I love Misty stuff but it may be a little heavey for the very young so as an elementary-teacher-who-wants-to-be-a-librarian-when-I-grow-up, I would highly recommend Jane Yolen's children's books!! She has some beautiful fairy tales that are out of the ordinary and she does a wonderful take off on Sleepy Beauty called *Sleeping Ugly*. I haven't read any of her adult stuff but I love the "Kiddie Lit." Congratulations!!! And remember it's NEVER too early to start reading to your littles!!! OBMisty: The name Florian sounds familiar and I've been racking my brain ever since I read SW trying to remember who had a similiar name!!! Maybe it was somebody from the Arrows books? I'm leaning toward Randale, but I think it's probably someone else. Tamara, Queen of PURPLE, and I don't mean that wimpy lavender! A termite knocked on wood Tasted it and found it good. She is one of the wonderful people who helped organize the last dragoncon, and she also knows Andre Norton. She amazingly patient with us Misty fans, and usually answers whatever questions about her she can. If there is any questions you want to ask her, I'll forward them if you want. I cant promise an answer however. Her name is Morgan. Now that I've said all that, I'll tell you what she said about Misty and kids. Seems she was talking to Misty about that very subject once and Misty said something along the lines of "What do I need with Kids? I've got FANS!" And besides, in a way, Misty IS a mother. Sort of. She does take care of all those birds! (to those of you who are on America Online, you'll find Morgan in the fantasy chatroom on Wensday nights. She the one who everyone pounce's on for info! And if you do talk to her, be careful what you say! I might get back to Misty! Trust me! I know!) Sorry about that, starting to ramble.... Kris and Talia spent a good chunk of time in that station in the Forest of Sorrows and Van had very little else to do at that time except keep a supernatural eye on the pair (he says somewhere that he had to stop Yfandes from squitting them). Also Florian has something weird about him that makes him more of an avatar like Dawnfire than a true Companion. Or maybe "avatar" isn't the right word. He's more like what Van is, only he's in a Companion's body (that's why he hasn't Chosen anyone and is so emphatic about Karal NOT being his Chosen). Unfortunately, even in SB Misty doesn't get that specific--at least in the copy I read. My goodness you do come up with the hard ones Heather. (Get your mind out of the gutter. ). Gut reaction re the writing: not illegal & certainly too difficult to enforce & prove. OTOH (hey, gotta keep in practice), copyright doesn't require publishing - using someone else's code in your own program is a breach, as is using a layout/system from someone else's account keeping system. I think the D&D game is probably illegal though in that you are playing with a group (similar to how hiring a video from the local store and watching it with a group of friends is technically illegal). Personally, in theory, and I didn't say this *grin*, as long as you don't publish the writing & don't make the D&D stuff available to other people, I don't think you'd a) ever get prosecuted & b) hurt anyone & c) ever get found out. I actually didn't think Chrome Circle's cover was that bad. I know Shar'mali was supposed to have dark hair, not fair, but I admit I kinda like the cover. Quite a bit actually. The shadowing effect is quite eye-catching as well. And oh-ye-pedantic-cover people, it's called poetic licence. The point of a cover is not to preserve absolute accuracy, it's to make a book enticing and eye-catching. Jodi Lee's LHM covers do that. Wasn't it a James someone-or-other? Help! James H. Schmitz wrote the Telzey series. I'll fish out the books tonight and post the titles tomorrow (I've only go the first two out of the trilogy). The short Telzey story you read in "Tomorrow's Children" (incidentally also where I first read Zenna Henderson) is the first chapter of the first Telzey book (I think it's just self-titled). Zenna Henderson's People stories (short & books) have been collected into one book called "The People Collection". I'll find the ISBN tonight, the book's in print. She did write other stuff but they're not directly related to the People. Of that Tomorrow's Children, my favourite story was the Star one with the brilliant young girl and the young father struggling to keep up with her. Hmm, that may be a companion > (no pun intended) essay, too. She may have been trying to stay away from the bodice-ripper "strong-man, sexually aggressive" stereotypes. There is Andre - females seem to swoon over him (he doesn't do anything for me), but he's not aggressively sexual even if he is intense. And what you said for Kory really holds true for Andre to some extent - he's the quiet subdued type. There's Kris, of course, but his love-life is a bit the worse for wear really. Hmm, on the other side of the fence, there's Dawnfire - unabashedly sexual (see, eg, that pool-scene in Winds between her & Darkwind). Nyara's pretty easy-going with her sexuality (even if Misty had the excuse that it's in Nyara's nature). Oh, and read between the lines on Oathbound - Kethry's no shrinking violet when it comes to the other sex either. -------------------------------------------------------------------- EOM. To be honest, it seemed fairly reasonable to me. You take a young man who's grown up cloistered with little [physical or otherwise] contact with the opposite sex; and you throw him into close contact with an attractive woman - of course he's going to get a reaction -and- he's going to be embarassed. Then she demonstrates alarming and intimidating capability and physical prowess; and