At one part, they had everybody stand up and greet each other and hug, the guys in our youth group were just paranoid, it was the funniest thing to watch. The girls didn't care too much, because we're hugging sort of people, but the guys just had these incredibly funny expressions on their faces, two of them had their girlfriends with them, and they just hugged their girlfriends the whole time. It was hilarious! Has anyone ever been there? If you live in the San Fransisco area, I definitely suggest going, whether you're homosexual, or straight, or Christian, or whatever, take one Sunday and go, it is a really neat experience. You can really feel the love in that church. It so cool. > Unless you happen to be a lesbian: then the women are afraid you're going > to jump them in the bathroom at work. Puh-leez!! On the Tylendel vs. Vanyel thread: Someone mentioned (Lost the message again; sorry!) that they had fallen in love with Vanyel's character, however fictional he may be, and I just wanted to say I'M SO GLAD TO HEAR I WASN'T THE ONLY ONE! Part of me felt really #$!*&#! silly mourning and missing a fictional character, but then part of me couldn't deny the way I felt. (If he were "real", I would probably have the worst case of the Pink Wand ever!) Having such strong emotions about a piece of fiction were enough to make me start questioning my sanity for a while there (I'd never had that kind of reaction to a book before or since), but I eventually just came to terms with the fact that I am crazy! I said it too! Hahaha!!!!! I admit that starting a book from the bad guy point of view made me frown, but I liked it. It makes the book different. I don't like cliff-hangers either. Piers is terrible with that in the Apprentice/Adept series. You have about 5 main characters or more and you cycle through them all. Ack! Plus, in the last two, they split up all the good guys into a team you hope will win, and one you hope won't. Then they show you both sides. In one chapter, you're basically rooting for the bad team!! That's why I like Misty more. A lot more. Yeah, everything winds up happy in the end, but you don't know who might die, get hurt, lost or emotionally scarred. Her characters are so real, I can't just say, "Well, the good guys will win." They won in Arrow's Fall, after Talia was captured and Kris was dead. And so on... About them always winning. In AFall, Selenay remembers something about how Valdmar's priests aren't allowed to pray for Valdermar's victory, because "there is no one true way." Until Valdemar loses, we'll have to deal with her finding ways to make the story tragic by killing characters off and injuring others. Sounds dark, doesn't it? Welllll... allright, so maybe it is. So consider yourself warned. *gryn* On suicide: I'm not going to say whether I think it can be honorable or not :b I just think it takes up a kind of desperate courage, but arguing this is like arguing on whether an emotion is good. People do lousy things, people do good things, and the stronger emotions drive you to more extremes, and there are "good" and "bad" cases. =) But OTOH, I always wondered about self-maiming... like, it starts out when you want to slash your wrists and just leave everyone and yourself alone, by going away; somehow it goes into wanting to transmute the screaming in your head into physical, "real" pain, and to shut everything up that way, like the weird death-music... drown it out... it gets addictive. Then (hopefully) one day you look down and say "gee, I'm going to have scars for the rest of my life. If I want to live. And if we come back again, I'm going to carry emotional scars and walk around the afterlife like this <"clunk"> " ::smile:: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mr. Bluejake wrote: >All right. What was the drug that 'Lendel >was going to take after Van suicided? Well, that was Stef, not 'Lendel, technically :) And it was argonel. For some reason, I keep on assuming that medecine isn't drugs, although I must have been told a billion times that the medecines that most doctors prescribe are indeed drugs,a nd that the stronger ones can kill you. ::sigh:: I have a thick head... even in books when they set up this scene where the person has set up a romantic death scene and plans to leave by taking _strong_ pills, I always seem to forget I did forget about the tran dust in OBreaker series, though. Summersong, 'Lendel could block Gala's knowledge of what he was doing. Textevd: p 181 MPawn. "I can block her from knowing, I've already blocked her from knowing about the link to Staven." So Gala didn't really know about it, thought she might have been concerned. She was probably more worried about him being sick, though... And when Vanyel was away, he was worried Stef would forget about him. That would imply bonds fade with distance, even lifebonds, wouldn't they? And both Stef and Van were (sort of) Empaths, and they couldn't sense each other... so how is it that 'Lendel oculd feel Staven through the bond always, and Talia could feel Rolan? Is it something to do with mind-links versus soul-links? 