And to my surprise, Sean Connery's voice ,while deep for a human, seemed too high-pitched for a dragon to me. Still, he'd do a good Companion mind-voice (There! An obMisty!!) You know, I didn't hug anyone who needed it, so here's a giant bear hug from me (ANybody remember that scene in the motor club from Oh My Goddess! ? Yeah, like that!). We've heard *so* much about you, and now I can see why. OK, I finally have to say something about suicide. I tend towards Cen's position in his last post (Mishima? you've heard of Mishima?! I AM NOT ALONE!!!). As for 'Lendel, well, he just was out of options, I think. Who knows, had he survived, it *might* have happened again, and even if it hadn't, Van wouldn't have become the person able to save Valdemar, IMHO. My feelings on 'Lendel's act specifically are mixed, though. Depressing topic. You know, they say you always wake up before the actual moment of death in a dream. Ha! I had a very clear dream once, inside of a man's head in some medieval setting, long story but he eventually ended up killing himself, and yes, it was the only way to save the other people involved. The alarming thing about the dream was how much of it took place AFTER he opened his wrists! I do believe Misty says it's VanYEL, btw, which means that Savil might indeed be pronounced like Seville. (BTW, new persons, that's TEXTEVD, as in "text evidence". There've been some pretty creative spellings of that lately! Just thought you'd want to know ) Because, I have no textevd or 'spokenevd' or anything else for this, although I think I read it in QO. *Claris Smith, Art/History Major, GM, sf/fantasy Artist, Gung Fu Student* *Mail me for info on Razorbattles convention & Art Show!* *ccsmith-+AT+-comp.uark.edu; 4045 Abington Ct. To: Subject: Pronounciation/drugs/sex/Dragonheart Message-ID: <09AUG96.13512389.0036.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> You guys, I've answered the pronounciation question before. According to Mark Shepherd, who is Misty's housemate and dear friend and I think jolly well ought to know how she pronounces Vanyel, it's von-YEHL. Frankly, this Missouri girl still calls him VAN-y'l, but I'll freely admit it's dead wrong. The real mystery is -- how do you pronounce Talia? TAY-lee-a? TAH-lee-a, like Talia Shire? Ta-LEE-a, like the girl in my African-American history class last semester? The creature who parented Stefen spent his money on drugs, and Medren comments that Stef is "death on anyone he catches playing around with them." So there are recreational drugs in circulation in the Collegia crowd. Kids today. I definitely see what you guys mean about too much detail spoiling love scenes. It can. But, you know, I've always felt like sex was an important and distinctive piece of any relationship. It's not just a fade-to-black; what people do in bed is indicative of how they feel about each other, what kind of people they are, what they want and fear in love. To me, saying "and then they had sex" cheats the reader out of some important knowledge. I'm not really talking about a blow-by-blow (damn, did I say that? You know what I mean), but a clue might be nice. For example, this man is Vanyel's beloved lifebonded Tylendel, and yet he's not. How the heck would you respond to that? Would it make you nervous? Would you get caught up in a fantasy of being back with Lendel? Would you be comparing the two? I think that adds interesting dimensions to their relationship, in and out of bed. Frankly, I think the coolest love scenes around are in Swordspoint. They are not graphic, but you definitely get a feel for what Alec and Richard are like. Frankly the most explicit line is "At first he was rough, and then he was gentle," and that gives you more of an insight into Alec than almost anything else would have -- *through his style of lovemaking.* Even really explicit scenes, like Zach and Trevor's looong love scene in Drawing Blood, can, if done well, reveal a lot about the characters. The problem IMO with bodice rippers is that the sex is always the same. As if everyone has identical sex with their true love. Wrongwrongwrongwrong!! NOT TRUE!! I think love scenes are great when they're personal to the characters involved. And yeah, I could make it up (and did), but I could have made the whole book up. It wouldn't have been the same. I bought the book in order to get Misty's ideas, not mine. I have my own ideas. (Notice?) And, oy, Dragonheart was not my idea of a good movie. The script was the shoddiest piece of work I've seen in a long time -- character development unmotivated and/or bizarrely unrealistic, which drives me bananas. And there's really IMO no new ground to be covered with sadistic evil bastard villains. Frankly, I'm bored with them after a lifetime of reading high fantasy. So Danya, you are not alone in the world. But the dragon was cool-looking, and I really liked the set-up for the plot. I just wanted a chance to fix the script. Ruth, who introduced me to Misty in 1988 (she was 13 at the time, I was 23), pronounced Talia as TILL-ah. YUCK! I tried to tell her that I *really* thought it was wrong, but she wouldn't listen. I personally use TAH-lee-a, or TAHL-ya. I'm originally from northern NJ ("We don't have accents! Honest!"), but have spent the last 13 (!) years in Massachusetts, 7 of them in Bah-stohn :-) Other names I'm not sure I'm pronouncing right are: Cymry (SIM-ree?) Ylsa (ILL-sa?) Anyone have any idea? *********************** >The creature who parented Stefen spent his money on drugs, and Medren >comments that Stef is "death on anyone he catches playing around with >them." Didn't Skif mention something about drugs when he talked about his past on the streets? I was beginning to think I'd spent too much time writing in Hollywood! Some pet peeves: Why give the movie a specific date then use locations, settings, impossible combinations of armor, etc., etc., that set any medievalist's teeth on edge and bear absolutely no correlation to the day you chose?! Why have a villain who looks like he never stopped being a teenager (my husband's pet peeve) and who never really does anything evil besides acting like a spoiled brat? (Kept reminding me of John in THE LION IN WINTER.) The Arthur stuff had no business being in the film. It added nothing and annoyed the Arthurian afficianados. Honorable Knight of the Old Ways (whatever the heck that means--I'd presume Celtic, but he did not dress, fight or act like a Celt) turns into an amoral conman? Because a kid disillusions him? So it's okay to junk his entire code and prey on innocent villages? I don't get that at all. The story simply had holes that no self-respecting writer should allow in his/her work. The characterization was illogical at best. The acting was by and large mediocre. The costuming and set design was horrible. And the rubber shark at Universal Studios looked better than the dragon's head in the lake. (Even ILM's people have come out with bloopers that they wished hadn't made it into the final cut.) Oh, well. Enough. You get the idea. I was not impressed. Unless you happen to be a lesbian: then the women are afraid you're going to jump them in the bathroom at work. Puh-leez!! What makes them think any decent lesbian would be interested in them anyway??? I happen to have better taste, as well as a long-time partner. I've always pronounced Cymry as (KIM-ree) though I've been told that it is *supposed* to be pronounced as (SIM-ree). Ylsa, I've generally pronounced as (YIL-seh) though I know someone who drops the last 'a' altogether and pronounces it (ILS). As for Talia.. (same person as above) pronounced that as (tal-YAH), I pronounce it as (TAHL-ee-ah). But then I also pronounce Vanyel as (VAHN-yel) or almost (VAIN-yel), now that I think about it.
