To anybody that cares, I'm Say'a'chern. Heya Alex! Welcome to the madhouse! :) Out of curiosity - I've seen a few people write "Say'a'chern" and "saych" rather than the "Shay.." and "shaych" that I remember reading in most of the books - is this a derivative from Shin'a'in rather than Tayl'e'dras or Valdemaran slang? Anyone know where it's quoted without the "h"? And don't be concerned about the Shaych bit - we're a pretty miscogynous (sp?) group around here anyway, though things have been pretty fiery of late. Ancar? all the > blood path mages hanging around? Allll together now. Free will. :) (Sorry, it's a periodic rant of mine). :) It's pretty clearly implied that the gifts are physical things (Maar breeds for them, Kethry doesn't have mage-gift when her soul is dumped into another body) - they're going to turn up in the genetic lines anyway. Now, there's a very good reason why Mind-magic is so prevalent in Valdemar - they've basically been breeding informally for it, for centuries. You select the people with mind-gifts, throw them into dangerous situations and have them associate with similar others. Any resulting relationships / offspring are more than likely to have mind-gifts and the genes are probably reinforced (even if they're recessive). Compare against, say, the Eastern Empire, which from the sounds of it, has been breeding in the upper nobility, for mage-gift, for ages. And Kimberly wrote again: > Okay, now for my real ObMisty: Why is the Companion to the Monarch's Own > always a stallion? Genetic dispersion? If you wanted to introduce new genes / new blood into a closed gene pool, a stallion is definitely the way to do it, for purely practical reasons. Or perhaps it would just be verrry inconvenient to have the Monarch's Own Herald incapacitated because his/her companion was pregnant.. Rachel wrote: > In Arrows Fall, when Ancar caught her, why didn't Talia use her empathy to > make him feel her pain? She tried, two or three times. Hulda (or Ancar's pet mage) shielded him from her. Hmmm, there's a very big deal made at one stage that Ancar would skin the mage alive if he dropped the shields on Ancar (In Arrows Fall), but in subsequent books we find Ancar's a Master-class mage, and probably a reasonably powerful master-class at that. There's no hint of that in Arrows.. The argument that he wasn't taught at that stage doesn't seem to hold up - Winds-of-Whatever quite clearly implies that Hulda hooked him on Magic power at an early age (probably as soon as she had to flee Valdemar). Welllll, *grin* probably depends on your definition of unnatural. Such a wholesome, youthful face, jaunty stride, open, pleasant, self- effacing and above all modest manner.. How could it be anything -but- unnatural in the USA. *grin duck & run like hell* (If you need me to point out that this is a joke, it's too late, run don't walk, to your nearest psychiatrist.) Seriously, remember that people have no trouble understanding the -effects- of magic, it's simply that they ascribe those effects to different causes because of Van's spell. For historical effects, they view them as tales. Current effects, they view as charlatanry, or mind-magic applications and the like. Heralds didn't forget companions - guardian spirits - there's no reason for them to forget Demons either (simply that they wouldn't think too much about how they got here and how to send them back). And Ramona wrote: > Thalkarsh was the highest level demon they'd ever had the opportunity to > prosetheletize to. [The "RL" example of Kerry from oz would IMNSHO be an > "intra-planar" visitation.] Hmph. If you think OZ is intra-planar, well, let me tell you.. *grin* And I'm worried about this trend of treating me as analogous with demons. Granted, I may come from a land of burning heat and sand and all the rest. Granted, I may lurk and drag people off every so often into hellacious private convos, but I ask you, does that make me demonic? If you prick me, do I not say "ouch!"? If you cut me, do I not bleed [fire]? *grin* I rest my case yer'honour. I ain't no demon. (And Cennyd, shaddup about double negatives. *grin*). Hmmm, Lady Thess, assuming my long-ago-dubbing (dubbing, not drubbing) still stands, I think that if I'm going to get confused with demonic influences, that I might as well take up my true mantle of GKMC - Genetic Knight of Mutant Chaos.
