People don't just become evil for one moment and then not evil for the next. You can't measure any person by a single action; you have to look at them as a whole. If you would define them by their actions, define them by _all_ their actions. And just because someone is insane, does not necessarily make them evil. Yes, Falconsbane was insane, but Maar, IMHO and so far as I could tell, was not insane, just evil. Similarly, it is possible to be insane without being evil. In today's courts, insanity is a defense, albeit an overused one. People who are so overcome by grief, pain, or what not, need help. Punishing them for the actions they commit when they are unaware of what they are doing is not only unfair, but it's wrong in and of itself. Tylendel didn't realize he was summoning Wyrsa on innocent people. He thought they were celebrating Staven's death -- therefore, all the Lesharas were "in on it." None of them were innocent, as far as 'Lendel was concerned. Now, he was wrong, but you can't call him evil for making a mistake in judgement like that when he was half blinded by his pain anyway. Gwenna (eventually) admitted it. They make mistakes. They are, after all, still people (reincarnated Heralds and all that). Gala was upset. She saw 'Lendel doing these horrible things. She lashed out by repudiating him. Maybe she was angry and upset and hurt and reacted without thinking. Maybe if they both had lived, Gala would have taken him back. I've been mad at my friends before. While I am mad at them, I don't want to be around them, necessarily. Now, I've never repudiated my friends, but then, they've never summoned Wyrsa on me either. At any rate, no matter how I feel at the time, I still love them just as much. It's like tough love. You're parents love you unconditionally, but sometimes, if you really upset them, they may do something that really hurts you. I don't think that Gala's actions right then were the best judgement of whether she loved 'Lendel or not. Yes, I do think it's rather odd that none of Misty's other characters went through the depressing tragic mish-mash. Well, that's not completely true. Kero went through a lot, and she was a bit bitchy at times (in a very endearing way, I think). And Talia went through a lot, but that was as the end of the book and her recovery time was mostly off-camera, so you really didn't have to see much of her being depressed. Frankly, I think some of her more recent characters (like Elspeth, especially Elspeth) could use a bit of depth to them. They don't have to be dark and brooding like Vanyel, but maybe they could suffer a bit of strife in their lives. And that's okay for you not to like Vanyel (as I think Heather mentioned in her post.) I happen to like him a lot, but everyone has their own tastes. It just saddens me to hear people trounce on him because he's mortal and flawed like the rest of us. Personally, I would have swooned if he'd but deigned to glare at me. :) Barbara magik-+AT+-socketis.net "I surrender all controll To the desires that consume me whole... I haven't seen enough anime yet. But I'm trying hard! As for lusting after fictional characters... oh well, now there's a tough one. Of course I love Tylendel... and fervently hope I meet a real life Tylendel... curly blond hair and all. And I loved Jonothan from the Tamora Pierce "Alanna" series. He's so cool. Ummm, fictional characters... Well, if this were extended to include anime... well, I must include the boy from Ranma... can't recall his name. And from TV I like the guy from "The single guy" Johnny... well, he is sort of fictional. (: Ummm. I love Kris... he's so adorable... I know... swooning over fictional characters.... but fortunately I'm among kindred spirits... Oh yes, Shadow Lover... that Bunny song... I love it. It's ... magical hehehe. all you need now is to put music into it and I'm sure it'll be the talk of the town! Yep, yep, yep. Mmmmmmmm, Snickers.... Nope, what it should really be is an anime. I mean Velgarth. I think it would be much better as an Amine. for one thing we could get better effects... and then we could draw Beautiful Companions, AND draw the characters in the beauty only depicted through japanese Anime... drool. I vote we turn Velgarth into an Anime! (And this way, we don't have to get Danny DeVito as Vanyel. (: ) Ummm, well, that's it for this post. cheers. Wind to thy wings... Gregarious (people-loving) and loner are the words you want - he can live without the constant company of other people. And IMO, he wasn't cold, so much as just a little reserved - he could hardly let his guard down and talk to people - when he tried, he got rebuffed, or hero-worshipped even by most of his fellow heralds. Van liked people, just didn't have the gregarious aspect in his personality - the need to be around groups of people all the time, to form cliques. And loners often make the best friends. Putting it baldy, but sometimes you find that loners/non-people people are the most interesting around simply because they've got their own thoughts and they spend time on their own to come up with their own thoughts and ideas, rather than bouncing 'round in groups with people of similar thoughts and forming a group consensus about every issue. TINAF, but I guess the bit above kinda touched a nerve a little bit - *grin* I admit, I'm a little of a loner too. I like Van. A lot. But then, I like people who don't crowd me, people who need space of their own and are perfectly happy to do their own thing. And I like people who are perfectly comfortable with silences. But then I've been told I'm anti-social before. :) *grin* I'd make a rotten bf I think. :) I could/can only take so much of doing couple things together before I start to fray at the edges. