Darkwind's brother had two birds at the same time, didn't he? They can most likely bond with as many birds as they want to over the course of their lives. Look at the lifespan of the birds as well. Is this the impression ~you've~ >gotten from those sources, or am I reading more into it than is there? Actually, Pernese dragons have horrible longterm memory. Their memory is excellent for a day or so, then falls off dramatically after that. (That's how the riders can convince them to go after Thread again and again.) So, theoretically, a dragon that survived his/her rider for a significant period of time would simply forget that he/she had ever been bonded to one. (Moreta's gold remembers as long as she does because golds are the smartest of all the dragons.) The symbiotic relationship between dragon and rider is necessary because the genetic engineering done on the dragons created some flaws that make them incapable of surviving without a human partner to care for them (e.g., oil them regularly). The most significant flaw is the dragon's inability to consistently remember to picture a destination before going _between_. Dragons with riders can and do go _between_ without taking those riders with them, but such dragons are usually the golds and bronzes (i.e., the smarter ones) and they usually have something that is clearly focusing a destination in their minds (e.g., Ramoth goes _between_ to Southern Weyr without Lessa when her egg is stolen; most of the other dragons who join her there take their desitnation image from her). So if a dragon did not go _between_ from grief immediately upon the death of his/her rider and if that same dragon had someone to tend to his/her needs, the dragon could possibly survive for quite a long time. The problem would be that, without the direction of a rider, the more time that passes, the more likely the dragon is to go _between_ without remembering to picture a destination, accidentally suiciding in the process (which is essentially how Holth died, taking Moreta with her). > >ObMisty: Wasn't it in one of the T&K stories that Warrl told Tarma that >he thought the Star-Eyed would take ~both~ of them into l'eysha kalenedral >when Tarma died? ~Has~ Tarma died? It's interesting, in a laughable sort of way. At least there's strong female characters. And it might be campy, but it's something unusual, even if both Xena and Hercules are mythologically wrong (which drives me up a wall!) I'm constantly saying as I'm watching it, "Wrong name. Wrong character. That person never did that..." Erm... Doh! Don't know, but Misty said somewhere in LHM in a description about Vanyel that everyone bleaches eventually to white hair, blue eyes. I can't find it, but I swear I saw it! Something like "But Vanyel proved more resistant than Moondance" I think. It's something to due with pigmentation, so whatever has pigments, goes and fades to something without pigment. Green eyes have pigment, blue eyes I'm not sure because I don't want to dig up my musty old Biology book before school starts, and I think grey eyes are fairly pigmentless. *gryn* Lady Crysania also wrote about grey/silver eyes; I don't think I've seen grey eyes mentioned anywhere, either, but OTOH silver is a shade of grey. Mmm, Vanyel's son, the one with Moondance and Starwind -- Brightstar, I think his name was -- also didn't bleach, and he was living in the proximity of a Heartstone. Really? *looks interested and curious* How d'you do that? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\///\\\ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And one or two Misty thingys that I couldn't resist: Was it that Vanyel had a closer link to Yfandes (through the link to the Companions?) or the fact that he was a Herald Mage that he could feel the Heraldic Web? Because Kilchas couldn't, (or hadn't) and Talia didn't understand Beltran's death, and wouldn't, Keren said, until her second year. Textevd: p29 MPromise. "Vanyel could 'feel' every Herald and Herald-Mage in Haven" -- -- wait, before I keep on quoting, why only in Haven and not further? Is that b/c the link between Companions is limited by distance, unlike the link between 'Lendel and Staven, which 'Lendel said wasn't, or was that b/c of his reach or sensitivity or what? As I was saying. "Vanyel could 'feel' every Herald and Herald-Mage in Haven, all tied to him by a kind of tenuous network of lines of life-energy with identitity as plain to him as if he could see the faces. Most Herald-Mages could follow the line of anyone who had shared magic with them; Vanyel could follow the line of anyone who had "shared magic" just by virtue of being a Herald" And p23 MPromise, Yfandes says "You need to be touched, you humans" what does *that* mean? The Companions still share just about everything the humans have except for maybe the hands, they *were* once human, they still remember -- wait! *do* they remember fully? How much do they remember? As much as necessary, remembering as they go, a portion, what's been done to them that they hold themselves so different? Or that she held herself differently? No, wait, hang on a sec again-- on p61 MPromise "Have you thought about the way we resonate?" *Do* Companions resonate with their Chosen, or just those two, and do they mean a magical resonance? And oh, one more thing, related to Ailsa's. Why is it that only node magic resonates? What about shamanic magic, does that have the same effect? Just as powerful, but from the direct source rather than a flow of power from all living things. ::shrug:: Well, I think that's it. I would have braided more, but I don't know anything about Star Trek or filk... *sheepish gryn* TTFN, and fare well, everyone. =D Cheery goodbyes, Kimberly. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 96 18:05:27 -0400 From: Korendil To: Subject: Braid: The Early Years Message-ID: <9608222211.AA12982-+AT+-raptor.icubed.net> >Ok, after all the discussion that's been made recently about the best >"Valdemar filk"... it sounds like everyone has enjoyed Shadowlover (I >think I've got that mixed up, you know what I mean!), and behind that >Oathbreakers.
