Anyone know where it's quoted without the "h"? You know you're right. Kimberly pointed out to me that I spelt it wrong, so since then I've been typing Shay'a'chern, but now that I think about it, I think I was holding the Book in front of me when I was typing that word into my .sig. And I think that it may have been Shay'a'chern. Unfortunately I haven't a copy of the book, so I can't check, but anybody out there who has a copy, maybe you could find out. I'm very curious. (cause I hate to be wrong. ) I think I was looking at Magics Pawn (of course, my favourite book!) Anyway, another thing, Kerry, you're from Australia as well??!!! Cool! And to think that I thought I was the only aussie in this group thus far! Actually I found another aussie trying to enter this group but for some reason she can't post... hmmmm. She'll get it fixed. So what do the rest of you think? Was >>Tylendel more sweeter and innocent and preferable, or was he evil? And >>who would you prefer? I don't think Tylendel was evil. Nor do I think, however, that either Tylendel or the young Vanyel were "sweeter and innocent and preferable" to Stefen or the Vanyel of later years. The relationship between Tylendel and Vanyel was simply not healthy to begin with, nor was it between two very healthy (or even quite sane) individuals. The young Vanyel's dependency on Tylendel was just as destructive as Tylendel's refusal to consider the effects of his actions on Vanyel. While Tylendel's actions are understandable because of his emotional attachment to his twin, they also reveal him as immature (rather than innocent) and blind to the value of the (normally ;->) "once in a lifetime" love that he had with Vanyel. The "hardness" of the older Vanyel is perfectly typical in someone who has suffered so great a hurt, and I find it difficult to fault him for it. What I do find difficult to accept is that the older Vanyel could turn around and essentially do to Stefen what Tylendel had done to him--the relationship between Stefen and Vanyel seemed healthier than that. I have always had problems with Vanyel's "suicide" at a point in his life when he finally had everything to live for and when he had other options available to him that would have left him alive and able to live "happily ever after" with Stefen. After being told for three books that Vanyel had it within his power to change the outcome of his dream/vision/Foresight, to have him walk right into the future he did not want was annoying and seemed out of character for the man he had become. Someone who all by his lonesome had the power to "level half of Haven," whose power could be boosted by Yfandes, and who had the power of several nodes to draw on, had no need to drain himself, his Companion or the nodes in battling the extra wizards who showed up in the Pass. All he had to do was blow out the bases of the walls of the Pass (or turn them to mud or do something that was similar but equally effective). The walls would have collapsed on top of the wizards and army in front of him, and Vanyel would have learned by accident what others found out later--that Maar/Falconsbane/Whoever's current body was mortal and that he routinely abandonned it whenever the mortal body became too damaged to repair easily. Even if Vanyel thought the evil Wizard could survive such an explosion and its results, his objective was supposedly to stall the wizards and army until help could arrive. This tactic is just one of many that would have accomplished that without Vanyel having to call down a Final Strike. So, as I see it, Vanyel's suicide for selfless reasons was even less excusable than Tylendel's suicide for selfish reasons since Vanyel knew the value of what he was throwing away, understood what his death was going to do to Stefen, and, as a combat-seasoned mage with decades of experience, should have been able to avoid putting himself into a position where casting a Final Strike would seem like the only option. I've only just subscribed to this list, but I've been lurking for a little while, so I think (hope?) I have a vague idea of what's going on. This is about the third time I've tried to mail this message. I was having trouble getting it through, so I mailed 'Auntie Mel'and begged for help. She's such a sweetheart. Anyway, my name's Tamara, and I hail from the Great Down Under (AKA Australia), where I'm suffering through my last year of secondary school. I discovered Mercedes Lackey about six months ago, through her collaboration with Piers Anthony (apologies to anyone that offends). After reading LHM, I was completely hooked, and devoured everything else that I could find. Unfortunetly, here in Oz the bookstores have no knowledge of what good fantasy (or sci-fi) is, so I'm dependent on hideously expensive mail-order services for my much-needed fix. Just one question - could someone please explain