Other books on this motif have to include all Anne McCaffrey's books with dragons in them, and her books about telepaths. The bonds in the dragon books are definitely lifebonds since if a dragons rider dies then the dragon suicides, and if a dragon dies the rider is said to be a shadow of their former self if they survive. In her telepath books the ability to know anothers thoughts leads to very close connections between characters, although I wouldn't call them lifebonds. :) Rachel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Aug 1996 12:24:03 +0930 From: "Ailsa n'ha Winifreyda" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Companions as previous heralds Message-ID: <9608210254.AA74618-+AT+-bilbo.cc.flinders.edu.au> I know that this has been discussed before but I didn't read anyone stating that they think that Kerowyn's Companion is Vanyel's Aunt Sayvil - she certainly has the same wryness that Sayvil had. Poe * Once upon a midnight dreary, while I wandered weak and weary, Over many a dark and dreadful road and long-forgotten moor-- While I stumbled, nearly dropping, suddenly there came a clopping As of some horse nearby stopping, stopping--but what in this world for? "'Tis some traveler, " I muttered, "coming now across the moor-- Only this, and nothing more." Ah, distinctly I recall, it was then late Autumnfall And the dying Sovven fires wrought their smoke across the moor. Eagerly I wished no morrow, desperate I had sought to borrow >From escape surcease of sorrow--sorrow for Le'shethanor For the rare and radiant maiden the Star-Eyed calls Le'shethanor Nameless *here*, for evermore. * And the sobbing, saddened yowling of the Sovven winds' dark howling Chilled me--filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before So that now, to the beating of my heart I hid, repeating, "'Tis some traveler wandering, winding now across the moor-- Some traveler, like me, wandering, winding o'er the moor-- This it is, and nothing more." Presently, my soul grew stronger, hesitating then no longer, "Sir," said I, "or Lady, truly your forgivness I implore; But I was lost in self-reproach, and so gentle your approach, That I scarce was sure I heard you"--here I returned to open moor-- Darkness there, and nothing more. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no shepherd ever dreamed before; But the silence was unbroken, and the night still slept unwoken, And the only word there spoken was: "Le'shethanor?" Merely this, and nothing more. Back into my hollow creeping, oh my soul within me weeping, Soon again I heard a rustling somewhat louder than before. "Hasten," said I, "To the hedge, something must be at the moor's edge-- Let me abandon now the fear's ledge and this mystery explore-- Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore-- 'Tis Sovven winds, and nothing more!" In Winds of Fate (pg 349), when Starblade is captured by Falconsbane, his bondbird Karry is killed. He is devastated, but it doesn't kill him or permanently harm him. In the same book, when Dawnfire is trapped in her bird's body (pg 341), she realises that her bird (or at least its spirit)is dead, she is devastated, but it doesn't harm her either. Starblade has two more bondbirds after Karry, the one controlled by Falconsbane, and the one Darkwind finds for him, Hyallar(sp?), so Tayledras must be able to have more than one bird. Also, Darkwind's brother Wintermoon is bonded to two birds at once, two owls IIRC. ********************************************** I hate to have to ask, but who or what is Bippy? Hmm..this got me thinking.. Alberich would have to be "old" looking, but obviously very fit. I'm not sure about Connery's physique but last I looked it seemed to be turning a bit to flab (as if he had to suck in his gut like it seemed that Shatner always had to do -- Shatner DID have to right? It always looked that way to me!!). So I was thinking..who's (for want of a better term) old but fit? Ricardo Montalban!! What about them did you find annoying? Well, I didn't really find the footnotes annoying.. well, ok, maybe I did, but not in a negative way, but more like in a tedious "ugh no, not another footnote!" way. I think I'm just not really used to reading footnotes. I know some of you more literary types are used to them, but I've never read (previously to Good Omens) footnotes, nor footnoted myself, in any of the reports I've ever written (I like references - you know "Six hierarchal levels of DNA organisation have been described (Pienta and Coffey, 1984)"..). I DID find the footnotes hilarious, which was why I was glad I didn't give up on reading them. (My favourite has to the be the footnote on British currency...). In the end, I think that the footnotes added to the whole book, which was why I wrote that I thought the they were intergral to the book. IOW, I don't think the book would have been the same (as good) without the footnotes! And yes, I an definitely seconding Kory's recommendation!! Also, for help with the > biblical, and many other references..look at the Annotated Pratchett > File, o'er at the L-Space website (http://www.lspace.org, iirc).... When I skimmed over this message I thought the question was whether the type of people attracted to literature are loners. (I know that's not what the blurb says, but I'll go with this thought anyway :) ) You know what? I think that yes to some extent, book lovers (of any genre I'd say) are somewhat antisocial... Come on, I "double dog dare (any of) ya" to say that when you were engrossed in a book that it was easy to drag you away from it (to eat, watch the telly with the family, go out to dinner with family/friends, or even do what you KNEW you were supposed to do (like STUDY/do HOMEWORK <- I personally think that one's one of the toughest - If I know I'm going to be busy, I won't pick up a book -- too hard to put it down).. If i'm into a book, I generally don't want to talk to ANYBODY!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Vivian Choh "I'm all that I claim to be.
