That's this part." She [Keth] leaned over the parchment and pointed out the six tiny diagrams encircling the last mage's Name, as he [Jadrek] looked over her shoulder with acute interest she could feel without even seeing his face. "That's just the part that's like a trigger on a physical trap, right?" "Exactly, except that what will activate the trigger *won't* be something the mage does, it'll be something *I* do-a kind of mental twist to release the rest of it." He examined the elaboratly inscribed sheet with care, leaning on the back of Kethry's chair and not touching the page. "That looks familiar enough from my reading-but what's all the rest of this?" "That's something new, something I put together. There's a mind-magic technique that Roald told me about...It involves surrounding someone with an egg-shaped shield that is absolutely reflective on the inside. It's something you do, he told me, when you've got a projective that refuses to lock his Mind-Gift down, or is using it harmfully. Everything he projects after that gets flung back in his face-Roald says it's a pretty effective way of teaching someone when admonishment fails." "I would think so.".... "I thought about it, and it occured to me that there was no reason why the same kind of thing couldn't be applied to magical energy. So I found a spell to make a mirrored shield, and another to shape a shield into an egg-shape, and combined them. That's this bit." She traced the twisted pattens with her finger above the diagram. "When Jiles got here, he agreed to let me throw one on him as a test." "It worked?" "BEtter than either of us had guessed. Scared him white. You see, with most other trap spells, if you have the patience to work your way through it, you can find the keypoint and get yourself loose by cutting it. Not this one--because everything you do reflects back at you. There's only two ways to break this one--from the outside, or to build up such pressure *inside* that the spell can't contain it." ..."What's to keep mages from building up that kind of pressure?" "Nothing--*if they can. But if they try--and if they don't figure out that they're going to have to shield themselves within the shield--they'll fry themselves before they free themselves." There! Now we all know what a mirror egg is and where it came from. Whew! Love, Jaguar ) _,'| _.-''``-...___..--'; /, \'. _..-' , ,--...--''' < \ .`--''' ` /| `-,;' ; ; ; __...--'' __...--_..' .;.' And since most or all of the knowledge about magic was lost resp. unattainable after Van's death, that knowledge disappeared, too, IMO. Well, if you don't believe in working with crystals (not pebbles, as someone wrote, IIRC), maybe it's nothing for you, but I've been there, seen it, done it and I believe that different kind of crystals can kind of channel different kind of energy and that it does have an effect . Don't jump at me for saying that, I think that this kind of discussion (about crystals and New Age in general) would be just as fruitless as one about, oh, religion, for instance. Now why are they doing that? I know this from Germany, where it's done with magazines and periodicals which were not sold at the beginning of the next month, but why with books? They aren't outdated as quickly as magazines, so why destroy them? "They did _that_ to a book?" I doubt anyone would want to bring a dearly beloved pet into what could be a dangerous area. After all, wasn't there something about Heralds regularly getting into trouble on their circuit tours. Even a couple of cases of serious death! But, if the Heralds can manage to take care of their pets, I doubt anyone would mind pets tagging along. ============================================================================ Lady 'Reesa AGAIN! :-D > *grin* I was wondering if anyone would catch that! Hooray!!! I'm not the only one to like Tamora Pierce. Thought Stormwind and me are the only ones who read them so I never brought this series up. Can you believe it? Our libraries here stocked the whole series of Alanna EXCEPT the 2nd book!!!! Argghh! What happened there? I never got hold of it. Everyone, if you haven't read this, try Tamora Pierce. I just finished 'Emperor Mage'. It wasn't that bad. What didn't you like? ============================================================================ Morgana wrote: >OBMisty:.... uhm... okay, If the Compainions are the represevtives, so to >speak, of the gods for Valdemar, the ley'se of the Shan'ian, and >the FireCats for what'sit'sname, anyone have anythoughts on what is going >to be hanging around Ilthel? Besides the Gaurdian, I mean. How about snakes? You know, friendly ones who slither around you until you threaten the Iftel(lians. What do you people of Iftel anyway?) Then the snakes will slither around you more, just fatally tighter, that's all. Wow! My first mail after how many weeks in lurkerdom. Must be getting too hardworking. And two out of three on-topic! They could be pretty wicked fighters, but I haven't really seen them do much. That's not what they're for. I can't remember. ARRGGHH!! I have a book upstairs, let me check...:runs up to check, stops when she remembers halfway.: I know now! Seekers Veritas. I spelled that wrong I think, but I'm not going up again! Hmmm. I don't know about regular pets. They might get in the way. You could have a pet that was telepathic in a book though, but was of no real use. They wouldn't get in the way then! A dog might be possible, but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea. People might be afraid of it or it might give away your position when you try to hide. It would be helpful for hunting though. A ferret might make a nice spy. A mouse would be better. But only if they were telepathic. Otherwise I don't know. I had a character of mine have a telepathic sparrow once. It was basically a pet that could talk. In the second Winds book(can't remember it and I'm reading it...) Darkwind talks about using hummingbirds as messengers. They could be pets almost, because messages are usually attached magically and they just find the person it's for. That's how they got the message to Firesong. No, any normal soul would have surrendered to the Gods long ago, "okay guys, I give in, I'm not hero material, can we stop the game now" sort of thing. I'm trying to write some - not badness, but wickedness into my character, and I just can't get my teeth into it. Last week I had them (they're twins) killing their mother in childbirth - scratched that yesterday, then tried a little pre-natal control, sending afore-mentioned mamma witless - that's not worked, At this rate they're going to be two nice normal little girls, who want to play dolls, help mamma round the house, and never do anything naughty (like Dora (?) in the Ann of Green Gables books - the wicked Davy's sister - nasty little goody- two-shoes). So, as a basically good, nice, caring sort of person, always too prepared to see the other's view point, nice to kids and cats - how do I summon up some nastiness and evil - everytime I re-read something I've written I think "Ach no, that's silly" and delete it all - still, it passes the time I suppose! *+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_ _+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+* Kimberly - weren't you reading College of Magics (C. Stervermer) - it's on my list of books to buy, having read the first chapter on Tor's web site. Is it worth reading? Worth buying? *+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_ _+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+* Lady Thessaly wrote: > I actually saw Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, and I went out of > my mind, and read both the aforementioned, and Pride and Prejudice (which > was FUNNY!) and Jane Eyre (for the umpteenth time on the last one) and I'm > trying Emma, but I don't like it much, yet. Great stuff, I highly recommend > it, Try Persuasion - if you can get hold of the BBC production of a year or two back, see it. It totally brought it alive for me. I took the book on holiday a month or so after seeing it, and savoured it long and carefully. *+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_ _+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+*+_+* I don't know why, but I've somehow got Iftel and Nyissa (spelling - from The Begariad by Eddings) sort of intertwined, so when I think of Iftel I think of steamy swamps and snakes - Lord knows why, it's a fairly recent association, but well set now. Logic tells me Iftel is hot and sandy (again - I have no idea why). Maybe it'll have a strong, independent female, 30/40 something ruler, to make a dinky little grouping with Selenay and Solaris - maybe she could have a name beginning with S .... I bring you SSSSSSelenay, SSSSSSSolaris aaannnnndddd SSSSSSSomethingelse. I think she should have a Mystic-Mutt, a sort of heinz-mongrel as her God given guide, with fleas, that loathes cats - that'd teach Altra a lesson in humility! (This of course, all hangs on ol' Fanny-Adams from Kars or wherever being called Solaris - she is, isn't she??) Right, that, so help you all, was my ObMisty for the day.
