuality she injects into it at all." Lose 4 prestige. 10 - EVERYONE is aggravating Mel. She posts a message to the list chastizing EVERYONE's behavior. Everone loses 3 prestige. 11 - You won't let talk about Bippy the Mime die. Lose 5 prestige, and go back four spaces. 12 - Argh! Your .sig is 12 lines long, and you never ever ever change it. Even though people complain. Lose 4 prestige. 13 - EVENT: Not enough time to answer all the email... especially since there's talk about Star Wars, Prostitution and Religion, and no talk about Misty! Go to Digest mode. 14 - You know that uncle you hate because he keeps making the same jokes? That's you, in email. You keep on saying the same things over and over again, and they have gone from "humorous" to "annoying." Lose 3 prestige. 15 - Academic post! Aaaiee! Lose 3 prestige. 16 - You can't take a joke. Something obviously intended as humor, you take the wrong way. Lose 6 prestige. 17 - "When is OATHBLINDED coming out?" Lose 3 prestige. 18 - "Filk? Filk sucks!" Lose 3 prestige. 19 - EVENT: That early morning cup of coffee you have when you check your mail just went into your keyboard. Maybe because he was more youthful in it, and more naieve... and... I dunno. And also being young myself. I preferred Tylendel over Vanyel. He seemed so... delightful. (: Wouldn't mind meeting a real life Tylendel. Or Vanyel... or Stef, but of course, Stef and Tylendel are one person... That was the only Misty Book that made me cry... so far. But actually, since reading Misty's books I've been more sad because the Heralds, although they live a life of danger, at least they had each other. My life is sort of like Vanyel's, or Talia's before they were chosen. And that's what makes me feel so sad. It's sort of like Misty knows how I feel. But alas, these characters eventually found happiness, so there's hope for me yet. (: You know, the Valdemar books are really addictive. So far I've met 2 people (outside this list) that love Misty's books. And I introduced my sister to Misty and she loves it. It is so cool. I need to read more of Misty's books so I can keep up with all the postings. Cos it seems I'm always lost in the dark. Another thought. Has anyone considered that Kris could have been Mage-Gifted? I had this thought when I was rereading the retraining scene in AFlight (Rats, can't find the textevd). He says something like, "If he Looked in a certain way that made his eyes strain, he could See energy fields and auras." It's when he's trying to help Talia learn to center. He sees the energy doubles of Talia not quite meshing.
