RE: Blood Magic I thought part of the whole blood-path mage thing was that the victims could not be willing - the mage would "feed" off of their pain and rage and fear as much as off of their blood, like Thalkarsh in Oathbreakers. I think Kethry was also only drawing off those who were willing - they were all angry, they were all focused on a common cause. RE: Sex Magic IIRC, Ancar was differentiating between those girls who were virgins - i.e. they wore a different color collar? - in WoF. Misty leaves it up to our imagination, but, given Ancar's tastes, I always thought that he raped the girls before he killed them. Of course, Sex Magic is a big deal in The Fire Rose. RE: Idry/Idra/Florian I thought that Idry was Idra (of Idra's Sunhawks) reincarnated - so, what I am wondering, didn't Idra have a nice brother? I know she had an evil one, who got oathbreaking called on him, but didn't she have a nice one., too? If so, couldn't *he* be Florian? Anyway, I must go back to work. Bright blessings on you all. Speaking of that, is the one > trusted friend postition really necessary when the Monarch has a > lifebonded? And is Talia MO to Daren too? Good question! OK, I was around for the discussion a few months back about Daren and Selenay and whether they were equals in rule or not. In Valdemaran law, they're co-consorts and equals, right? But I would say that in the eyes of the people and in matters such as these, Selenay would still take precedence. After all, she's the child and heir of the last King, and Daren is a ruler-by-marriage. Plus, Daren is from a different country, and, Chosen though he be, I would venture to guess that the general feeling is that Selenay is the Ruler. And is Daren called the King of Valdemar, or is he referred to as a Prince still? I'm just not sure (me-+AT+-school, books-+AT+-home). So now that I've babbled on and on about piddly little background points that nobody probably cares about, let me get to what I was going to say. I would say, given what I've said above, Talia is still Selenay's Monarch's Own Herald, and not Daren's. If Selenay is really doing the ruling here (And I think Misty is telling us she does), then Talia would be advising Selenay, still. And I think that Talia is still needed, because she offers a more objective opinion than Daren could--since he's tied up in Selenay's lifebond and all. He'd be more inclined to advise Selenay to do what was good for *her*, rather than what was good for Valdemar. I'm not saying Daren is being selfish or anything, just that this is probably where his tendencies would run to. Talia would be more likely to give Selenay a good kick when she needed it. IMHO, I think Daren may have chosen consort status ( or maybe he had no choice) because Selenay's first husband & his brother tried to kill her. Maybe he wanted to prevent any rumors that he was like his late, unlamented sibling. Elspeth gave a similar reason for abdicating in WoF. As for Talia, I agree that she has a more unbiased POV than Daren. And the MO's job is to be the one person the monarch can trust under all circumstances (regardless if the ruler is lifebonded or not). And, remember that the MO has to know just the right thing to say to the queen (Companion's influence?), as Talia demonstrated in AotQ. And I agree that Talia would take Selenay & Daren down a notch or two if it was called for. The term co-consort IMO implies that the co-ruler has an equal claim on the throne, i.e. was born with that claim (supposed they are of different gender, do co-rulers necessarily have to be married?), not that the person married into the dynasty. Speaking of that, is the one >trusted friend postition really necessary when the Monarch has a >lifebonded? And is Talia MO to Daren too? Duh, Winds, Wars whatever. :) Well, Daren *did* sit on the Allience council (or whatever it was called) in SR, in Selenay's place, and it sounded like to me, in all the other books, that he *was* a true co-consort. Because, it states in Valdemarian law that in order to be the reigning monarch, you have to be Chosen, and 1)Daren was Chosen, 2)he married Selenay, 3)they have kids who are in line to the throne since Elspeth abdicated. He sure seems to be her equal, we just don't see as much of him, probably because we're all so used to Selenay. Yes, I think Talia is MO to Daren also, if he is considered a Co-Consort. Her title is Monarch's Own, so why not both? I think that in the case of the Monarch having a lifebonded, however, she takes a position of advisor instead of "one trusted friend in Court." As to the splitting of the books thing, that's what Misty did with LHM. _Magic's Pawn_ is listed under Elspeth the Peacemaker, and the other two are listed under Randale. Really, all she had to do was put all the Winds and Storms under "Reign of Co-Consorts Selenay and Daren." They weren't officially married until after BTS. Confuzzling. Also, the picture of Florian and Altra at the beginning makes me sick! Florian looks toooo much like a regular horse for my taste. I like Jody Lee's picture on the cover, but with all those circle patterns around his head and Karal's, it looks like a take off of those angel pictures that are so popular now. ('cept for inbreeding, but that's beside the point and I don't think they do that in Valdemar.) >From what I can gather, the only listed co-consorts are Arden and Leesa, who we can assume were Roald's parents. So, they were both chosen, married , but I guess we really don't know where either of them came from. One of them at least was in Valdemar, but what's to say that Heir Leesa didn't fall head-over-heels in love with her year-mate, Herald Arden (or vice versa)? IIRC, there is no rule saying that the co-consort has to be of the royal line of Valdemar. I've gotten into doing the inventory of the stuff in boxes, finally, so now it's like Christmas, opening boxes and boxes and boxes and...I digress...to see the goodies inside, I opened a box today to find different kinds of tarot decks and mini puzzles of Van Gogh works. Odd mix. even if this post is days late, it's been a while since I've been able to check my email and I apologize. I had the weird thought of unsubscribing, but I can't seem to make myself do it. Heather, I agree about Misty's boring sexual relations, male and female, it's like she never got out of writing for juveniles. I know we've done the "What's going on behind those rocks?" bit, and the "Why isn't she showing the gay sex POV?" but more to the point, how many bodice-rippers has Misty been reading? I mean, she always seems to have the "No, don't, stop, don't stop" kind of attitude that I expect from a truly awful romance novel, not to be confused with the truly fun to read romance novels. What's up? Tensen, I need to go watch Ranma now, thanks for the reminder, I only have one video, though, and no way to get more yet, darn. Ok, just to make this official, Chen-Chen, My dear, patient listmate-now-sister-in-the-land-of-the-Gods, I, Lady Thessaly, Goddess of Nomenclature, and Avatar of Chocolate, hereby Name you (at long last) Goddess of the Land of Abbrev. and the Vast Sky.
