Hopelessness and fear > affect people subtly sometimes, all the more so when the welfare of a lot > of other innocent people are depending on them. I know, and I did think about this, but then I thought of other books I've read where there is war/horror/fear - and decided that, human spirit being what it is, we tend to find pleasure/happiness/warmth in the small things. Yes there's few scenes that lighten the mood a bit, but the point I was trying to get across was the lack of joy. Maybe joy is a poor word to chose - I'm thinking of the undercurrent of warmth/trust/love that underlay much of Tigana (for example) - I thought that book, while reducing me to tears about every chapter, also had joy and light and love and trust and warmth and, and, and (okay, it's a hard act to follow). I don't get the impression that the characters in Winds/Storms give each other cuddles very often, the relationships lacked affection. - --------------------------------------------------------------------- While reading Julie's and Heathers's mails about Tayledras marriage customs, and kid raising, I got to thinking about what happens to the low-fliers? The kids who don't have any magic, who don't find the thought of becomming one with the forest, and a killer in their spare time appealing? The bumblers, the happy-go-lucky's, the dreamers, the plodders, the one's that hate exercise (it's innate, believe me, I have *always* hated exercise), faint at the sight of blood (it's also innate), can't bear the thought of eating meat, let alone killing anyone. What happens to them? - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dooie Firemist, for the sake of the non-dutch speakers, it's not cold here, but it's chucking it down (so what's new?), but, heck, I *like* North European coastal/island weather patterns. Ah yes - all this Storm Breaking stuff - not even seen the damm book yet, let alone browsed/read it. Anyhow, I'm getting some idea of what happens, and, with regard to the talk of the magic leaving, people having to learn to live in a new world - anyone read Sheri Tepper's "True Game" books, principally the Jinian trilogy? Well the gift of "magic" is taken away from the people, and they are all faced with life without their talents (as Ms Tepper calls the gifts). ML's ending, from what I've read in spoilers, reminds me of this. OK, another on-topic, thought provoking, questioning, dynamic mail (where?!), I shall quit while I'm ahead. Right up to the end you were doing well. Without meaning to belittle the plight of uneducated/dependant spouses, custody of children is not heavily weighted by whether said parent has a job, training or education. Check out the welfare figures of single parent families after divorces - the vast majority of them will be single mothers. Generally (yes, generalizing) the only time kids end up going into the custody of the father is when there is more than one child and one child expresses a strong desire to go with the father. The fact is that regardless of their ability and desire to look after their children, in a divorce situation, the father loses custody far more often than not. It's a consideration mentioned when you study family law. And legally, whether something is in the husband's name or joint names, is irrelevant. Generally, property acquired during the marriage is split. Rough (and highly unfair) rule of thumb? Husband gets slightly more of the property [1] and wife gets the kids & house [2]. Grrr. And now a small rant. If I don't reply to threads on the list here for a while, it's 'cos I'm sick of inadvertantly reading spoilers about SB. Not, mind you, the ones clearly marked with a page of white space - and when you're reading the digests, that's very much appreciated - but the ones that are tossed, willy-nilly into lines of argument. Little one-word-wonders like: "yada yada, like Karal, pre-." or "Now that Vanyel blah blah." Despite very carefully paging over spoilers, I can just about quote the whole damn plot of SB. No names & no blame, (no, none of them have been yours Danya), but I'm not impressed. So please, please folks, don't tuck major spoilers into the middle of sentences in the middle of braids. And no, SB is not out here in Australia as far as I know, (though I'd be happy to be corrected on the point). Kerry. I do a great deal of RPGing -- I started when I was ten, playing with my parents good old-fashioned AD&D, and now am involved in a lot of different games, involving one Greyhawk campaign, several White Wolf campaigns, and a wierd GURPS thingie, as well as a Live Action game. Jake, I sympathise. I have met many of these people you describe -- the ones who "are" their characters. Some of them, like the guy you talked about running around on all fours, can go a bit overboard, but let me take Devil's advocate for a moment. I'm going to use White Wolf in my argument, since that is the gaming world I know best these days. Vampire, the game of gothic horror. The first in the white wolf games. It appealed to a great many people on a great many levels. For me, the big thrill was that there was finally a game that emphasized ROLL PLAYING rather than just running around, cacking monsters and getting treasure. The depth and scope of the game, IMHO, was just cool. For many others (and these are usually the ones you meet who explain that they "are" their characters), it was a realization that someone understood. The could read the book, look into the dark mirror that is Vampire, and see themselves reflected back. For the first time in their