Sorry that I haven't written lately. 'tween bookstore owner stuff and family crises, I've been a raving lunatic! 'though some would claim that I am anyway =) So a welcome splash to all newcomers and list returnees! I just received the fall preview issue of "Publishers Weekly" and guess what's coming out in January? That's right a Valdemar anthology called originally enough _Friends of Valdemar_. Start haunting your bookstore's shelves in Dec. I promise to post the day I unpack it! Holly Lisle and MZB have a collab coming out this fall in hardcover. ***************************************************************** 'Dessa mentioned Ann Maxwell. Her "Dancer" books are great mind candy. Science fantasy light. ***************************************************************** The ever gracious Lilac Fairy remarked on the talent of the illustrator Thomas Canty. I'm currently lusting after one of his prints to add to my small but beloved art collection (I've got a signed Brian Froud with a remarque :>) And yes, you are correct about _Swordspoint_ and _Thomas the Rhymer_ being the only fantasty novels By Ellen Kushner in print. Milady, while we're adding to our lustable list for the LotPW, might we consider Tanith Lee's Azhrarn. I know he's bi but he seems to prefer men. Raven haired, pale skin, dangerous and demonic---ooh! Or perhaps Simmu? Apricot hair and the ability to change gender. I'm getting warm just contemplating the possibilities! ******************************************************************** When Kerry wrote, "We're a pretty miscogynous..." perhaps he meant unhomogenous? Sir DemonMage? (Am I pushing Someone's buttons by making up words? Am I misbehaving just to get His attention? *giggle*) *************************************************************** OOOOH Cennydd! You flirtatious, titillating, provocative creature! Do you perform table dances? Oh Object of Worship from Afar, it occurs to me that you find many things, "unbearably hilarious in a slightyly naughty way." ************************************************************* Heather, you are right. _Ecstasia_ by Francesca Lia Block is great. Have you read any of her Weetzie Bat stories? BTW, Caryn, this bookstore owner keeps _Ecstasia_ next to _Primavera_ in my SF section. =) ************************************************************* Lady Thesseldown was correct when she said that advanced reading copies are usually uncorrected proofs. I know from collecting first editions that even after a book is released that corrections can and are made in subsequent printings. You'd think that with spell-check programs there would be less not more errors. Sigh. ******************************************************************** Kimbala asked how Need could be an Adept yet not work with nodes. In researching WoC for Kory, I read a passage where Need mentions that she is/was a Smith-Adept but never elaborates about what that entails. Don't forget that Need existed pre-MageWar when the rules of magic were different. At one point, Falconsbane is musing about Urtho and how there is less power available than before the MageWar. ******************************************************************* I'm certainly the last one to chastise anyone about his/her opinions since I carry my own soapbox ;> But perhaps thinking twice before hitting the send button is in order. There seems to be a lingering touchiness about the list. Mayhaps all of us need to think twice before posting something that could upset another's feelings. Not that I don't enjoy a bit of heated exchange ;> I just don't like to see people's feelings getting hurt. Undine Never ever attend a convention that is sharing a hotel with multi-level marketers. I don't recall any textevd for this, and personally, I don't think it's too likely - The MOC is *immortal* anyway, the heralds know this, so he's not going to be regarded as *normal* whatever happens<<< Someone already pointed out that there is no evidence that the MOC is immortal (which simply means "incapable of dying"). I wasn't making a claim that the MOC was the same entity as a claim about the text. I was saying that this had been a proposal on this list. I forget the exact argument, but I know that it was proposed and there was some defense and evidence. Anyway, the point is, there would be nothing to prevent the MOC to take on a new name with each change of life, and there is a massive amount of evidence that the Companions will do quite a bit to minimize their appearance of abnormality (Gwena's entree from the Grove and the subsequent mind-games of the Companions). Anyway, the idea that the "different" MOC are the same Companion would certainly explain why the MO can theoretically survive the death of his/her Companion and then bond with the replacement. -----EOM On Thu, 8 Aug 1996, Dessa wrote: BOM>>>Subject: 'Lendel /LotPW /licenses /etc. >>> Obviously you weren't around when Cennydd got Glith.
