Every mage ever born could establish a "line" to the mind of another with whom he had shared magic-but VAnyel had a line to every living Herald in Valdemar by virtue of their being Heralds. When his shields were down, he found himself part of a vast network..." etc. It goes on to describe the pattern. Then, when Kilchas comments on it and asks why no one has seen it before, Van responds with "Probably because unless your gift is very strong, you can't detect it since the link is though the companions. We share magic with the Heralds without the Mage Gift through the Companions." All this is on 632 of the Sci-Fi book club big trilogy set, but I don't have my paperbacks handy to say where it is in the normal book. So, my conclusion from this is that any Herald with a strong enough gift could have seen the web if he'd known where to look. In the passage, it also mentions that this is the first time Vanyel had ever seen the Web, although "He'd suspected this network existed from the glimpses he'd caught when following his line to other Heralds." We know, because Savil tells us in MPawn, that a line is formed to anyone a Herald MAge shares Magic with, and VAn has shared magic with a lot of Heralds, I'm sure, working out on the border. So he would have had opportunities to start suspecting this exists. But he didn't know for sure until they sat down to do their work on the web. The key is all in the companions. They are magical beasts (okay, here I'm extrapolating a bit, but bear with me.) who all have a link to -- share magic with -- their heralds. And they all have a link to each other. So, if you're capable of seeing it, the Web first created by King VAldemar is there for all to see. Hope that answers some questions. The problem is > how did he have this ability before the spell was even cast? Ah.. Hadn't realized that chronology. Still, depending on how early he showed this ability, it could still fit that theory, given that he said he'd been planning and thinking about the spell for some time. Remember, it was a rather massive working, so he probably had been theorising and thinking vaguely about it for some years. On that hypothesis, if he had found the network between companions and their heralds, he may have been following the link to the Herald through the companions. Ie, Van->Yfandes->Herald's_Companion->Herald. If this were the case, it might have been doing that, that actually gave him the idea of creating the Herald network so that it could be, in effect, Van->Herald. Of course, that doesn't explain why other people couldn't trace the links through the Companions - even if it took an Adept's sensitivity, certainly Savil should have been able to, unless she didn't have as strong a bond with Kellan as Van had with Yfandes; or unless Van didn't actually know how he was doing it at first and hence couldn't explain it. I doubt it was anything to do with Van's gifts because Savil also had Mind-Speaking (which would presumably be the gift most likely to combine with Mage-Gift to help track down that network). Either that or Van's Mage-Gift simply was more sensitive than Savil's in certain areas, say, to links and bonds and stuff, which wouldn't surprise me either considering how it was awakened (by a backlash down a shared bond). Summary? I dunno. Take your pick. :) Whew, more Misty stuff, I am on a roll this week. Cheers, Kerry. "Walk on slowly - don't look behind you. "Don't say goodbye, love. Libraries can let you do this, or do it for you. It's called "Fair Use." BUT you can't do it and then sell the copy for profit, or use it in a way that earns you a profit. Libraries can charge you for the cost of the copies (and the expense of having someone do the work involved, costs of maintaining the equipment, etc.), but not make any profit from the deal. So you could copy the T&K stories from books in your library, and someone else could probably do it for you. Making mass numbers of copies and sending them around the list is getting close to a line, though, even if you aren't making money. ---------------------------------- Auntie Undine wrote: >>Terri Windling writes a column called "Folkroots" about fairy tales and she mentions "..._Cinderella_(or "Arne-Thompson tale type 510A," as the folklorists note it)..." I'll try >to remember to look at it tomorrow and verify my info. Yipes! Sorry. But I have to straighten this one out. There are two reference books that you are scrambling. The first is the Aarne-Thompson TALE-TYPE Index. This resource lists little thumbnail sketches of the plots of various folktales, broken down along thematic lines, and gives you places you can find examples, roughly across the Indo-European spectrum (a few other cultures are included, but you usually have to go to supplemental indices for non-IE material). The second is Stith Thompson's MOTIF INDEX OF FOLK LITERATURE, which is a six-volume set of striking details that appear in stories (e.g., "corpse talks from gallows;" "magic cup provides food;" "devil plays cards;" things like that). This index enables you to find some folktales in which these "motifs" occur and/or articles which discuss these motifs (again, there are supplemental indices for many additional cultures by various authors). You should be able to find both resources in the reference section of most major university libraries. Amberdrake's musings kind of explained her background, but not the sudden change in attitude. And, even though a significant amount of time passed between BG and WG, it doesn't really explain how Winterhart went from "parroting rotten orders" to having a backbone and "giving as good as she got" during her "public fight" with Amberdrake in the Heighleigh (sp?) capital.
