You forgot to mention the name of the book! For those who don't know, the book is called, _Above the Lower Sky_. Cen, which books are part of the David Sullivan series now? On second thought tho, Heather, I think I have to read Cen's recommendation first. Well, only because its due back to the library soon, and I own Swordspoint. BTW - I read Thomas the Rhymer. Yes! That was just soooo nasty and condescending a comment. Something like, "Is someone having her moon-days dear?" I don't blame Elspeth for getting pissed off. Not to bring back the whole pro con Elspeth thing, but I like her in Winds, despite the complete character change from Arrows. Everyone is trying to force her into things without her knowledge or consent. I'd be crabby too. She's also living a life (as Heir) that she _knows_ she's not right for. It's not a postition I'd like to be in. > She (Gwenna) behaved like she was Elspeth's mother, rather than her > chosen companion. Please, don't tease us. Dietz has written a number of books, IIRC, and we'll need to know which this is if we're going to put this O'Connor chap up for inspection. Becky, I really can't give you my Swordspoint Spiel just now, because I've given it too many times on this list. Suffice it to say that Swordspoint is a very good book by the very amazing Ellen Kushner, a lovely little political-intrigue romance between the Too Cool Richard St. Vier and his Boyfriend From Hell (quote stolen from Michael Swanwick), Alec. It just gets better every time I read it. I keep thinking that's impossible, but.... Aztec gods invade Dallas in Burning Water, which is the first of the Diana Tregarde books, the second being Children of the Night, followed by Jinx High. Don't read for the vampires, though; neither the psi vamps nor Andre LeBrel appear in any of the books except CotN. Oh, duh, and I also forgot the other major lesbian character in fantasy, Rali. Lessee, the book is The Warrior's Tale, by Chris Bunch and Alan Cole, and a sequel just came out, called The Warrior's Return. I haven't read either, though I keep meaning to. Almost bought Tale the other day, but I ended up with Sisters in Fantasy II instead. Rali is the sister of the hero in The Far Kingdoms, which I think was pretty popular, and she commands the Maranon City Guard, who are all lesbians (really!) I really will get around to reading that just any time now. If the bond with the Comapnions strengthens the Gift, does a lifebond do the same? Or is it some form of a mage gift that does that? And with Dirk, bespeaking Rolan? But IIRC, they didn't put things together until later, with Elspeth, right? *confused look* ::sigh:: And why is it that the MO "never seems to age"? (p 124) Is that mage energy sustaining him-- so that the MO is (was?) always a mage? p 240 "the tales all claim that the wisdom of the QO knows no age barrier" so is that a personality thing, or is that the MO dong stuff again? ============================================================================= *laugh* Think that's enough for now, but *giggle* don't worry, I'll resurface (even more likely ifthis abyssmal Hurricane Fran thign pelts rain down like the weather people keep on threatening it will.. ) eventuallly. Agreed. What really bugs me about that is how it seems to conflict with the roles of the companions in their Chosens' lives. When Kris & Dirk are fighting in Arrow's Fall Alberich tells Talia that the Companions are supposed to stay out of conflicts between their chosen, which is why Ahrodie and Tantris don't get involved and end the fight. But when Elspeth gets angry with Skif, Gwena sticks her nose in and proceeds to do her best to alienate her chosen. Maybe she's just young & inexperienced, but that sort of got to me, along with the rest of her antics during Winds. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- > On or about Wed, 4 Sep 1996 Spiffy the Cat wailed; > > >Elizabeth wrote: > >>>>"Did I mention that my nose is on fire, and I have 15 wild badgers living > >in my trousers?" > > -Marcus, Babylon 5<<< > > > >AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Well, I'm about to stir the cauldron of my Misty-Lore and see if I can say something startling, provocative, witty, and/or wise. Oh, by the way, Catherine, you've missed the Voyager news. Janeway and *Chakotay,* not Paris, are developing a romantic relationship. In fact, last I heard, Paris wanted to leave the show, and now all the season premiere previews are fussing about one of the cast members not surviving. The house bets on Tom Paris -- and not *just* because I think he's a big, smarmy jackass. (Though I still think Chakotay would make a yummy gay man. Maybe he could be bi. Hell, until they say he's *not,* we can think whatever we like. And I'm not going to say one word about B'Ehlanna. If I did, that word would be illegal under the Telecommunications Act -- in a good way, I mean.) Ah, but back to Misty. Well, I'm very excited about *Queen of Air and Darkness.