But because there is that close -link between the two people - that issues have to be resolved because it is so painful to not resolve it (part of which Stafan tole Nyissa and Skif). I have had 2 major arguments with my identical twin sister in all of our 44 years existence and we had to resolve them because we could not cope with the psychic pain. Lovebond - loves binds us all to a greater and lesser extent - in its most pure form - unconditional love - we may be bound to want the best for the other - their being and their happiness and joy is important to us. What is joy but happiness deeply felt by the soul. But love may go - and does; I don't think a lifebond does. To have both I think would be a challenge and a potential for joy. As for the She-enedra bond - what and how will Kethry cope with Tarma's death when she will live longer than her because she is an Adept. Will Tarma still be linked to her - but as a Leshya (spelling?). Having taken more years of German than I care to think about in college and grad school ;->, I noticed rather early on that almost all the Companions had Teutonic-style names. Misty has used touches of French and British history/traditions and an occasional nod to Irish customs (e.g., Kris's ring), but the core that she constructed her world around is classically Teutonic. And school's ok so far (although I could do without religion and sports classes ;) ). Too bad there are no real RenFaires in Germany, it sure sounds fascinating from what I've heard about it. But there are some feasts and festivals in fall (one of them this weekend, hooray), all with more or less _wine_ in the name, I suppose because the grape gathering is more or less over and the new wine (at some point on its way from grape juice to real wine) can be tasted. I also noticed when Need was passed to Elspeth, she didn't pull Elspeth out on wild "save the lady!" causes. Granted, she woke up shortly after Elspeth took her, but she didn't pull on Elspeth as much as she did on Kero. Or is that because Kero was so darn subborn and Need hadn't adjusted to her new bearer?<<< I hate to say this, but I think that the only "reason" for the change was authorial convenience. Need's premise was a good one while the T&K stories were still in the short-story format, but once they became novels, with long, extended plotlines, Need's tendencies became a liability. The weakness in the plotting of OathBound shows this clearly, since there aren't any real long plots, just a series of short ones. The disjointedness seems to be at least partly due to the fact that Need's geas kept pulling T&K off in random directions. Before Misty could write a really good novel with Need in it, she had to do something about the geas, hence the "change" in Need's personality. Of course, being a good writer, she could elaborate on it, making a virtue of necessity and developing need as a personnage. anyway, that is my $.02. =) Then on Thu, 5 Sep 1996, Catwoman also wrote: BOM>>>Subject: re: "real" names >>>I know that this concept was a HUGE part of learning magic in Ursela K. Everyone had a name until they hit 13 or something, then they picked a usename and a sorcerer picked for them a True Name, which was known only to the person and the sorcerer. You told NO ONE ('cept maybe a wife or someone you trusted) your True Name, for that name was the way to control you. I can't remember the exact concept, I'll have to go back and read Wizard of Earthsea again.<<< Hmmmm. Then there was always Dave Duncan's "A Man of His Word" and the premise that the true names of fairies were words of power and that knowing them made you a sorceror. If I remember, it also killed the fairy, or some such. Besides, the idea of true names has been a part of the tradition of magic in the Western world for some time. I think it has its roots in Kabalah, and in the demonological magics based on Kabalah. Much of the kabalic tradition involved knowing the true names of angels, demons, and (of Course) God. ---EOM On Thu, 5 Sep 1996, Heather the Fierce wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Power of...what? >>>Okay, although I really like the Indigo Girls <<< Heather, Heather, Heather *shaking his head sadly*. You obviously didn't study hard enough. The law only requires you to love the IG if you are either a "Big Ol' Dyke" (LGB Codes Civiles Sec 4, Para 3a) or a "Baby Dyke" (LGB Codes Civiles Sec 4, Para 3b). All other flavors of lesbianism, bisexuality, hetness, or other identity are allowed to like or dislike the IG as they choose. As far as I am concerned, they hit their peak with "Galileo" and that was more of a spike. I like them much better as collabs with other artists (such as Joan Baez, or M-C Carpenter).