'Lendel said his bond to Stav was deeper than his bond to Gala... interesting directions, isn't it? *gryn* And... how's it that Van didn't mind Stav's bond with 'Lendel and was rather envious of Gala's? And... for you, Danya, you incredibly lucky person *gryn* *hug* who's gotten to take a peek at _Storm Breaking_... does Misty mention anything in it about speaking spells? Because 'Lendel used a _spoken_ spell, in a foreign tongue (surely not Tayledras, they must have better magic than that) for unleashing the wyrsa, and the magic we've seen so far has all been mental. Misty keeps on changing her defintions! (makes life interesting... *gryn*) Joy and inspiration, Kimber(doodle)ly =) P.S. That's like saying Misty could never write about a pirate on Lake Evendim if she didn't know anything about boats well enough to satisfy readers. You don't know something, you do research or you go find someone who does know. It is perfectly possible to talk to your shaych friends about such things and have them read your work for authenticity, to run down to your local bookstore and pick up books on gay and lesbian sex, and to read gay and lesbian fiction that does include such scenes. >^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ >Okay, on the homosexual thread -- Have any of you seen "The Birdcage"? That was pretty stupid, because I've >heard worse cursing in other movies that were rated PG-13, and the topic of >homosexuality should not be an "inappropriate subject for children"!! Well, according to Daily Variety, that was the reason for the rating: "some language, adult themes." I am more than a little sick of confronting the ridiculous notion that discussing shaych relationships or reading a book or watching a movie with shaych characters is going to "convert" a child to a shaych "lifestyle." ARGH! Most kids have their orientation figured out by the time they are five or six years old, whether adults want to admit it or not. "Conversion" to a sexual orientation--straight, bi, gay, transgender or whatever--just simply can't be done, especially by the time someone becomes a teenager. And "lifestyle"? If I hear that word one more time, . . . ! (makes life >interesting... *gryn*) I'm half way through, and so far none of the spells in SB are spoken--although there are many, many written instructions in Urtho's tower (about his experiments and how to work his magic devices) that need to be translated before anyone is willing to try using anything. Don't hurt me! The subject line is a JOKE, it's a quote (anyone know the movie? brownies for those who recognize my favorite comedy of all time.) But I was thinking about Danya's comment about gay people ending up with a severe case of death in fantasy novels. Now, I haven't read Tanya Huff or Melanie Rawn, but there are books where this doesn't happen. Guys, go out and find Swordspoint -- which has a sweet, fairy-tale kind of ending with a very Alecesque reunion -- or Ecstasia, where Rafe and Paulo actually have to deal in the sequel (Primavera) with growing old together and becoming less beautiful and more, well, married. Drawing Blood is also extremely cool -- technically horror, really, but less so than Di Tregarde, IMO. The horror in Drawing Blood is all about insanity, and the unknown, not monsters. Trevor and Zach have some pretty extensive problems -- okay, really extensive. But it's a spiffy book, and they sure as heck don't get punished for being gay. (For being psycopaths, yes. Not for being gay. I'm kidding. Zach wasn't a psychopath.) My theory is, if it's out there in the lesser-known books, it'll creep its way into the mainstream sooner or later. We just need to communicate with authors and publishers and tell them what we like. If they think it'll sell, they'll print it. As for falling in love with characters, heck yes. Who doesn't? (Before I discovered fantasy, I was in love with Amy March. Then I moved on to Lucy Pevensie, and whole new worlds opened up ). My all-time favorite is probably Branwen from Diana Paxson's White Raven. Dianora, from Tigana. Laurana from Dragonlance (with honorable mention to Gooldmoon for being such a sweetie, and to Tika for that red hair). Valentine, from Ender's Game (even if she was a little young.) Leetah and Nightfall from Elfquest -- though the grown-up Ember in the new series has a lot going for her. And from Misty, Talia and Diana. Kerowyn just for sex appeal, but mainly Talia and Diana. You guys have no idea what I'd do to get a book about Ylsa and Keren in their young and romantic days. Oy. It would be so nice for once in my misspent life to be able to fantasize about someone who might fantasize back. I'm not saying that the deaths were a "punishment", just that the authors have a habit of killing one or both of the shaych couple, usually for no good reason while they let straight couples live "happily ever after". Melanie Rawn is particularly notorious for this (The first volume of her Exiles series went flying across my living room when I hit one such scene--something a book hasn't done in my home in a long time. The one before that was--I apologize to everyone who liked the scene--MAGIC'S PRICE when Van died.).