* I've always like Renaissance history, and I think it's good for Misty's soul to write about characters who aren't all sweetness and light. I positively adore Queen Bess, but she was no Herald. Unless Misty is going to go hog nuts on us and be spaced from the great cargo ship that is reality (oh, God, even I didn't follow that), Elizabeth won't fit the Selenay/Idra/Solaris model of Competent Women in Charge. She was just plain meaner than that, and a lot more devious. I was thinking the other day, and I came to the decision that the problem with Misty's recent works (IMO, natch) is that the only thing that makes her above average as a writer is her character development, and lately character has been taking an obvious backseat to plot in Valdemar. In the books everyone likes, her earlier stuff, there was always ONE (at the very most, two) character that we spent the whole thing with, inside his/her skin, learning how he/she ticked. Talia -- Vanyel -- Kerowyn -- Tarma & Kethry -- Diana. Lately, she's just been bopping around between characters like there's no tomorrow. Who's the main character in Mage Winds? Elspeth, I guess, but she's not even in half the first book. Falconsbane gets as much attention as Elspeth does, and then there's Darkwind who always wants our attention, and Nyara leading her own separate life that has nothing in the world to do with Elspeth, and Firesong shows up at the end to steal the show, and we're always worrying about An'desha. Mage Storms is just as bad. Karal and Firesong and An'desha and aaalll the old characters trying to get a word in edgewise. Gryphons? Same sitch, from what I can see. Even Diana's getting booted out of her own series: Mark and Deke get more screentime than she does in Burning Water & Jinx High, respectively. Only in CotN are we pretty much focused on Diana's problems. There are authors who are very good at large casts of characters. I just don't think Misty is one of them. I think she's better off picking one goshdarn character and writing a book or a trilogy about that character, instead of writing a book about a natural disaster or There And Back Again: A Herald's Journey. Q: What was LHM about? A: It was about Vanyel coping with being a gay Herald with a broken lifebond and a dark fate. Q: What was Arrows about? A: It was about Talia coping with being young and powerful and inexperienced. Q: What was By the Sword about? A: It was about Kerowyn coping with the ups and downs of a mercenary life. Q: What was Mage Winds about? A: It was about a powerful madman threatening Valdemar, and a bunch of Heralds joining with a bunch of Tayledras to save the Vale and thwart the madman and bring magic back to Valdemar. Q: What is Mage Storms about? A: About these storms that are destroying the land, and a bunch of people who go off in search of a way to stop them and save the world. Do you see the difference? And I, at least, liked the first three series much better than the last two. I just think that Misty found her niche as a writer, then abandoned it. Maybe the fairy tale books will get her back on track: they by and large come with a built-in main character. Weeeelll, I've done enough damage here for one evening. I'll save further ramblings for slow Friday evenings yet to come. HTH r618-+AT+-academic.truman.edu "What was it about that night? Jaguar - I would also love a casting vote form. Sounds like fun to me. Gee, something else to keep me in the computer labs at school . Question - I was wondering if there was any way to learn more about the mercenary's code mentioned in By The Sword or just learn about it as it keeps coming up in stories? It's mainly a curiosity kind of thing but it might be handy to know about... Another question - At the end of BTS, Kero is putting on a white tunic (which I assumed was part of her Whites). I thought that was strange since she had just been chosen. Please inform me if I am completely out of it or what was up with that. Thanks. Enough of the silly questions. I dunno just how interested you are - there was a mercenaries guild type thing in QO for people who wanted to make Marcenary personas. They might have more info if you're *really* interested (I'll get the address and other info if anyone wants). > Another question - At the end of BTS, Kero is putting on a white tunic >(which I assumed was part of her Whites).
