I think it's due out in January or so. Undine? > >>>Does anyone here actually like Cherryh? I read Rusalka, was bored to > >>>death. > > Rusalka? ::ears perk up:: What's that about? Well, it's been years since I read it, so I don't remember a whole lot. (It's one of the few books that I won't even keep on my bookshelf, I liked it that little). It has two heroes, a normal guy, and a younger guy who wants to be a wizard, or something (I think magic is pretty much wish-fulfillment in this book. Like, "I wish my neighbor's barn would set fire," and it would.) They go to someplace in the forest, and meet this cranky old wizard guy. He teaches the younger guy, I think. At some point, the older guy begins to see the wizard guy's daughter's ghost (or rusalka -- I think it's the russian word for ghost). He falls in love or somesuch. The old wizard freaks. IIRC, she was killed by a bad wizard named, I think, Chernevog. He's in suspended animation in the forest or something. Don't really remember much more, except part of the ending. I'm suprised that I remember this much. Guess it just goes to show how many useless facts are rattling around in my head. Like rocks. It's the rest that makes you want to absolutely scream because it's so dry and irrelevant (The Empire Stuff) and the space could have been used so much more effectively by adding on to the really good storylines! My .02: Have to disagree with you, Linda, about The Empire Stuff. I thought it gave us a much better background for Tremane, showing clearly the mindset of the society he'd come from, and the kind of manuevering that went on behind the scenes. It also showed how the 'bad guy' Melles actually did the Tower Group a huge favor by killing Charliss when he did. IMHO, if he hadn't, the TG would have had to deal with a second Cataclysm and the agonies they went through would have been for naught, which would have really ticked me off! Who knows...maybe the Hundred Little Gods had a hand in it ... I suspect they wouldn't want their base of worshippers destroyed ... Change of subject: So we've got the Star-eyed on the Plains, Vykandis dealing with Iftel and Karse, an un-named earth Goddess who has manifested through Vykandis' top priestess in Hardorn, and who knows what in Valdemar. Message-ID: <009A8B63.4523C908.13-+AT+-earlham.edu> Howdy, one and all! First of, I would like to give Jake a hearty scratch behind the ears so that he feels better. (Wildcat sheeps under the computer desk.) Sheep? What sheep? Ahem. sorry. And a flying tackle hug to Wendy who had just joined us. I got SB yesterday!!!!!!!!!!! (image of almost full grown snow leopard bouncing up and down with excitement) I stayed up really late trying to finish it. As for the mutant squid on the back cover, I thought that it was just a result of the mage storms. There were also many other creatures which were mutated by the storms (or the energy that was released or something like that). I wonder when _Owlflight_ comes out? The first Misty book that I read was AotQ. I loved it!!! Very cool book. That's all for now, folks. Lady Wildcat, not a LIG but still likes to be called lady Lady of most things kittenish, blue roses, and dumb luck ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Sep 1996 16:21:17 -0400 From: Rozanna McNeer To: "mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk" Subject: Tarma & IIRC Message-ID: <199609211914_MC1-9A6-A9A5-+AT+-compuserve.com> Valerie wants to know the name of herald and companion that rescued her - herald was Roald (whom I think is Rolan, but that's MHO) Don't know the name of the companion, tho' also IIRC = If I Recall Correctly MHO = my honest opinion BTW= by the way, not to be confused with BTS AFAIK = as far as I know those are the most commonly used abbrev. on the list Firemist ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 837 *********************************
