But the pace and tone of the story is quite dreamy and mystical, not to everyone's taste. If you ever read the Lloyd Alexander books, there's some of the same source material (Grugach = Gurgi, etc.). It's a sort of Celtic-dawn-era world with magick and elven-types, heavy emphasis on love-relationships and parent-child relationships. And I DO like Cherryh! Her good stuff, that is! Well, AFAIK, grove-born Companions manifest or are born on the night of the choosing, and 'Fandes didn't. IIRC, she was living in the Grove and had two kids. Didn't Savil or someone else make a comment along the lines "the only adult unchosen Companion in the Grove has chosen him?" Rimrunner is an absolute favourite of mine, although actually I don't like dystopian novels (and her attitude towards female sexuality in this book _is_ dystopian, IMO). Her characterizations are just brilliant, as is her ability to make you look through the character's eyes and live in the character's body. Her "aliens" really _are_ alien, without a trace of human-like behaviour; that's what makes them real for me (and what gets me annoyed with most of the StarTrek aliens). Though I don't know why it is that some books just don't grab me (Goblin Mirror, for instance). Hmm, now that I think about it, it was her fantasy that I couldn't get into (GM, Paladin). You guys would have to go and drag up a bad reading experience. It's a basic story of the aftermath of the Light vs Dark war, with one tribe of Orcs gaining a magical advantage (Modern military weapons and training), though the Light wins again, this tribe (Or company) manages to hold it's own. It does have some good lines but on the whole the writing was rather weak. As Khenta said, ungripping (and boring, lengthy, and uninteresting.) In fact the only reason I finished the bloody thing was the hope that it would miraculously turn around and get marginally better (It didn't, but by the time I resigned myself to that fact, I was more than halfway through.) It's also the only book I ever _gave_ away. From what I gather, a Companion's bond to her Herald is stronger than a Herald's bond to her Companion. Companions seem custom-designed to need nothing more than their Chosen. Their purpose for being on the planet at this time is to help and uphold their Heralds, which is why they never seem to form bonds outside the Companion-Herald relationship. They have friends, but you never hear about Companions falling in love, or lifebonding, or getting married. Because Companions aren't exactly autonomous beings anymore. They're the Heralds' support system. Sooo, I would say the strength and primacy of the Companion-Chosen bond would keep the Companion from total despair while temporarily separated from his lifebonded. Of course, Florian hasn't Chosen yet. But then, from Danya's comments, it sounds like we learn in SBreaking that he's not Mardic, but something "different" and sort of avatar-like. Yfandes explains it briefly, grimly, to Stefan on that wild mad dash at the end of MPrice. I haven't read MPrice recently (a friend has it) but I don't remember any implication that it was an ability all Companions have - I got the impression that it was something Yfandes could do. And if you check out the timing - she did, in a candle-mark or so, what is said to have taken 2-3 days of hard riding. Even node-boosted, I don't think normal companions have that speed. And besides when Companion travel is described normally, it's just described as moving very fast - when Yfandes did the ride, she was moving verry fast -and- every so often, would jump and lurch in mid-air - ie would fetch every so often. That's the only place that type of lurching is described in Companion riding. > >Ghost (Tashir's Companion) is evidence that some Companions do get gifts > >that others don't (he was "something of a Mind-Healer"). That's the only place that type of lurching is described > in Companion riding. Another argument against the Fetching thing for all Companions is Altra. He says that Jumping is an ability that Companions don't have. Yfandes, though, might have had the Fetching Gift, and how to move herself with it, like Dirk read about. BTW - when in SW does Altra Jump with Karal? I was looking for it last time I read Storms, but I couldn't find it, except in Karal's reference to being sick "last time" at the end of SR (the going to Tremane scene). But then again, I had my own reasons for that that weren't REALLY book-related. I tried those Hell books (the collabs...) and they were drab. And Hellburner, a SciFi, it was bleah. Haven't tried the Merovignen (sp) Nights yet, but I'm told that was pretty good. Miss Cherryh is on Compuserve all the time, and, while she doesn't respond to Yells or Personal Messages (IM's for you.. *shudder* AOL'ers) she seems like a nice person. ////// Barbara wrote: >If Florian is Mardic, then where is Donni? Just a semantic question, here. Don't the reincarnated Companions have the similar name thing going on? Savil / Sayvil (sp) et al? Wouldn't Misty parallel that in the rest of her books? So, if Mardic came back, he'd have a twisty name like.. oh, I don't know, Medrek or something, right? Oh yes, he definitely has much cuter nevermind ;) Yummy! Anyone here seen Gallipoli (I know I'm spelling that wrong, but it's something liek that) It's about the battle of Gallipoli, and he is absolutely great in that movie. If I remember correctly, it takes place in Austraila, and unfortunately, I think he dies in the end ;'( But that last time I saw that movie I thought he would have made a great Skif, but of course, he won't now, much too old. Anyone here seen Braveheart? I haven't, but from I've seen in the previews, Mel looks like he can pull off a pretty convincing warrior guy, so I think he would be good for Alberich. Actually, the other day, someone was saying something about Braveheart, and for the first part of the conversation, I thought we were talking Care Bears. Oops. Then I caught on. You know what else Mel Gibson reminds me of....Macbeth. I think he would make a great Macbeth (you'll never guess what Sahespeare play we're reading in English now, go ahead and try. ;)) I'm in a really talkative mood right now, I'll shut up now... Okay, you lost me here, I know who Tantris is (Kris's Companion, probably Tantras as a Herald) But who is Dantris? I don't ever re call reading anything about him. Is he in SR?