lives, something seemed to be talking to them. I have met many of these people (and to a degree, I suppose, am one), but few of them actually believe that they "are" a vampire or a werewolf or mage or faerie (Jake, your friend David may be one of the exceptions :p). More likely, there are aspects (probably many) of the character that sing to their soul. Here is a chance to face the world without fear, among others of your kind, without the masks that they must forever wear in order to make the world accept them. I know that in every character I play, (or write) there is an aspect of me -- probably many. Every new character is a chance to explore a side of me in situations that I would never face in real life. As I grow as a person, my characters grow as well -- different phases of my life have created completely different types of characters. But they are all me. It's interesting that I've never really felt this way about books Ir read. I enjoy reading a great deal, but it has never been an escape, because it was never me. I identified with the charactes, but I was never in control; the choices were never personal. No part of me hinged on the direction these people's lives took. I've always had roll playing -- even before I knew what it was. My sister and I used to spend hours making up strange fantasy games back when we were little. Well, this has been fairly rambling. I hope I've managed to communicate something. Also, I'm in semi-lurk mode right now. Just got my web page, and am currently trying to figure out how to get it to work. But I am still here. :) Barbara Keeper of the Lord Vkandis Preposition Hamster Muad'dib magik-+AT+-socketis.net "The Heart may freeze, or it can burn The pain will ease, if I can learn There is no future; there is no past I live this moment as my last..." -- Another Day, _RENT_ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 14:05:45 +0000 From: Shaun Rodger To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: TOIB...... Okay, it seems that the blue Kal'enedral are those Sworn to both the Warrior and the Crone. Or so it says in WoFate. Things get a bit confused, especially in SB. First off (no spoilers yet) is who gets Bound to the Crone. According to _The Oathbound_ p25, shaman, Healers, and the two Elders of each Clan get Bound to the Crone. A bit of spoiler space is appropriate (and for the rest of the post.) EVERYTHING AFTER HERE IN THIS POST IS SB SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!! Is it just me, or is the whole An'desha/shaman thing in SB a bit confused. He says something like being a blue Kal'enedral is being Bound to Her in Her guise of Knowledge Keeper (bad paraphrase from memory). I can't remember the exact quotes or sections, but he acts as if it's separate from being a shaman. Like you don't have to be one to be a blue Kal'enedral. I would say that being a Shin'a'in Healer and Swordsworn would qualify for the blue (since Healers get bound to the Crone), but IIRC, the Healer who works on Karal is in brown, not blue. ======================================================================== > From: catwoman I wrote: > >That reminds me. We see the Final Storm scene, with everyone okay, then WHAM, we've got mostly casualties. The Avatars can't physically manifest anymore, Van & Co. are gone, Florian & Need are dead. Well, we _did_ wonder who Misty would kill off at the end of this trilogy. Guess that Shin'a'in proverb works. "Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it." ========================================================================= > From: dbackhau-+AT+-isou10.estec.esa.nl > > Ah yes - all this Storm Breaking stuff - not even seen the damm book yet, > let alone browsed/read it. ML's ending, from what I've read in spoilers, reminds > me of this. Well, the magic's not totally gone. It's just that there are no more ley-lines or nodes. The magic is just spread evenly over everywhere. So no magic that requires a lot of power, like a Gate. Someone else (I think it was Kerry) liked Jag's idea of Florian being 'Lendel. Nope, can't be. We've got pretty good proof in SB that it's Stef/'Lendel, not just Stef who's been in the forest. The only clue of ammalgamation we had before was that his hair kept changing from red to blond. In SB, we've got this: SB, p362 "As the second spirit manifested, Karal didn't find him any easier on the nerves, perhaps because he couldn't seem to make up his mind whether he wanted to look like a muscular, square-jawed fellow who was a bit taller than Vanyel, or a slight, triangular-faced, large-eyed lad who was shorter and more slender than the Herald-Mage." Obviously, he's shifting back and forth between his 'Lendel (the tall one) and Stef (short) forms. Like 'Fandes and her human form. Well, I was just looking at this the other night (for jesto'vath descriptions for my magewar post) so I know where it is. Oathbound, p.25 " 'The easiest of Her faces to deal with are the Maiden and the Mother, they're gentler, and more forgiving; the hardest are the Warrior and the Crone. Maiden and Mother don't take Oathbound to themselves, Warrior and Crone do. Crone's Oathbound--no, I won't tell you--you *guess* what they do.' 'Uh,' Kethry's brow furrowed in thought, and she nibbled a hangnail. 'Shamans?' 'Right! And Healers and the two Elders in each Clan, who may or may not be Healers or shamans. Those the Crone Binds are Bound, like the Kal'enedral, to the Clans as a whole, serving with minds and talents instead of their hands.'" Is that the scene you meant Firemist?
