Well, the Guardian and alt uni things aren't really what I liked about the book. I preferred the parts on Betazed. The Guardian is just used for some judicious time travelling, to get rid of the alt uni. To: Subject: Elfquest/artists/copyright/sexpowerdanger Message-ID: <08SEP96.21971064.0059.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> I've never read the Elfquest novel, but I remember an interview with the Pinis talking about how much they enjoyed doing it, because there were so many things you could do with characters internally that just aren't very feasible in a graphic format -- commenting in particular, I think, on the chance to reveal more about Leetah's relationship with Rayek. I'd like to read it someday, but I doubt I'd consider it *better* than Elfquest proper. EQ is both words and art, and without both, it wouldn't be...Elfquest. Without Wendy's art, what you have is irrevocably different, and I think would lack the power that always drew me to EQ. But then, I'm a very visual person. On the topic of great fantasy artists, let's not forget Thomas Canty. Yes, I know he's very in these days, so I look like this total trend-hound poser, but I can't help it. The man is cool. My favorite though, absolutely, is Ruth Thompson, who isn't terribly terribly famous yet, but you see her at a lot of cons and renfests and the like. We have four or five of her pictures in our apartment (okay, accurate count: four, and five if Barbara's father ever breaks down and gives her the one that's been sitting in her parents' living room for over a year.) *Any* woman in a Ruth Thompson picture gets my first vote for Dangerous Lover -- or any kind of lover they want to be, really. She has that touch for drawing sexy women that aren't cheesecakey, and her pictures have such perfect atmosphere, and a sense of grace and strength. Okay, I have no intention of designing a Valdemar RPG, but I just want to rant about how I think it's asinine and generally sickening that you can't do it for your own amusement. Does this strike anyone else as just plain bitchy? I've heard the lawyerschtick a hundred times, This Is Misty's Job, yadda yadda, but I can't see how fanfic has EVER ruined an author. Fanfic is the CORNERSTONE of science fiction fandom, where Misty got her start, may I remind everyone, and without it we probably would not have filk music or mailing lists like this, and Ms. Lackey would probably not have her books on the racks at Wal-Mart. That's what makes this genre different and special -- the accessibility of the authors, and the involvement of the fans. Why the hell can't she be remotely gracious about it? Frankly, I think her work has gone to hell in a handbasked since she went full time, and she needs to go back to waiting tables or whatever job she had before this and spend a little time on a book instead of cranking out six a year, which all read like first drafts of a really good book. I'm sorry. I'm calming down now. I just think it's so cool that people bond with her work and want to be part of it, and she acts so snotty about it. "Well, if you must, but here's a form, and don't do it like *that*." I'd be bouncing-off-the-walls thrilled if a bunch of people wrote me and said "I think Fauklin's so awesome; I'm taking my D&D party through a gate, and what do you think is the minimum constitution to be a Proudman, anyway? What about the Balefire Knights -- fighter-mages or Paladins?" I wish Misty seemed at all appreciative of the compliment involved. But, end of rant. Sorry. I really am, it's just that...well, I have what the guidance counselors in high school called a Problem With Authority. And I guess I just don't understand where she's coming from on this. You write to communicate, to connect with your readers. When they get something special out of that, you should feel good about having done your job, about having shared something with other human beings. And if you move them to do something creative, I think that's pretty amazing. Sure, they can't sell it, but...you can be a *little* understanding. Oh, I shouldn't even really get into my thing about Misty and sex and power. I started to write it out a while ago, and I got to five pages and gave up: I still had the Black Gryphon and the Mage Storm books to cover. But the gist of my essay was that Misty has no powerful men who are also sexual beings. She manages to make each of them sexually unthreatening, to the extent of being either unattractive or uninterested. Even her romantic characters have to be somehow asexual, like Darkwind, who comes from a very erotically-charged society, but never really seems to be a part of it. He's not promiscuous like the other Tayledras, and so he's the one who's really suitable for a relationship with a woman. The only promiscuous male characters allowed are gay: Firesong, Tylendel. Most men in positions of power over women are either nonthreatening sexually, almost emasculated (Randale, Urtho) or bad guys, who, by contrast, *are* presented as sexual (Ma'ar, Ancar, Kethry's husband, the evil king who rapes and murders Idra). The best example I can think of is the shadow-relationship between Vanyel and Leareth. They are these fated antagonists, driven by destiny to face each other down, etc. Leareth even designs himself to look like an inverse of Vanyel, which is pretty obvious symbolism. He's the dark side, the corrupt mirror of Vanyel's honor and purity. Vanyel is, as someone recently mentioned, afraid of sex: afraid of becoming too involved in someone else's life, afraid of breaking someone's heart or not living up to his expectations (the old "it's just hero-worship, he'll hate himself in the morning"), afraid that anyone close to him could suffer physically for it, as a hostage or a weapon. He's so nerve-wracked about the possibilities that this very attractive man spends the vast majority of his life celibate, even when being dogged by the sexy redhead who's practically ripping his clothes off, and who Vanyel just happens to love madly. It's *Leareth* who is sexual, who wants sex. It's the Evil Vanyel who is a carnal creature, with erotic impulses and sexual drives. Message? Bad guys want to get into your pants; heroes avoid that sort of thing as much as possible, because it's just plain trouble. They only get laid if they really, really can't help it, and it helps if they're lifebonded. That's not so bad. Well, anyway, after more than five pages of other examples of this same kind of thing, my conclusion was that Ms. Lackey is not comfortable with sexually aggressive, powerful men. She seems to think that to be a good man, you have to be sexually passive, or just not sexual at all. I don't know, maybe she's had bad luck with sexy men. Maybe her first husband was one, and he treated her badly. Who's to say? But it's such a consistent thing in all her books that I have to think there's some kind of serious emotional issue behind it. Themes that come up again and again pretty much always tell you *something* about how the author looks at life. Of course, I could write a companion essay about her sexual rigidity regarding female characters, who are all pretty uncomfortable with their own sexuality, but I think I'll wait a while on that one. Give me something to look forward to. Go ahead; if you don't believe me, give me any influential male Misty character (all my work has been on the Velgarth books, but I'm sure it applies to the others, too), and I'll show you how he fits into this whole dynamic. I have pages of notes from my research on this. Some of them fit more snugly than others, but they all relate in some way -- and I'd venture to say that just about all of the non-powerful male characters are also non-sexual, because being sexually attractive and aggressive is, in itself, a form of power. Hmm, that may be a companion (no pun intended) essay, too. HTH r618-+AT+-academic.truman.edu "What was it about that night?
