Who was it, Heinlein?, who said that you write something and send it out and keep sending it out until it sells? At least if you're collecting rejection slips (and I've received some rather amusing ones over the years) you have a chance of selling; the same cannot be said for the person who never sends anything out. The Mailing List ------------------------ Version 2.0, May 24th 1995 Compiled by Melanie Dymond Harper New in version 2.0: Rewritten to reflect change of site. Added information about 'POSTPONE' setting. Changed feedback address. Swapped bibliography and administrative parts of the FAQ (admin now part 1, bibliography now part 3) New in version 1.4: External group information removed (now in part 5 of FAQ) New in version 1.3: changes to external group information. New in version 1.2: information about other ML-related groups (AOL, Genie & USENET); explicit address for feedback. New in version 1.1: information about release form; way of getting release form; 'new in ...' list. 1. What is this list anyhow? ---------------------------- This is a mailing list for discussion of the works of Mercedes Lackey, including both her fantasy and non-fantasy work, either solo or in collaboration with other authors. It is currently unmoderated. 2. How do I subscribe to the list? ---------------------------------- Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body SUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY your name If you have problems with this, contact the list owner (see below). 3. How do I unsubscribe to the list? ------------------------------------ Send a mail message to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with subject blank and message body UNSUBSCRIBE MERCEDES-LACKEY Again, if you have problems with this, contact the list owner. 4. How do I send messages to the list? -------------------------------------- Messages for the list at large should be sent to mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk (rather than to the list processor address) There is no requirement to follow any threads that may already be in progress. Feel free to start discussion on anything you like -- as long as it's at least vaguely relevant. Flaming, and rudeness in general, is strongly discouraged. 5. I'm getting too much mail from the list. Is there any way to cut it down? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. Assuming that you do not want to leave the list altogether, mail the list processor (listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk), subject blank and message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL DIGEST If you would prefer not to see copies of anything that you have sent to the list, use the following message body instead; SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL NOACK (Note that these two options are mutually exclusive. To return to normal mail from either of them, use the message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL ACK instead.) If you will be absent for some time, you may wish to consider the POSTPONE setting. This is like NOMAIL for lists run under Listserv; you remain subscribed to the list, but do not receive mail from it until you specifically request to start receiving mail again. To do this, send mail to listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk with message body SET MERCEDES-LACKEY MAIL POSTPONE - to cancel it, use one of the options above (ACK, NOACK, DIGEST). Do not forget the 'MAIL' part of the command - it won't work without it. 6. I've written this really great story in one of Misty's universes. Should --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I post it to the list? ----------------------- No, please don't. Reliable information (Judith Louvis who runs Queen's Own, the offline Misty fan club), indicates that you MUST get permission from Misty, in writing, before writing fan fiction in Misty's universe(s). Since I, as list owner, have no way to verify that you have received such permission, a decision has been taken not to allow posting of stories on the list. What you do between yourselves is, of course, entirely up to you. The release, however, is not valid for online fiction, only for printed fiction. As far as I am aware (as of 6th July '94) there is no way of getting permission to release fiction in Misty's world(s) online. A copy of the release for printed work is available from the listowner on request (private email; please don't post requests to the list). 7. Who is the list owner, anyway? --------------------------------- All problems, or queries about the running of the list, should be directed at Melanie Dymond Harper; mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk -or- mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk The second address should only be used if mail to the first address does not get a reply (this most likely means either the site is down for some reason or that I'm away - if the latter, the second address probably won't help either). Do _not_ send problems and such to the list at large. If it's something I've done, or not done, they won't be able to help you! I will try to announce any absences of mine in advance, so that the list members know if problems are likely not to be solved quickly. Any feedback on this post cheerfully received at mel-+AT+-herald.co.uk or mel-+AT+-servalan.demon.co.uk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (end part 1 of 5) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 1996 11:14:12 +0100 (BST) From: Lady Wintersong To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: birthday/mail Message-ID: <199609201014.LAA16111-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk> Happy Birthday, Lady Reesa, Queen of Everything!!! The CD has three extra tracks. -- TIGER BURNING BRIGHT has been spotted in paperback in New York, at least for those who asked about it being out in paperback. (grin) And since= it's out in New York, it's gotta be out everywhere else, since we seem to get books LAST. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 1996 07:29:57 -0700 From: "Linda Malcor, Ph.D" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: The 'squid' on the back cover, in fact, the entire *back Message-ID: <199609201429.HAA19727-+AT+-latimes.com> At 01:09 PM 9/20/96 +0100, Barbara Slater wrote: >The 'squid' on the back cover, in fact, the entire *back cover* is a detail from the front >cover painting, and, IMHO refers to the tail end of the story, where Florian and Karal >(and Altra - though you don't see him) are working the Channelling. About one quarter of it is pure, vintage Misty on par with LHM (The Tower Group). About one third is pretty decent (The Hardorn Group). It's the rest that makes you want to absolutely scream because it's so dry and irrelevant (The Empire Stuff) and the space could have been used so much more effectively by adding on to the really good storylines! >I was a little surprised by how quickly things wrapped up in the last chapter, but Raiders of >the Lost Ark did the same thing... Ever have the feeling that LHM originally did the same thing and Misty later went back and tacked on the scene of Stef going to Sorrows? I sometimes think deadlines have more to do with where Misty ends a story rather than any sense of where the story should end. >One thing I'm wondering is whether the Iron Throne is now >haunted... Interesting possibility. >I'm also betting that Owlflight will focus on Firesong and Karal... One hopes. But then why is the book listed in the lower corner of the chart rather than in its timeline position the way all the other forthcoming Valdemar books have been listed? That is, as long as you aren't the one who caused the pain and suffering. The demon drew people to him, hurt them and killed them, and *then* used the resulting power. But, if a mage is on a battle field, and in dire straits, why not? Magical energy is not good or bad, it just is. How it is obtained and used, now that can be evil. One last thing, Keth did sort of use that kind of magic once, in Oathbreakers. She used the anger (which is another kind of pain, after all) of the Hawks against Char's mages. Matter of fact, she stored it up over a period of time before she used it, if I remember correctly. What do you think? :) At the risk of sounding really goofy...This is Fun!!! :) Tammi >"You=92re so nice=85you=92re not good, you=92re not bad, you=92re just nice.= > I=92m not >good, I=92m not nice, I=92m just right!" >Bernadette Peters-The witch from "Into the Woods" by Stephen Sondheim > > ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 1996 11:53:00 -0500 From: "Ramona Winkelbauer [SERA]" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Charles^2/Irrelevance of the Eastern Empire Message-ID: [Charles raised to the power of two] Does anyone else (no I haven't read SB) think Misty set us up a proton/anti-proton situation with Karal/Charliss? I may be misusing etymological principles but it seems that I remember Carol being the prior/Latin form of Charles (the Carolinas being named after King Charles) and Karal seems to be a simple vowel/consonant shift. Charliss is what I would imagine "Charles" to sound if a griffon was saying the name. [Irrelevance of the Eastern Empire] For all those people who hate the Eastern Empire segments of the _Storm_ trilogy, IMO it shows what Baron Valdemar was rebelling *against* (ok, so maybe we have more detail than maybe we'd like ). So Misty shows us the way the Empire runs and lets us internally contrast that with Valdemar and the Hardorn crew. (Now was that theory called "thesis, antithesis, synthesis" perhaps?)
