My group entered the Silly Team Competition at EuroGenCon this year, and the scenario was a little piece of insanity called 'Polymorphing Power Paladins' (and I think we can all see where this comes from, can we not?). One portion of the scenario required the construction of a play, with one of three titles. The title we chose was "A Mimic at the Antiques Road Show" Now, for those of you outside the UK, I should explain that the Antiques Road Show is in fact a television show which holds sessions where people can come along and bring that piece of tat that Auntie Sybil left them, and find out whether it's really worth thousands of pounds or whether it really _is_ just a tasteless piece of junk. However, our group decided that the PPPaladins, being American, wouldn't have the first idea about this ... .... so the play wound up being about a mime who attempted to steal old cars. Naturally he had to be named Bippy. Actually this was one of the saner parts of the scenario. Really, read in a certain way, the whole scene could be taken as an emasculation scene. Karal has a sexual response to a powerful woman who then proceeds to exercise her superior strength in a way that makes him "incapable" of responding to her in that way again. -----EOM On Mon, 9 Sep 1996, Ivy wrote: BOM>>>Subject: Re[2]: B5, copyright/kelts/father-figures in misty's books >>>Hmmmm. In fact, I strongly doubt that the percentages of children who suffered MOTOS sexual abuse would be significantly different if you seperated it by gay/lesbian and straight identity. This is one of the common myths that has grown up about homosexuality from the prevailing view of homosexuality as a psychological deviancy: that it is a reaction to some psychological trauma. Given this interpretation, I think that answer is clearly, no, Valdemar could not have battlesteeds, unless they produced their own. His profession is an apology for much of his sexual behavior, along the lines of "it isn't really sex, it is just a job." Actually, though, we do find some strong, sexual males in the MageWar books: the griffons. Skan and Aubry(?) are presented as laudable characters who are undeniably sexual in a positive female-oriented way. And on page 19 of my copy of Oathbound (SFBC V & H) we find the following; "That would be-Valdemar, no?" in the discussion on types of magic. Anyway I'd say that Misty intended the two series to cross as early as 1988! Any earlier dates? David Tiffany, Galled by typos Kleptomaniac, n. This _is_ from the book (WoChange, right at the beginning): "Elspeth being a survivor of one-thousand-and-one court ceremonies in her 26 years of life" (quoting from memory, so don't expect accuracy ;) ). So, regarding your timeline, was she born 2 years earlier or do the MageWinds take place 2 years later? ===================================================================== Jaguar wrote: > I get the idea that Misty didn't really think it all out as a >working society when she created the Shin'a'in. Oh >well...at this rate, all these on-topic posts should more than make up >for that off-topic weather query. :) Uhm, everything the Tayledras need for food grows in the Vales, IMO. And they even have different sections to simulate the different seasons (to give the plants a rest?); I don't remember right now where I got that, but there was a reference to the "fall section" of a Vale, so I suppose there must sections for the other seasons as well. Hmm, maybe in WoFate, possibly the first chapters on Darkwind. But there must be a lot of trade. Where do they get cloth and dye, or books, for that matter? Beads and crystals for their jewelry? I imagine that there is lively trade with the Outland in general via the Shin'a'in and we just haven't heard about it. At least that's what I've figured out, and my Tayledras persona will be seeing a bit of that (eventually, when I get around to write this darn story :) ). Why the big mystery? Is there something I'm missing? Actually, yes- Rolan *made* Talia forget, and I assume Gwena dids the same to Elspeth. In the scene where Talia finds Elspeth in the grove,, and Elspeth tells her Gwena's name, she is puzzled. She knows all the unpaired Companions, and she realized that since there had never been a Gwena among them, that Gwena was GB. Then Rolan Looks at her, with a twinge of regret, and she suddenly "remembers" Gwena as a shy young Companion who had never chosen. She has the feeling that she has forgotten somthing important, but is more occupied with helping Elspeth and forgets her feeling. This occurs in the beginning of AFlight. Remember, Rolan has done this before- when he made her forget that he had chosen her until she learned what the choosing meant. I wonder if all the Companions can mess with their Heralds' heads like this? I say no. The Tayledras are Clans, but they don't get battlesteeds. Neither do k'Leyhsa (although they might have their own. The mage war list is another mailing list that many of us are one. It's sort of a role-playing/group story thing. If you want more info, check out Jaguar's page http://www.sidwell.edu/~rholsen .
