The magic system just doesn't really fit your grand unification theory. In that book, all magic is elemental, and what kind you can do is determined by your elemental nature. Like, one of the main characters, Cameron, has almost a pure Fire nature. That also means that he can only do Fire magic. Normal people have almost perfectly balanced natures. The magicians are those who are out of balance, i.e. have more of one Element, and therefore, less of the others. About the Sex Magic, I don't remember it being all that big a deal. There was the thing with Paul duMonde and his "breaking", but that's all I can remember. ========================================================================= I was on my AOL account, and I was glancing at alt.books.m-lackey. After all, at one of the Council meetings in SR, he actually speaks for Rethwellan, rather than Valdemar. I would also guess that Talia outranks him, since she is second in authority to the Monarch herself. I REALLY WISH that Misty would write about how Selenay and Solaris came to form an alliance - and what happened to Talia when she went down to Karse. I also wish she would write more about the priesthood at Karse - we have a very good idea about the training Heralds go through (and to a lesser extent, Bards, Healers, and Blues - and mages), but the purpose, disciplines, and rules of the Karsite priesthood, and society are left up to the imagination. Storm Breaking - no spoilers Well, Storm Breaking finally made its way out here to the Pacific Northwest, and last night, I sat down in the back of the bookstore, and skimmed it - I'll have to wait until the library gets it before I can read in detail..... I thought that it was much, much, MUCH better than Silver Gryphon! Better conceived, better thought out, cleaner, and much more interesting! I don't want to add anything that's a spoiler just yet - not until I've really read it. The ending was also a little bit sudden for me. However, Tiger Burning Bright in paperback was not yet at the bookstore! (Go figure). Jake, you have my condolences and sympathies. Best of luck with your next novel, or your next submission of that novel. And yes, I did love LHM dearly. It was the first time I had read about a character like Van, and it was great. I've tried to go by the time-line, and I've gotten up to BTS. Mark Twain once opened his door to see a young man carrying a little box under his arm. The man then asked Twain if he would like to invest in the man's company to mass market his new invention, which he thought would change the world. Twain, having recently lost money on this type of thing before, declined. As the young man was walking away, Twain asked him his name. The youth replied 'Alexander Graham Bell, sir.' He was carrying a telephone. Sorry if that was a little dry, but it's true. Jake, imagine what would have happened if Bell had stopped trying to market his idea because of that one 'no'. Maybe that publisher didn't see how truly remarkable your book is, but I'm sure that if you try hard enough, you'll find someone. Who knows? I bet that I see that book on the shelf at the store very soon. I promise you, I'll be one of the first to buy it...of many to come. You are certainly entitled to disagree, but I felt like that whole thread was a combination of backstory (which did not belong in the book) and a treatise on Imperial politics (which would have made an interesting political science paper but does not constitute good fiction). Because Melles DOES kill Charliss and does absolutely nothing else to bother/interact with anyone on the other storylines is precisely why the storyline is a waste. I don't care about Charliss. I don't care about Melles. And neither of them does anything to effect anyone I do care about. Plus, what makes you think Charliss's spell would have worked if the Storm hit at precisely the moment he cast it? His magic was not immune to the effects of the Storms. What I mean by "backstory" is "background story": something an author writes to become acquainted with a culture, character, whatever. This type of information is vital to creating a believable world and/or characters/creatures/whatever, but it is not the answer to the question "What is your story about?" Because Melles never interacts with Tremane, all that stuff about their rivalry is backstory (stuff Misty needed to know to make her characters believable but which was not part of the story that she was trying to tell us). The same is true for all the spy information and Imperial politics and army information and the like. >A treatise on Imperial politics? Possibly, but I thought it had more the flavor of >showing the Machievellian (sp?) machinations that went on, and demonstrating what Sejanes >was afraid would happen to Tremane. A character being afraid of something only matters if that something comes to pass. For instance, who would have cared if Indiana Jones was afraid of snakes if he absolutely never encountered them? To tell me that someone is afraid about what might happen to Tremane and then to have nothing happen is simply boring and bad writing. Also, if this is a set up for Owlflight, why isn't Owlflight on the timeline the way the other books were when they were "forthcoming"? >>>Change of subject: >>What? I simply would rather have read about all that stuff instead of plowing through a "Machievellian treatise." And was disqualified for being Kaled'a'in, not Tayledras. Like someone said, Kaled'a'in names seem to often be *animal, or animal*. Not always, but pretty often. HeHe.
