Still, it would have to be an extreme case to ever justify using blood magic,
when there should be better sources available.

Really? Where was that stated? I don't remember reading a passage like 
that. All I can remember is that Darkwind didn't use his Mage-gift for quite 
some time without losing it. He just lost the _skill_ to use it. So, as an 
analogy, I think it's like... riding a bicycle :). You'll never forget 
how to do that. Maybe you're a bit shaky, but you actually able to move 
forward.

This quote immediately sprang to my mind, but I can't for the life of me

I really don't know about that one - Blood Magic is supposed to use 
torture and the inflicted pain to produce the energy. Preferably from an 
non-consenting victim <dunno if that's from Misty or just a figment of my 
imagination>? What if you get a consenting victim (Blood Magic + S/M)? 
But the very thought of that makes me uneasy, makes my skin crawl. 
Using Blood Magic even to Heal sustains BM as such, and that's, IMO, not 
a very settling thought.

animals or people that  were dying around you?  Remember in Oathbound...the
demon (who's name I'm not going to try to spell!)  uses the pain and deaths
of animals at a slaughter house to augment his power...would it have been
evil for Keth to do the same.  Or how about people dying on a battlefield?

Lame Obmisty: the Lilac Fairy is currently re-reading LHM, and she's looking
out for someone who matches the mystery-Herald who may now be Florian. Do
keep on with the spoilers! SB hasn't made an appearance in the Lilac Fairy's
area yet and she LOVES spoilers! 

By the way, to those who are in Northern California: the Lilac Fairy will be
at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Novato on Sun. Sept. 29. If anyone else
is going to be there that day, let her know and we can try to get together!

The Lilac Fairy retires to the Bower to drift back into the arms of Morpheus.

IMO, any mage that wants to use the power would be walking a _very_ thin
line. Sure, they could use it for the better of the world and all, but
what if they get it from enemies who are dying or in pain? AFAIK, the only
time this happened was when the priest in Oathbound changed that demon
into a girl by using the death(?) and free magic energy that had filled
the room. Would that be good using evil in order to defeat evil, or evil
just getting what they deserved?

I agree with those who can't buy SB yet.  Due to a change in address 
five months ago I haven't been able to buy paperbacks, nevermind 
Hardcovers.  Why most all the good books be hardcovers.  Even

I still think that would be evil..after all, while the victims are not being
killed by the mage, his/her using the blood energies would be wrong.  The
victims are not consenting to have what's left of their energies leeched
away.  And,IMHO, the very term "blood magic" implies something sinister.
Not my best argument to date, but a lack of sleep will do that to you.

Oh, good that sounds interesting.  BTW - I remember hearing it speculated

Well, the planning was going on, and you dissapeared from the list.
Besides, the point wasn't for you and Cennydd to like each other.  It was
a scam to hit on the ushers and bridesmades, remember? <g>  And hey, my
brother's best friend just had a spontaneous wedding.  Went to Arizona
with his girlfriend, and when they came back, they were married.  Of
course, her parents don't know yet.  Not until they get an apartment
anyway. :)

  I'm not sure.  I don't think so,  as long as you weren't killing them.
 Didn't Kethry use people's anger to fuel herself?  If so,  I think that if
you're in a war and using the energy of the dying people,  it's okay if you
use it for a good spell.  Like Healing a wounded person,  not blowing up more
of the enemy.

Funny, you named the two tracks on the album that I always skip over.  The
first song, "Open", was okay the first time, but it began to get on my
nerves after a while.  You're right, it does sound like silverware, tho.
"Thinking Out Loud" annoys me in a "Herald's Creed"-like way.  The tune
and how Meg Davis sings this one just grates on my nerves.  It's one of
those songs that I feel embarrased for other people to hear.  Ick.

Yes, he is.  In fact, he is apparently one of the many people who was 
able to come to terms with his sexuality after reading LHM.  He and 
Misty became good friends, and she helped him work through his 
problems and get out of his marriage, etc.  And now he lives with her 
and Larry and the birds.

  It's from _Muppet Treasure Island_  which I just saw this week.  The
starfish are in Gonzo's pants actually.  The next line is,  "You and your
hobbies."  <g>  I heard it and had to use it.

Hmm, hard one. I haven't heard Life's Flame yet, so I can't say about
that.  BTW - Jake, how is it?  And which version of "The Garden" sounds
better, that one, or on HA...Live!  ?   Of Wanderlust and HA...Live!, I'd
have to say that I prefer the live one.  Not that I don't absolutely love
Wanderlust (I wouldn't  be a Heathen-to-be if I didn't :) ), but I like
hearing her live.  That's part of why I can't wait to hear Life's Flame.

In addition to the anthologies already mentioned, she also had stories in
some of the Darkover anthologies.  IIRC, her main character was a Renunciate
named Tayksa (sp?). Unfortunately I didn't hold on to most of these books
after reading them.

I seem to remeber a convesation between Keth and Tarma about Blood magic.
It seems that the Shamans use blood magic, usually their own blood, to use
the power to get the Star-eyed's attention. (Remember the shamans who
committed suicide to restore the plains?) That certainly wasn't evil, or
the goddess wouldn't have responded (at least not possitively!). I beleive
in that same conversation, Keth said that White Winds doesnt USUALLY use
blood magic, but will use it if it necessary. The constraints of the school
said that they can't "create" it themselves, but if its already "around",
it can be used, such as on a battlefield. As long as she didnt cause it. I
think it depends on the mage who's doing it and what for. I also think that
STarwind and Moondance used it for Savil's talisman. The saying "If its
evil and done in the name of good, its still evil and if its good in the
name of evil, its still good" applies here.

I would definitely say the live tape, without hesitation.  I liked
Wanderlust; there were some pretty songs ("Stolen Child," "Wanderlust")
and some fun ones (notably "Pour Your Brother," one of the first songs
she ever wrote, a RenFaire drinking song).  But I really love the live
tape; she's great on the traditional songs.
   That is, yes, she's an excellent songwriter, and I like her originals
("Flesh Against the Thorn," "The Garden," the one about war whose name I
can't remember), but she has several traditional folk songs on that tape
that I just *adore* -- "Bedlam Boys," "As I Went Roving," "Twa Corbies,"
"The Blacksmith" (loooove that one), and "Heather on the Moor." There's
even a version of that one called "Heather on the Phone" -- it was her
answering machine message for a while.  So, there, I've just come up
with seven songs off the top of my head, all from the live tape, all
terrific.
   Live.  Unquestionably.

In the timeline at the beginning....why is it that allll of the books are
under "Reign of Selenay"? I mean, all the Mage Wars and Mage Storms have
Daren in them, so shouldn't it say "Reign of Co-consorts Selenay and Daren"?
They are co-consorts from what I gather...

Are you talking about the Anita Blake mystery _Guilty Pleasures_? I know for
a fact that isn't Misty, and its not quite her writing style, its so short
and written in first person, while Misty seems more comfortable in third.

Lots of people have been saying lots of things about Blood Magic. (Too much 
trouble to snip it all!)
Just a thought, don't the Shin'a'in shamans use it from time to time? Far as I 
remember it's a last resort sort of thing, like the sacrifice to get the 
Plains livable after the Mage War (somewhere in Winds set, me-+AT+-work, 
books-+AT+-home), or during a _really_ bad drought. OK so it's their own blood, but 
it's still blood magic...
