Yes, IIRC they do make an appearance or two in the S&S anthos and in _The Best of MZB's Fantasy Magazine_ (amusing take off on the Lady in the Lake). They also were in a novel which is OP :( ************************ *big snip of an excerpt from "A Different Kind of Courage" by Misty in MZB's antho Free Amazons of Darkover in which I asked if anyone thought it described a proto-lifebond* > what on earth is laran? Hmm...Has anyone ever figured out just what differentiates a lifebond from a lovebond? *********************************************************** > Hmmm. I think I've seen MZB say that Misty was printed in S&S III, but not > that it was Misty's first publishing.... Well this is why I wondered: In the intro to Misty's short story "Satanic Versus" in _The Best of of MZB's Fantasy Magazine_ Vol.2, MZB writes, " Misty is another of "my" writers; I bought her first two short stories for S&SIII and S&SIV..." While in _Free Amazons of Darkover_, MZB writes in the intro to Misty's story, "...she [Misty] has had several stories published in the small semi-pro fantasy magazines..." But never makes a reference to S&SIII. And in the intro to "Sword Sworn" in S&SIII, MZB writes, "I did not know she was also a writer until she sent me a story for _Free Amazons of Darkover_." BTW, has anyone read the stories that were published in the "small semi-pro fantasy magazines" Kimbella was conjecturing:> > But er... lemme take a guess? maybe Misty wrote it before, stuck it in a > completely no-name magazine, and what you have is a reprint? But the Darkover story is copyrighted 1985 which is when the whole antho was published. *wrinkles brow over Misty minutiae* *********************************** Esmeralda with the exquisite taste in books queried: > >Kimberly - weren't you reading College of Magics (C. I don't talk about her, much, but I think she's been changing. I think she's managed to become a little more capable of distinguishing *real* troubles that only Tarma and I can take care of." (p. 88) So, sounds like Need finally got some common sence there. I also noticed when Need was passed to Elspeth, she didn't pull Elspeth out on wild "save the lady!" causes. Granted, she woke up shortly after Elspeth took her, but she didn't pull on Elspeth as much as she did on Kero. Or is that because Kero was so darn subborn and Need hadn't adjusted to her new bearer? I know that this concept was a HUGE part of learning magic in Ursela K. Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle. Everyone had a name until they hit 13 or something, then they picked a usename and a sorcerer picked for them a True Name, which was known only to the person and the sorcerer. You told NO ONE ('cept maybe a wife or someone you trusted) your True Name, for that name was the way to control you. I can't remember the exact concept, I'll have to go back and read Wizard of Earthsea again. >"Anyone could be broken, and no mage had gotten to the Master level without >learning the patience it took to break someone and subvert them." >thought by Quentin, around the time Elspeth shows up and surprises him >somewhat - what with her major mage gift, Gwenna *and* Need. But, my point, >Quentin's thought implies (to me) that it's something every Master has >actually done, including sweet, cuddly, golden-girl Keth (she was a Master >wasn't she?)? No, I think Quentin only ment that you have to have a great deal of patience to reach Master class and above. Think about some of those spells we have seen...they take a great deal of time, and you don't always know if/when they will work. Takes a lot more patients than I, Goddess of the Impatient, have! I don't think its a class at your friendly neighborhood mage school ("Hey, wanna go get lunch?" "Nah, I can't I've got Human Subversion 1A. Can't miss it."), he just means that magery takes patience. Intriguing alternate world where magic works and everyone is born with a daemon which takes the shape of an animal (supposed to be representative of its owner). Second book is supposed to be out before Christmas. And I imagine that's when _The Golden Compass_ will be out in paperback. ***************************************************************** The ever Gracious Lilac Fairy asked about reading Elizabeth Willey. Yes Yes, read _A Well-Favored Man_ (or is that Flavored? *Naughty grin to my High Priestess*) first. I think that then _A Sorcerer and a Gentleman_ will make more sense. Dewar & Josquin *drool* ******************************************* Lady Thess asked about getting anime. Some video stores rent it. I actually found some at a Blockbuster and a local comic shop sells and rents anime tapes. I know that I get a couple of mags like Animerica and Animoto that carry all sorts of ads. ****************************** Kimbella asked why I recommended looking for Firerose in paperback in October if its release date is November. It's because publishers often get books especially paperbacks out sooner than the official release date. I've already started getting books that have October dates. And according to my wholesaler Storm Breaking is still NYR (bookspeak for Not Yet Recieved). I asked and they said the publisher hasn't assigned an official release date. So I imagine that it will be out later this month. Didn't Danya mention that her ARC of it said Sept. 23? ***************************************** And to answer the question about why booksellers don't sell old books to used bookstores (careful, this has a high boredom factor unless you're interested in the book industry!) Have you ever sold books to a used bookstore? They usually offer something like a quarter of the cover price. I get my books at a 40% discount and receive 50% credit when I return them (I lose 10% as a restocking fee :<) So I'd lose money selling to a used bookstore. And unfortunately, I often need the credit from returns to pay my book bills (nothin' like livin' on the edge). And of course there's the time factor. Much easier to strip off covers, sort, count and ship them off than to fill boxes of whole copies and cart them around town to used booksellers. 'though to be honest, it still makes me cringe when I strip books to return them. ********************************************************** Somone mentioned willowbark tea smelling icky. Does it reek the way valerian tea does? My SO kindly refers to my valerian tea as sweatsock broth. A gross but accurate description of the smell and taste I think =) *************************************************** Lady Wildcat (welcome splash), I'm midwesterner. I live close to Cincinnati, OH. Where's Earlham? *************************** And on a totally silly note, my newly annointed High Priestess Jenna and I are looking for a serving boy/girl. Must be able to bake chocolate chip cookies, rub feet and not complain about scrubbing the turtles in my pond *silly grin* 'though if certain someones keep posting one-liners, I may just sentence the guilty parties to turtle scrubbing *evil grin* An adequate incentive to learn how to braid, I do believe. >;) Undine "Why does everyone run towards a blood-curdling scream?" mumbled the Senior Wrangler. --Pterry ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Sep 1996 20:19:12 CDT From: "Hth." Elizabet was a beautifuly made, wooden, hand carved teaspoon , and Kayla was a plastic, mass-produced 1/3 cup spoon. (one is more polished, the other has more potential to hold stuff, but is real rough.) Can you tell that the switch to sleeping at night hasn't quite taken effect yet? I'm babbling more inanities (sp?) than usual. Ye gods and little fishes, I just started the new job yesterday, and the guy who was there before me did lots of book buying and no inventory for TWO years, so guess who's doing it all alone? I think I must be a masochist. Oh, well, at least I can listen to my music by myself, while I try not to read every book I enter into the computer. *********** Jake, I personally started my comic book reading with Elfquest, and I have them all in comic book form through Kings of the Broken Wheel, the third story/series, but when it branched out, I was already reading Sandman, and didn't have the money to continue. Try out the first story line, I can't remember the name of it, but try it, I think you'll like it, it's fun. ********** I can't believe it's my second day on the job and I haven't ordered any books yet. Especially the new Misty! AAARGH, it may be another two weeks before inventory is done enough to learn to order, hari kari is looking....really painful right now. That's my OBMisty for the day.
