Announcing the premier of: Absolutely For'shava A sitcom based on the Vows and Honor Duology by Mercedes Lackey Script by Jennifer Saunders Starring Jennifer Saunders as Kethry Joanna Lumley as Tarma Julia Sawalha as the voice of Need Scene: A road leading toward a city somewhere in Velgarth. Kethry and Tarma appear, riding horses (saddles by Versace, tack by Gigli). Kethry is wearing hot pink, Vivienne Westwood mage robes; Tarma is dressed in her Lagerfeld black leather miniskirt, black patent, high-heeled boots and Jean Muir chain mail bustier, and is smoking a cigarette. Tarma (inhales and blows out smoke): How long have we been riding? My bum's so numb it'll be a week before I can get my legs together again. Kethry (mumbles): Since when is that a problem for you? Tarma: What? Kethry: Nothing, sweetie. We've been riding for half an hour- Tarma: I need a drink. Why I ever let you talk me into this- Kethry: It's not me, sweetie, it's this buggery bollocky sword-thingy! You know what it's like, darling. It wants me to rescue some woman who's in terrible danger, sweetie. Tarma: Bloody sword. Why don't you just chuck it in the nearest dung heap? Kethry: I can't, sweetie. It won't let me. Bloody thing. Look, there's a city up ahead. Maybe that's where this bloody woman is. Tarma: Oh, yeah, I know that place! It's got great shops, sweetie, with gorgeous, expensive things! Shall we stop for lunch, darling? Have some caviar and little nibbly things? Kethry: We really should go find this woman, darling. Tarma: Oh please, Keth? Lunch first, and then shopping. Kethry: All right, all right. But then we have to go rescue that woman, sweetie. Tarma: Oh, all right. How big an emergency can it be, for Goddess' sake? I mean, she probably just needs help accessorizing an outfit or something. ------------------ I DID warn you... No, either the wife or sister (don't remember exactly, more probably the wife) of Don A. Wollheim, the founder and editor of DAW Books, who died a few years ago. She and another woman (whose name I don't remember) have been editors since then (it's kind of printed in each DAW book, on the second page or thereabouts, where the address is as well). >(Wait until > you find out who/what is in Iftel and who/what is protecting them!) Argh! Grrr! Don't tease me that way! Don't do that to me poor European who will have to wait _years_ till the paperback comes out... ;) (and it's no consolation that I won't be online anymore next month so that I can't be teased anymore at all. sigh. sob) Walk in beauty Khenta Blaufalk aka Skyfire & Aar Goddess of Incomplete Vocabulary and Garbled Grammar =================================================================== Hellrung's Law: If you wait, it will go away. This was of course back when we only had TWO star Trek series (no ds9 nor voyager). My reply: I've been watching Trek since the original series *first* showed, and have been a rabid fan ever since. My parents watched it with me, and while they have never become aficionados, at least they understand when I tell them that it's a 'Trek weekend', and they won't be seeing much of me. Trek weekend = 2 or more fan club meetings, putting together the department newsletter, going to events/movies with other members of the ship, proofreading the Membership Reference Manual (this weekend!), etc. We have all-night make-your-own-pizza parties where everybody brings their favorite episode and we howl all night long! (I always give my neighbors fair warning beforetimes, and also tell them they're welcome to bring a pillow and play, too!) We're putting together a First Contact opening night skit and scenery for one of the local theaters, and have even converted a golf cart to a Klingon Bird-of-Prey (and we have the videos to prove it!)...We collect books, stamps, posters, toys, blueprints, weaponry, uniforms and friends. We also use our club as a base to collect cantabs for Ronald MacDonald House, cancelled stamps for UNICEF, blood for the American Red Cross; we have our 2-mile section of highway that we've 'adopted' and keep cleaned up, and we help each other, whenever and however we can. One of our people is up for a regional award; she saved two lives when she helped an injured woman give birth (mother and daughter are doing fine). We help each other learn about first aid, self-defense, good nutrition, hot-weather safety, hurricane preparedness, astronomy, computers, grammar and English, and anything else we can get something written up about, or talked about. We've spawned 4 other clubs from ours, and new people are signing up all the time. 'Trekkie'? You betcha! 