Why would Misty do something like that? Um, authorial mistake? Or the fact that Florian is something a bit beyond your average Companion (e.g., Rolan's name doesn't sound like the names of other QO's Companions, but we're pretty sure the same spirit is being recycled there)? Florian's Latin and almost every other Companion name is Teutonic (with extremely rare exceptions--usually for "special" Companions, like Gwena, whose name is Celtic). I honestly don't think it's possible to say anything at all about a book (new or old) without SOMEONE considering the post to be a "spoiler". If the topic is worth discussing, the information is bound to "betray plot twists or new information about ongoing characters." So, why not just delete everything that gives the title of a book you have not read or save it to a file to read after you've read the book? Otherwise forbid everyone on the list to say anything about any book until everyone on the list--including anyone new who joins--has read it, which seems a bit unrealistic. Danya, common policy, and strict rule here is that, until a book is 6 months old (by which time it should be possible for everyone to SOMEHOW read it with enough effort expended) , all revealing things about it should be labeled Spoiler!. If it comes in the middle of a post, then put lotsa lines before it, or even if it's at the beginning. I think maybe we're not communicating real well about what it is I find disturbing. I find it hard to pin down exactly. Maybe an example would help. On a news-list regarding mysteries there is a reviewer that details much of the plot, and talks about all of the characters and how they react to each other and to new characters, what effect various happenings have and how the ending ties into all of these. The result is that, if the stories are about continuing characters, there is no sense of newness and surprise about reading the book. When you review a book, as I'm sure you are aware since you are working from an advace copy, the object is to say enough about a book so that someone, especially someone that is familiar with your likes and dislikes, can decide if they want to buy/read the book themselves. When you spell out large chunks of the book, especially one not yet published, and keep adding to them over a period of time, I believe it isn't fair to the author or to the prospective readers since too much advance information a change the impact of the book. That is why I said that this information should be labeled, since all discussion of a forthcoming book and mention of it in a subject doesn't result in this type of result. A thread completely about SBreaking, yes, that you can mark out, and probably should. But let's take as a relevant example the Florian thread. Our conversation is based a lot around quotes from SBreaking. So should all of the Florian stuff be labeled Spoiler, since it does shed light on something that we learn in SBreaking? Should we just forget the whole thing until March? It seems like some SBreaking info is going to sneak in if we want to continue having conversations about Valdemar based on all the extant evidence to date. Personally, it doesn't bother me. But then, I was regaled with the entire plot of both the Heralds trilogy and LHM one afternoon at Burger King , and I went on to actually read them and adore them. I even e-mailed Danya privately a few days ago and shamelessly begged to find out what becomes of Firesong -- a question that has been bugging the hell out of me ever since I finished SRising. Guess I'm just not good with suspense. And speaking of Florian I would really like for him to be Tylendel, who was just awfully neat. Now I don't have a clue how the metaphysics of that would work, but...Tylendel was neat. (Tylendel/Stefan in '96 -- He's Just a Heartbeat Away from His Own Presidency. Don't worry, listmates. That didn't even make sense to me.) What does Florian have in common with Bob Dole? NEITHER will ever be President of the United States. And we don't know who Bob's supposed to be, either. Well, my guess is that they had to go somewhere that was time dependent. So they probably did not go to the Havens. Maybe they are being reincarnated again, but that would probably drive me nuts waiting for them to grow up and worrying about whether or not they would find each other again. The third choice people are usually given is to become avatars or something like avatars, which they might have done then had an immediate assignment. I do think I'm going to scream, though, if in the next book we meet Companions named Danyel or Vaniel and Steven or Stephan and a new Herald who matches Yfandes's description! >Since there aren't any large >reserves of magic does that mean that Heartstones don't work anymore? My editors jump all over me if I try something like that! >Am I the only one to feel that this was just a minimal >effort to finish off a trilogy 'cause that's what her contract called for? The work feels padded, and the end feels like a summation of notes. All that adds up to simply bad writing. Sheesh! I want to follow Silverfox and Firesong to their new home! I want to follow Karal to Iftel! I want Darkwind and Elspeth to do something besides chase each other down a couple of hallways (I don't think I've read so completely flat of a description of two such dynamic characters in my life!)! >Misty has certainly managed to pose more questions than she answered. >Almost like SB is the 3rd book in an ongoing series not the final book of >a trilogy. I agree. There sure as heck better be another book in the series out there, but I doubt it when SB is being billed as "the final book in the trilogy." And even if there were another book, we'd have to wait a year or better for it to come out. Argh! At least I now don't have to delete SB spoilers that I saved by mistake! It looks like I won't be able to read SB till Christmas cos the local bookshops say mid October for arrival, which means mid to late November before the library finishes putting it on their computer *many sobs* (I'm another poor soul who can't afford hardbacks) Sorry about the complaining! Definitely a lot of Trek alumni on that show - they've also had the WorfMeister in as the voice of Coldstone. Have you discovered the 'Beast Wars:Transformers' yet? I think I heard Frakes in on that one, but am not sure yet. Didn't get to see the voice credits.
