It occurred during WW1 and the ANZAC (Australian & New Zealand Armed Corps) were sent to the Gallipoli Peninsula to fight the Turks (allies of Germany) and in the 8 months of fighting - 33,000 allied and 87,000 Turkish troops perished - in a campaign which was a failure. 8,700 Aussies dead and 19,000 wounded. Yet now we (Aussies per se)see it in the words of the official historian, CEW Bean "for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship and endurance" It is considered to be the essence of Australian (male) mateship. These men came home heroes, we fought the same sort of war in Vietnam and our men were treated like S**T. Personally, my father was a very kind and gentle man. My MOTHER, however, is a different story! Child abuse is far more common than anyone would want to believe. Unfortunately, alot of people still think "it cant happen to me or anyone that I know." Whats even worse is that the people who seem to think it cant happen to them are often the one's its happening to! And since so many believe it cant happen to those they know, alot of people turn a blind eye when it does happen! Sad, but true. At least Misty's books open peoples eyes to "Its not a nice universe, child!". We can thank heavens Misty isnt turning a blind eye to it! Your also right about abused children diving into fantasy books for escape. When the world around you is a real nightmare, your far more inclined to read about "someplace far away from here where life is only a nightmare occastionlly." Its called "survival tactics". I suppose reading is a far better escape from such things than other "escapes" I can think of! Being addicted to books isn't usually bad for your health! So let us be grateful for Misty. Its just possible that one of those escaping kids might identify with those characters, realize whats going on around them really is abuse, and maybe they will get help! For that alone, I'll read about Misty's abused characters without a problem. Her works are performing REAL Heraldic acts. Mainly, giving those kids a place to hide, and on giving them advice on how to save their minds and lives! ....Julie ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Sep 1996 11:16:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Le destin des fees To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Nooooooooooo! At least Misty's books open peoples eyes to "Its not a nice universe, >child!". We can thank heavens Misty isnt turning a blind eye to it! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Heyla! When I was growing up, there was a lot of child abuse in our neighbourhood. The guy next door used to use his daughter as a punching bag regularly, and the kids across the street were whipped across the wrists with willow switches. This kind of abuse went on in nearly every house on our street (including mine). We didn't know we were abused because everyone we knew was treated the same way. When we finally found out what child abuse was (high school), we still didn't say anything - we had been taught not to talk about what happened at home, and we were afraid of how much worse it would become if we talked and our parents found out about it. Abused children often grow up to be abusers themselves. My parents were abused children, who grew up to abuse their children, and who knows how far back the line of abuse stretched? My sister and I decided as children that our children would grow up with encouragement and love rather than scorn and humiliation. What Misty's books do IMO is to open the eyes of abused children to a life that isn't filled with pain and fear. She writes of escaping the abuse, and in doing so, she gives hope to those who had no hope. Sorry for ranting, this issue is very important to me. Yeah, Gallipoli- you did spell it right- is a good movie, about the Australian soldiers fighting at Gallipoli, Turkey in WW1. They were used by the British commanders sorta like Ancar used his soldiers- just keep throwing them at a hopeless goal, using up lives & hoping maybe one or two will make it through to the other line. Mel doesn't die, but his best friend does- the one who tries to run faster than a leopard (or was it Cheetah?) Anyway, it's horribly depressing, but a wonderful movie... Anyone here seen Braveheart? I haven't, but from I've seen in the > previews, Mel looks like he can pull off a pretty convincing warrior guy, > so I think he would be good for Alberich. I think he would make a great Macbeth (you'll > never guess what Sahespeare play we're reading in English now, go ahead > and try. ;)) > I'm in a really talkative mood right now, I'll shut up now... Braveheart was good. Long, melodramatic, and gory, but good nonetheless. And Mel did star in a version of Hamlet that you can get on video- that was pretty good too. (Now boys&girls, try to guess who's a Shakespeare fan...) > Just out of curiosity, is anyone else fond of the cartoon series "Gargoyles"? Puck is the *best*- Brent Spiner does such a wonderful job voicing him... and Marina Sirtis & Jonathan Frakes are great too. Yet. ;) I did look at the ending (I'm only half-way) and I certainly hope Misty intends to tie up her loose ends. More waiting. Ack! SR and Tiger Burning Bright both come out in paperback today. And Misty has a contribution in a cookbook called Serve It Forth. It's a collection of recipes from SF/F writers with the profits going to charity. Diane Duane's contribution is amusing in a Monty Python-esque way. If there are any Griffin & Sabine fans out there, Nick Bantock's latest creation, The Venetian's Wife just came out. Looks like this time the correspondence is via email. Looks like an intriguing story but I miss the postcards.