'Trekker'? That too! Trekkie came first, and then some folks decided the term was too undignified - and Trekker was born. Same animal? Yup. Don't let it worry you, if you're just discovering the wild weird world of Trekdom - just live, learn, and have fun. =) %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% I honestly don't remember what was my first 'fantasy' book - all I'm sure of is that, by third grade (7 yo) I'd gone through the stuff at home (Arabian Nights, Mother Goose, Robinson Caruso, Moby Dick, The Odyssey and The Iliad, Dante's Comedia, Hans Christian Anderson, Pride and Prejudice, Tom Sawyer, etc.), and that Mom went to bat for me with the school I was attending and got them to let me check out stuff from the 'older' shelves. There I got to meet Andre Norton's Witchworld series, the Basidiumites from the Mushroom Planet, Robert Heinlein's juvenile stories, Lang's Fairy books, Mary Stewart's Merlin stories, and the Curdie books. Those are the earliest ones I remember. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Tremane - Frankly, I like him, and his sections of the stories so far. Let's face it, Valdemar isn't all Heralds and mages and Healers and Bards; ~most~ of the people are farmers and traders and crafters, and I suspect that in this, Hardorn is similar to Valdemar. Tremane and his situation let us see into another section of life on Velgarth, and he reminds me very much of Paksenarrion's Duke (from Elizabeth Moon's wonderful series, the Deed of Paksenarrion). The Heralds and the Collegium are supported by a solid underpinning of stubborn, tenacious people, and I was glad to see Misty showing the building and maintenance needed for that support. I'm not saying that I agree with everything he's done, but I do understand his mode of thinking at the time. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Well, that's all for now - have to keep the braid short, or it blows up the server! Wasn't there an explanation (or at least an implication) of what would happen when Darkwind stopped Firesong from killing Aya? >Does a Tayledras have more than one bondbird in her/his lifetime (if the >bird doesn't die prematurely)? I don't understand the qualifier at the end of this question. The Tayledras scouts/mages seem to be able to have one bondbird at a time, but they can apparently bond with another bird if something happens to the first one (look again at Starblade). Message-ID: <960820.153018.EDT.JWSCHM00-+AT+-ukcc.uky.edu> Heyla all, Just read a new fantasy book that's being "touted" as a YA/Adult crossover book. The title for the U.S. is _The Golden Compass_ and in the U.K. it's known as _The Northern Lights_, by Philip . . . (uh, I just blanked on the last name) Pushman, I think. I think people on this list will be interested because it is about a society that has something like the Companion link, only deeper. These people have a "daemon" that talks to them, stays with them (can only travel a short distance away), loves them, and can assume the shape of any animal until adolescence. I wonder if anyone's done any kind of survey (formal or informal) about the type of people attracted to this kind of literature. There was a discussion earlier here about people here being loners. Could this be the type of people attracted to books which have a concept of a friend who'll always be with you and love you? Perhaps that's also where the attraction of a lifebound, or a soul mate in this reality, comes from. Can anyone think of other books with this motif? Off hand all I can think of, other than this one and Misty's Velgarth, are the Honor Harrington books. Any others? ****** A semi-whine/rant here. There are a number of us who can be considered lurkers. Usually this is because we're shy, not as articulate and witty as the rest of you, have little time on our hands, etc. Please be kind and think about the little heard from members of the list (who think of themselves as part of the family) when you're making generalizations. Besides, I like these I may have to hunt for cover but I like the Tremane scenes better than the Valdemar ones in SW & SR! Especially in SR, I have no sympathy for Firesong's problem and find it boring. Karal & the artificers are intresting but not gripping & many of the rest of the Valdemar people seem to be going through the same motions as they have before. Hmmm..perhaps there was some event that created two purposes for the universe where there was only one before, a star dying at the wrong time perhaps.. And I used to love Connections when it was on PBS, before cable stole it. Here's proof I'm wierd-I refuse to get cable because they won't give me the channels I want. They insisit on my paying for stations I already get just fine for free and taking stations (for example MTV) I don't want and paying for them of course. It's like calling a pizza place and haveing them tell you "Yes you can have those toppings but you'll have to take[insert three toppings you can't stand here] also." Also, what do I need with another 40 channels of the same old schlock? Why can't they give me stations from other countries? We take the cost of cable and go buy videos each month instead.