it's natural that a) he'll be put off & b) he'll subconsciously take the opportunity to mentally put her in the "unavailable & not attractive" category, to avoid embarassing himself again. Note that if he'd been more confident himself in his own sexuality (or even in his own weapons prowess), item "a)" above might not apply and he might be more attracted to her instead of offput. That part of Misty's writing actually seemed rather a reasonable bit of pop-psychology to me. (The other way of doing it would have been if Karal was more trained with weapons and to have his way of dealing with a woman beating him was to not think of her as a woman and hence not being attracted to her). -------------------------------------------------------------------- EOM. Sorry. I think I wrote Medren, I actually meant Mealk/Malk/Milk/Millik - y'know, his brother, Medren's daddy. But I must admit, I was clutching a straws, I couldn't actually think of a straightforward, sexy fella who was content with his lot, not pining for the one-and-only, fond of a bit of rumpy-pumpy, and uncomplicated. Skif started out Ok, then got totally emasculated by Elspeth in the first Winds. I then thought he was going to discover his other half when he was out and about with Dark-doodit's brother (Wintermoon???), and go gay, but I suppose he ended up sort of ok, in a 'normal' caring relationship. (I just re-read that - I am *NOT* saying that he was ended up ok *because* he stayed hetero, and didn't go gay - heaven forbid and forfend, I meant he ............ ach, you know!) As to father figures - the one that stands out in my mind as a lovely father is the one from Tigana, who has the 3 (4?) girls, sails whips (oops, freudian typo there - I shall leave it as a tribute to ***HIM***) - I mean ships - Rodriguez????? He was a wonderful creation. Raederle's father in the Riddle Master of Hed - he was a loving Dad 'n'all. There's more I'm sure. My Dad, just for the record, was a lovely Dad - filled me with his love and pride, then waved me off into the world. Now, what about mothers? Now Dirk had caring parents, I suppose Selenay was a good mother, but only after Talia had sorted out her early cock-ups (or cocks-up as a swiss friend of mine insists on saying), Talia's mother was dead (??) stepmother a right cow. Who had a caring, supportive, loving Mamma in Valdemar (Hydona was probably pretty good)? I haven't read Silver Griffon yet - you lot have put me off, so I'll wait for a cheapo paperback - I believe there's some parenting in that. I suppose loving, caring, supportive parents tend to raise happy, together children who are content with their lives and their place in the world. They don't go off joining merc troops, or swearing blood oaths - they aren't the stuff exciting books are written of. And (eek, starting with an 'and', may my english teacher forgive me), people who flit from relationship to relationship tend to leave a trail of sadness behind them, and are not, in my experience, particularly happy people themselves. Again, not the stuff of heroes and heroines. I may well be wrong of course, not likely, but I suppose it's possible, :>. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+ Raindancer wondered: > This occurs in the beginning of AFlight. But ourlast winter never really got cold, I didn't have to use a jacket all year. (Yes, it *does* get cold in CA :) or at least it feels like it to us. But summer didn't come until late, and the weather is just all screwed up. I don't know why, does it maybe have something to do with the ozone layer or something? Well, I don't know any of the details, but a while back, someone was stalking Misty (no, not shadows. ). I think that it was mostly at cons, so she stopped going to them. According to the interview on Baen's web site, that's where she got the evil apprentice guy in Fire Rose from too. ============================================================================= > From: Kerry Mealing > Mat (I think. I don't remember reading anything about this specifically in relation to Misty, but Heaven knows enough famous people have a problem with this that they really can't socialize with the rest of us simply for their own safety. Feudal society normally means patriarchal despite the female >monarch, Queen's Own etc. Patriachy does not engender (and I use the term >deliberately) unconditional caring - does anything? > Patriarchal in theory, but not necessarily in practice. Medieval records are littered with examples of women in armor, leading troops, fighting, or defending their castles (in one case a woman fired a crossbow at her own father and commanded her guards against him because he got the bright idea to try and storm her castle while her husband was away on a mission for the king--the woman's father!). There was a rather large group of women that attended and competed in tourneys during the Robin Hood period. Strong women can be found throughout medieval literature as well (often with comments from the author that "Well, that's just how women behaved in 'those days,' but proper women don't do that sort of thing any more"--the heck they didn't!). So Misty's blurring of distinctions between male and female roles in Valdemar is really not all that modern of a phenomenon. > Danya ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Sep 1996 07:36:28 -0700 From: "Linda Malcor, Ph.D" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Fathers/Mothers/ Message-ID: <199609111436.HAA12496-+AT+-latimes.com> At 01:55 PM 9/11/96 +0100, dbackhau-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl wrote: >I suppose loving, caring, supportive parents tend to raise happy, together >children who are content with their lives and their place in the world.
