I've wanted to read that "lesbian priestesses telepathically link to purple rhinos" for ages! MZB has mentioned it a few times in both the S&S anthos and in her fantasy mag. ********************************************************************* Jenna liked _A Well-Favored Man_ by Elizabeth Willey and Cennydd mentioned that he found it boring. I liked it, finished the prequel yesterday and started on the 3rd one last night. They remind me of the Amber books by Roger Zelazney--feuding family of warriors and sorcerers that can travel to different realities and contact each other with Keys (Trumps). I'd like to nominate two of the characters to the lust list of the LotPW- a luscious sounding sorcerer, Dewar and the Prince Heir Josquin *drool* ****************************************************************** About the Sword & Sorceress anthologies: Yes, they are wonderful! They are full of great fantasy stories. Sad part is that only S&S 13 is still listed as available. So if you see any of the others, don't waffle! Grab and revel. If you enjoy the S&S anthos, you might enjoy MZB's fantasy mag. About mags: has anyone else read "Realms of Fantasy?" I had a subscription (from issue 1), but I let it lapse. Issue 1 bugged me, since the ad said that the main article was going to be an interview with Melanie Rawn. Sure enough, it had the Michael Whelan cover from _Skybowl_ as its cover, but no Rawn to be found in the rest of the mag. Most of the articles didn't interest me in the rest of my subscription, and since I don't really care for short stories (the only ones I've looked for are Misty's [in fact, I just bought Horse Fantastic for "Stolen Silver"]. Though I'm reading _A Knot in the Grain_ by McKinley now [found it in the library]), the mag didn't do much for me. She was incredibly buff in that movie - even gave Schwarznegger a run for his money, IIRC. (I guess that means I will "fourth" the motion?) RE: Mental Illness in Valdemar Wasn't that man in AFlight, the child molester, mentally ill? Certainly evil, but was he insane? One might conclude that Talia's punishment of him was also a very, very, very harsh "treatment." If he sees what he did wrong, and feels remorse, he will recover, if not, too bad! One would think there was treatment of mental illness, though. Certainly Talia, and what was her name, Rynee? - counsel Heralds and other people who are suffering from grief, exhaustion, burnout or depression. RE: Illnesses Let's see: illnesses in Velgarth have included pneumonia, joint-ache, a "brainstorm" (stroke?), probably a cold, anything else? The main characters tend to be healthy... or else get stabbed or something. RE: Misty's future writings So, she's writing more fairy tales? That should be interesting - I wonder what she's going to use? I gather, since the Eagle and the Nightingales resolved the overriding plot line of Bardic Voices, that series will no longer continue? Or did I hear something about another book, one with Ardis, Talysen's cousin, in it? I sure would like to see more of Rune and Talysen! Also, Jennie Talldeer and David Spotted Horse! I gather that the characters from the Fire Rose are not going be used again... pity. Well, I'm not a college student and I'm not going to be one (and I didn't take offense, so calm down everybody :) ), but being a student at a vocational school soon will mean a 2-hour-commute every day. And that, besides renovating my future room and absolutely lousy bus time-tables (and living in an altogether different city eventually) will mean I won't have much time to spend here. Sad but true. ================================================================= Just a thought on the DT novel _Arcanum 101_: IIRC, courses at US-colleges have that system of numbers, don't they? Some time ago, you were asking about your name in Shin'a'in, IIRC. Here we go (btw, I took this all from the appendix in Oathbreakers): Kal'enel = Sword of the Stars Enelve'astre = Star-Eyed So, I think the _enel_ part means star, and not the _astre_ part (as would everybody with a little knowledge in romance languages think ;) ). So Starwolf would be Enel'vyusher, IMO (or Vyusher'enel, if the original means Wolf of the Stars). And here is something that bugged me: If _enedra_ means sister (she'enedra = sister by blood-oathing; jel'enedra = little sister) and _edras_ means brothers (Tale'edras = Hawkbrothers), wouldn't _Kal'enedral_ then mean sword-sisters instead of sword-brothers or sword-children, as Oathbreakers says? If I follow the suggested terms, sword-brothers should be _Kal'edras_ and sword-children _Kal'sedrin_ (like in Tale'sedrin = children of the hawk). But _Kal'enedral_ = sword-sisters is fine with me, just a little compensation for the little bit chauvinistic term Hawk_brothers_ . ;) Walk in beauty Khenta Blaufalk aka Skyfire & Aar Goddess of Incomplete Vocabulary and Garbled Grammar =================================================================== Cole's Law: Thinly sliced cabbage =================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Aug 1996 14:55:30 -0400 From: Raingcats-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: David/Esmeralda Message-ID: <960827145529_466511962-+AT+-emout08.mail.aol.com> David wrote: >Now Shady, how could anybody forget *you*? ("The Healer," "The Stagman," "Touk's House," "Buttercups," and "A Knot in the Grain") According to the blurb, the first four are supposed to take place in Damar (is that a country or a continent? from Hero and the Crown, I gather a country, and it's been too long since I read Blue Sword, but one story mentions the Damarian continent), and the last one is modern, real world. The first two definitely are from Damar, since Luthe makes appearances in them. Numbers 3 and 4 seem like they could fit inside or out of Damar. The main character of the title story, Annabelle (sp?), kind of bugs me. Has she _no_ curiosity? Anyway, in case you want to order it, the ISBN for the book (a hard cover) is 0-688-09201-2. Ok, how about an insect? Like a butterfly (BTW - I read "Wet Wings" in the store the other day. Nice story. Misty writing as it should be.) or something. Or a rat. Something that could be useful, but isn't so cuddly. How about a snake? ============================================================================ > From: Birgit Hanel > IIRC, courses at US-colleges have that system of numbers, don't they? Heck, the entry level computer science majors class is either CSC 005 or CSC 015 (depending on if you had programming before or not). I would love to see a novel about the Spook Squad though. Or maybe it's about when Di was learning from her grandmother. > >From WoFate , p49: > "Kreel's red eyes had begun to fade to pink; Vree's eyes had already > faded to light gray from his adolescent color of ice-blue." > > So, obviously blue eyes can bleach, no matter what RL biology says... > But why red eyes, having no color/pigmentation from the first, should > bleach is beyond me. Or why Vree's eyes are bleaching at all. Isn't ice-blue the color that Misty usually uses to describe bleached eyes? If so, then why would Vree's eyes change?
