Rene Auberjonois was great!! I told him that a lot of us on this list like him (Odo anyway) and he laughed and said what kind of list is it. I think he got a kick out of it. But that wasn't the best part. Picture this, a small used bookstore with aisle crammed to the top with books, seven whole shelves filled with sci-fi and fantasy books (more space then most book stores). Scanning the shelves, what do I see, do my eyes decieve me - A COPY OF SWORD AND SORCESS III! Oh wonders of wonders, sitting right beside it is a copy of S&S IV. NOt only do I find those two books, I also find copies Marion Zimmer Bradley's (duh, I forget ehat it is called exactly) Fantasy Magazine stories. One from 1994 and one from 1995. I missed them when they were first released. Not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR count 'em FOUR MISTY STORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gee, I'm not excited am I? Well, when I saw those books I actually said "Oh, gods, I can believe that I found these books!!" Boy, did I ever get a strange look from the lady next to me. I'm not quite sure if it's cuz of what I said or the fact that I practically pounced on the books and clutched them to me like someone was going to steal them. I also called someone ke'chara. I had to explain that one and I'm calling my younger cousins, littles. As in Aunt Gina, I'll take the littles out to get some ice cream if you want" WHO? "the littles, you know the kids" Gee, I haven't been readong toomuch Misty have I? I know next to nothing about Charleston despite the fact that its only a few hours away.(Heck Columbia is only an hour away and about the only place I ever go there is Riverbanks Zoo). So, your help will be most earnestly appreciated!! I was a little worried about the move at first but the more I learn about Charleston, the more I can hardly wait. ******* Diana wrote in response to "Talking to yourself is a sign of impending mental collapse...." >>I always thought it was a sign of intelligence. Couldn't find anyone smarter than yourself to talk to.<< To which Ramona Responded: >>I'm in BIG trouble then; I scold/chide/encourage the silicon, microsensical, macroencephalic idiot savant on my desk, which some have postulated as talking to one's self. ;)<< Oh boy, Big Trouble is right! I'm a chronic mumbler at things. I don't only talk to myself; I talk to everything and anything that might need talking to--books, tv programs, computers, cars, my cats(well, they are more intelligent. Little devils live the Life of Riley--never work at all ). I'm going to have to more careful of what I talk to!! ******* Cennydd: >>I was talking about the replacement. Definitely *not* Rutger Hauer, who is too roundfaced for Alberich. Besides, it is mentioned that Karsites have dark hair. Karal, Alberich, Ulrich, Solaris, etc. are all described as being "of a type" and they are all brunette.<< I remember Karal commenting at some point that all Karsites were of a type. I just couldn't remember more than that. I was judging Hauer on the attitude of his character more than his looks. I don't remember much about the other captain. I'm just going to have to breakdown and watch Ladyhawk again. Its a good movie; but it falls among those that I only watch when the mood strikes me. I've never paid too much attention to the Captain other than the fact that he is the adversary. I was too fascinated with Matthew Broderick's character. His monologues to God are priceless. *snipping quote from Magic's Promise p29* >>This was something I was going to mention (I was reviewing this passage yesterday, and it bothered me). Why did Van have this connection to all the other Heralds? Van makes some remark about needing an especially strong Gift to detect the network between the Herald's, but that really doesn't explain why he would be the *only* one to see it. After all, there were others, such as Savil, who were probably more sensitive to subtle magics.<< I think the oddity here has to to with the wording. The problem line is "Most Herald- Mages could follow the line of anyone who had shared magic with them; Vanyel could follow the line of anyone who had 'shared magic' just by virtue of being a Herald." The sentence is confusing. I think it means that for Vanyel, any Herald qualifies as some one he has "shared magic" with. Vanyel is the most powerful adept Valdemar has known(supposedly). He has extreme talent not only as a Mage but in mind-magic as well. Possibly the proliferation of his gifts gives him this ability that others lack. Ability to "follow the line" seems to rest on level of talent. Since any magic must have limitations, he can only feel the ones in Haven because further out would be outside of Vanyel's personal range. ******* Ok, now I'm going to go back a few days Kimberly: >>And p23 MPromise, Yfandes says "You need to be touched, you humans" what does *that* mean? The Companions still share just about everything the humans have except for maybe the hands, they *were* once human, they still remember --<< I think that Yfandes is referring to the purely human need to be touched. You know a hug, a shared grin, a hand on the shoulder. The little signs of friendship that she can't give him. Humans crave contact with one another in a different way than Companions would be able to give. She means he needs a human friend--not so much a lover but a real true friend. You notice that by the end of the book he finds that at home with his family. Then you continued: >>No, wait, hang on a sec again-- on p61 MPromise "Have you thought about the way we resonate?" *Do* Companions resonate with their Chosen, or just those two, and do they mean a magical resonance?<< I don't think she means magical resonance. I think she simply means the natural resonance that exists in any close relationship. She has been relaxing and enjoying the trip while Van sleeps. I don't mean this critcally, but don't go hunting for whales in creeks--they just aren't deep enough!!!(remind me to tell you the tale of Dr Gettys and the Literature Conference sometime). Of course, if you were just seeking a topic, then hunt whales anywhere you want to! ;) ******* Claris: >>I thought this was funny: Motto of Clardy's Cobbler Shoppe in Fayetteville (my home): We Doctor Shoes, Heel Them, Attend to their Dyeing Needs, and Save their Soles. << LOL!! I love it. I'm going to put that one in my quote file. ******* Ok, all for now. I've just spent most of my weekend going through stuff I've been squirreling away for the last five years. I really hate moving. But at least I have enough warning to do it properly! Now, I'm going to crawl into a good book for a while. Actually though this is fairly common in fantasy writing. We never seem to find out much about the economics of a society. Not that I want a textbook instead of an adventure but...What are the major imports/exports of Valdemar? We've heard of Traders, where do the trade routes run? Is it just small, extremly pricey things or do they haul grain into Iftel? For that matter, what kind of crops do they raise in Valdemar? Knowing some of this sort of thing, if it is worked in a little at a time and in a natural fashion, adds a depth to a fantasy world. IMHO, this is one of the strenghs of Anne Mcaffery's Pern. Shortly after this was published he dissappeared while visting Mexico. It was one of the great disappointments of my life that once I had found this book they suddenly quit giving those stupid assignments in English class where you had to go look up twenty words in a dictionary and report on their meaning! The woman has stage presence -- she tends to dominate any scene she is in, not unlike our favorite heroine. And she could work out some -- look at how much Linda Hamilton changed for Terminator from what she looked like in Beauty and the Beast. And I really believe that Ms. STone can act -- especially lately, she's been getting better parts. Does anyone at all agree with me, here, or am I just insane? :) Barbara magik-+AT+-socketis.net "I surrender all controll To the desires that consume me whole...