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shadow-lover wrote: > Ok... Don't read on if you're easily offended, 'cos I'm not. :) I agree with the comments that 69 doesn't take that much imagination. Nor do most things, really. Unlike other suggested, I wouldn't consider a reversal of the passive-active positions (or top/bottom or whatever descriptors you wish to use) to be all that remarkable. Van had been in hetero sex situations even before he met 'Lendel and given that both he and 'Lendel were anatomically similar, it doesn't an Einstein/Urtho to figure out "Hey, if he can do that, so can I." I hadn't considered it before, but thinking about it, I'd say it was more a case of more sophisticated techniques. Diff positions, or angles or techniques or whatever. Deep-throating might have been it, but somehow I doubt it. If I had to lay a bet, I'd probably make the suggestion that with a little flexibility oral and anal sex is possible simultaneously given a reasonable position. > No fear; nothing shocks me. Exactly. That wasn't quite what Gala -said-, but that's -definitely- how it must have felt to 'Lendel. He's lost the bond with Gala, Gala's -died- and died horribly in front of him, trying to fix -his- mistake. His purpose of revenging his brother has failed. He's got almost nothing. Two thirds of his life have already been ripped away, horrifically. Even if he did remember Van in those moments after the Gate energy shocked him back to awareness, how could he have possibly thought anything except that Van would shun him too. His -companion- repudiated him and suicided - how could he bring himself to even test the bond with Van - he had to have been sure Van would spurn him too. He had nothing and no-one and the pain and emptiness was too much. And like Heather said, he wasn't evil. He was a 16 yr old boy thrown in -way- over his head and quite off-balance. I have nothing but sympathy for him and even more antipathy towards Leareth for creating and orchestrating the situation. I defy almost any teenager to behave rationally in that situation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Talya wrote: > In a message dated 96-08-08 06:42:34 EDT, Lady 'Reesa writes: > > >Um, at some unrecorded time, Kerry "He Who Shall Not Tell My Sister About > >The Sheep" Mealing wrote: Heheh. *grin* Considering some of the things I've told you 'Reesa, I think that sounds like a very good idea. ;) > Oooh, tell tell tell! *g* Kerry, you'll be nice and tell me ALL about it > won't you? Stand in line! :) But being serious for a nano-second, I don't think I've quiiite got the mentality for threesomes, or rather it would almost have to be in a tripod relationship. Too iffy otherwise - either I'd get a little jealous about my partner, or concerned that the third member only reallly wanted to sleep with one or other in the couple. Hmm, what was that line? Don't share? Right, got it. Whew, wow, okay Heather, you've got competition for long posts now. :) Cheers, Kerry. "You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. Can you really blame him for what he did, >when his own Companion didn't try and help him? Look, if Gala interfered, Lendel will not have gone for revenge or rather not use Vanyel as a channel for magic. Therefore in simple words: Gala interfered --> Lendel either did not ask Vanyel for help or never gone for revenge --> Vanyel never used as a channel for magic --> no backlashing of power when Gate close --> Vanyel's gifts channels will never be blasted --> gifts will never be discovered --> NO LAST HERALD MAGE! I think Misty purposely make Lendel die so that there will be Vanyel the Demonsbane, make Savil die so that Vanyel will seek revenge and find the evil people coming in and blast himself to pieces, make Kris die so that the war between Ancar and Selenay will start or Valdemar will perish! /\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\/ /\\//\\//\\//\\//\\//\\ >Also, the painkiller....you know, the one used on Van to keep him from >knocking the palace over in pawn, and the one talia uses to >suicide....I'm sure it's abused... I don't think the drug used on Vanyel was abused. I don't think anyone at that time will want Vanyel to blast Havens into pieces and kill all the Herald Mages and Heralds and Bards and Healers and all those innocent people. I don't think you can get rid of them, I doubt that you will notice them in the first place. The mage Kero brought along sensed them watching but did not know what was it. My favorite character, it's a toss-up between Van and Firesong. One of my favorite scenes is the one where Savil stops Van and Lendel's mock-fight. I thought that was pretty funny. :) -+AT+->--- Jenna, Lady of the Mists, and the persona menagerie, Mistress of Hot Caffeinated Beverages, Temporary Leader of Ones in Black, Goddess of Chat Rooms and Obsession...
