And I think that Talia is still needed, because she offers a more objective opinion than Daren could--since he's tied up in Selenay's lifebond and all. He'd be more inclined to advise Selenay to do what was good for *her*, rather than what was good for Valdemar. I'm not saying Daren is being selfish or anything, just that this is probably where his tendencies would run to. Talia would be more likely to give Selenay a good kick when she needed it.<<< Lifebonds, IMO, need a bit of help from the outside on what is good for the overall cause than what's good for each other. Actually, I suppose the absolute truth would be that I got hooked by the short story in S&SIII (yes, I have an copy, which I bought when it was first published, and I think I will follow Rozanna's (?) lead and be buried with it. *grin*). When I read that she had just had her first novel accepted and it would be out soon, I kept an eye out and snapped it up, as soon as it hit the shelves. The only thing that truly upset me about that is that Misty didn't finish the thread. If you're going to do something like that to a character people care about so much, you should at least give us something more than a "Wham, Bam, Thank you, Ma'am" resolution. I would much rather Misty had spent her time playing out that plotline than spending her efforts on Melles and company. >Also, in the >second book, there was a lot of stuff about Firesong wanting a lifemate, what >happened to that? I could have sworn Misty was goin' somewhere with it. I think she is in the process of doing something with it but just didn't get where she was heading. Remember, Silverfox said what he prefered was a lovemate? That's what he's found in Firesong. Firesong will eventually see the value of that (I don't think he's quite realized the value of what he has in Silverfox), but I assume that's where the story is headed. And as a non-published aspiring writer myself, I sympathize, rejection slips are the pitts. But don't give up, just be persistant and eventually you'll be published. I was upset at what happened to Firesong & Karal, as well as the fact that everything seemed hastily thrown together at the end. Ahhhhhh! I hate being frustrated at the end of a book! They reminded me of something to give to someone about to runaway from home to change their mind. I cant really say there is any Gen X stuff, or not much anyway. The things she talks about are a little unsettling. There was one I read half way and put down because she DID do a great job of descibing the situation, and it hit a bit close to the bone for me. But other than that, I'd say they're at least worth checking out of the library. I liked Knight of Ghost and Shadows much better, which ties in to Serrrated Edge. -------------------------------------------------------- Wendy wrote: Does everyone have a Misty character that they identify with? Right down to her family situation! I always thought I had a lot in common with her. I've always been "overly" compassionate with others, almost like Karal, much to my husbands annoyance. And your right, I certainly has its problems. ---------------------------------------- Just wondering, cant anyone come up with something NICE to say about Larry? Everytime I see something here about him, its usually not. He's not THAT bad! I mean, should we REALLY be talking about Misty husband this way? Apparently SHE saw something in him! I did feel sorry for him, but I just think Misty should have done More on the situation. What had me confused is that the reason firesong was so desperate to have a lifebond was because he was sick from the effect of the storms. But when he's at the tower, he seems fine. Did Silverfox heal him when we weren't looking? I do suppose Firesong got a lifemate in Silverfox. Did that cure it? I think Misty forgot to look at her notes when she worte parts of SB. I only started on the Internet this month, so I'm very new at this. Uhm, but's it's the BAEN and maybe TOR books that are suffering from CFOS (cover-falling-off-syndrome), not the Daw Books. Most of my Bujold books and, IIRC, one of the Tregarde books did fall apart. The DAW books are amazing, no matter how often I reread them, they just stay... complete. Now if only they would use acid-free paper, 'cause it's starting to yellow. ======================================================================= Vrondi wrote: >Am I the ONLY one that got hooked by something else? Well, my first Misty was her story in the Darkover anthology. And some time later, _Swordsworn_. Does that count? The first novel by her that I picked up was WoFate. Wow, that was just 3 years ago! And what reading all these english books did to my vocabulary... ======================================================================= Cennydd, I just read _Born to Run_ and wasn't overly impressed by it. Clearly Young Adult stuff . I didn't much care about that "Man with a mission"-stuff and the message for runaway kids. No subtlety at all. And I didn't much care about the cars. But I can recommend _Knight of Ghosts and Shadows_, if you're absolutely willing to read some of her urban fantasy stuff. Very good. I'm still puzzling my brains over the question of what did Misty write and what Ellen. ====================================================================== A whole on-topic post! Wow.