to me what the 'Ladies of the Pink Wand' are? Thanks heaps, I'm hideously confused! My question is what would happen if Rolan would get killed but Talia didn't die? Would another Companion come out of the grove and Choose Talia or would another Companion come out of the grove and Choose someone else? I warned you that this was weird one. My .02: IIRC, in the LHM series, there are several examples of what happens when a Companion is hurt or killed. I think that one of the comments made is that if the Companion dies, the Herald is likely to die just from the shock. Remember what Tylendel went through when Gala repudiated him, and then got herself killed taking out the pack of wyrsa? And the Mindhealer Companion (Ghost?) and Tashir? Tashir was in shock when Ghost was getting beaten, and he'd only ~just~ gotten Chosen, which is when the Bond would be at its weakest...! I think that, given the depth of Talia's bond with Rolan, if he was killed, she'd probably die from heart failure. It'd ~probably~ be stronger than the lifebond with Dirk, but I'm not absolutely sure about this. If she ~didn't~ die, I think another Groveborn would show up and Choose her, and it'd probably be Rolan! After all, if Heralds can come back as 'ordinary' Companions (of course, _we_ know there's no such thing as an 'ordinary' Companion! =)), why can't the MOC keep coming back? It'd sure give the MO a lot of advantage in seeing the best way to help the monarch...What do you think? Lani Hunter a.k.a. Another reason is in the work room with Savil and how she took him almost over the breaking point and checking to see if he would attack her. The way they described it in the book was Trauma. But I don't believe that always just because as Jaysen said "If Van had really cared for Tylendel he would have stopped him". The same can also be said about Lendel since if he cared for Vanyel he wouldn't have brought him into the insane rage that was part of Lendel. Was that to horribly confused and scattered? I seem to think that way and when I try to explain It comes out even worse. Norse Mythology 101: Loki had two daughters by his first wife, Glut: Eisa (Ember) and Einmyria (Ashes). He had three offspring by his second wife, the giantess Angur-boda: Hel, the Fenris wolf, and the Midgard Serpent (Jormungandr). He had two sons by his third wife, Sigyn: Narve and Vali. Y'all remember Leslac, don't you? Well, suppose, as some of you (including myself) said, that he did marry the Lady's sister from "It was a Dark and Stormy Night." If they had kids, and if both of them sang to the kids, wouldn't that be considered as child abuse? Or, if Misty writes a story about it, don't you think she'd submit it as a horror story? Maybe *maybe* the children might have the Bardic gift, and if Leslac is jealous and tries to get the Bardic gift, wouldn't the kids be traumatized for life? This is only rhetorical, so don't take it seriously. Love, Summersong Points to Ponder: How does the guy who drives the snowplow go to work in the mornings? Please tell me that you don't mean that someone is EVIL because they have contimplated suicide. I have thought a lot of things about myself-hopeless, helpless, yes suicidal, but I have NEVER considered myself EVIL for those feelings. I think that if you do truely mean that-than you are lucky enough to never have had such feelings, and that unless you have and can walk in mine or anyone elses that has felt that the world would be a better place without you, that maybe it is a subject that one should remain quiet on. It is one thing to have personal feelings about sinfullness, etc. on the subject of suicide, but to label someone as evel because of a total feeling of abject hopelessness, well,, I don't know how to end this without being a flame, which I do Not want to do. But, please, dont think of someone as evil because of their own hopelessness. And Heather Alexander? *grin* *sigh* *swoon* *thump.* Well, Jake m'luv, Some people can't afford to be on a first name basis with the staff of Firebird Arts and Music. I have never heard Leslie Fish(shock!) or Julia Ecklar, or Frank Hayes. I can't afford to just go ordering C.D.s and tapes when I have no idea if I'll like them, so I order basically what I happen to have heard. Oh, wait, Leslie fish did some back-up on one of Heather's albums I have. OK. I go thooked on Heather Alexander when a penpal sent me a copy of most of the "Pheonyx:Keepers of the Flame" album (still my fave). I Loved it, my friends loved it, we ordered it, and Firebird ran out. grrrrrr... I would love to get ahold of that. where was I? oh, yeah, but you see I heard Heather before I bought it. I do have the "Heralds Harpers and Havoc" tape, and that's my only basis to judge some of these singers. After Misty's performance as Selenay, I elected to buy another Heather C.D. instead of "Mercedes Lackey Live."
