There's a lot of life in fantasy... like Misty will drop an ANNOYING (paraphrased) proverb or give us an unasked-for lecture occaisonally, and it's hard to see how you can run away from life permanently when someone's ~constantly~ preaching at you. (Can you tell I'm starting to find her frequent sermons slightly stupid? ::sigh:: You can almost hear the next thing she's going to say... rather like some sort of demented "don't cross the street without looking" lady. It takes all the poetry out of prose. And ::falter:: it's like her characters all went more two-dimensional suddenly ::blush:: Uh.oh.my. I've joined the ranks of "Misty isn't what she used to be" Sorry...) *tries again without the ranting part* I... I guess it's that I try and empathize with characters, that I enter an escapist mode temporarily, and if you get my attention, you have all of it. *frown* No, that's not it. It's that I see enough life in *sputter* well, most things, really ::sigh::, prose or poetry, to escape into it. You can escape into a lot of things. And the choice is to either live or die with the character. (makes for a bit of confusion at first, I tell you *giggle*) Good authors make you see the options. Why. And then you go out and write yourself :P *chortle* ::sigh:: Ah, burn it, I'm screwing up. Escapism is a lot of things. Well... oh, never mind. Here's a poem by Anna Akhmatova that I like a lot *gryn* ... now's the prose over, now begins the poetry... (and here I thought it was supposed to be a transition from poetry to prose ::chuckle::) _Willow_ I was raised in checkered silence in the cool nursery of the young century. Human voices did not touch me, it was the wind whose words I heard. To: Subject: Ecstasia Message-ID: <27SEP96.25720390.0037.MUSIC-+AT+-ACADEMIC.TRUMAN.EDU> Author is Francesca Lia Block. Sequel (which is good, but IMO not q uite *as* good) is Primavera. I'll be glad to give a capsule summary, but be warned, it sounds REALLY STRANGE when you say it out loud. Okay, it's a *little* strange even in the book, but somehow it seems much less demented when Block writes it. There's a world that's mainly desert, populated by small villages where life is pretty normal. However, in this world, there's a city called Elysia, where every good and enjoyable thing is abundant and free, and everyone is young and beautiful. The latter is because when residents get older and less-beautiful, they retire in shame to a hellish underground world to wait out their time until death. So you can have the regular, plain-ol' life, or you can have your every wish fulfilled for a period of time, followed by another, fairly lousy period of time when you are exiled from Elysia. The main characters are a band in Elysia -- Rafe and his sister Calliope, her boyfriend Dionisio, and Paulo, who's madly in love with Rafe. The plot involves several strands: Rafe's girlfriend becoming addicted to a deadly drug called Orpheus that induces visions of meeting again with your dead loved ones, and the identity of Rafe and Calliope's father being chief among them. The real question that pervades the story, though, is whether the band -- Ecstasia -- will choose to leave Elysia while they still can, building the dreamed-of garden in the desert where they can live together to grow old and raise Calliope and Dionisio's unborn child. And, um, I guess I've kinda spoiled the suspense of the Rafe and Paulo relationship. Sorry. But it's a cool book, very *different* from anything I've ever read. It's on my Really Really Good bookshelf. The whole tone is very lush, surreal, erotic, and poetic. I guess it wouldn't be to everyone's tastes, but I'd recommend giving it a try anyway. And I'd doubly recommend it to the Ladies of the Pink Wand. Paulo is a terrific character. You'll love him, I promise. (Okay, I don't *promise.* How should I know how you'll feel about him? But I think you'll probably love him.) Holy Cow, Catherine! I don't *know* the date of that post. I post two or three times a day and have, with a two or three month interlude, pretty much every day for nine months now. Your guess is as good as mine, especially since I've posted Multiple Times about Swordspoint. (I should get a commission on that book.) I think it was before the computer lab in my dorm opened, which means the last week in August or early September sometime. And from now on, just for Kerry, I'm going to try to be wrong more often. MISTY JUST GETS BETTER AND BETTER! SQUID ARE CENTRAL TO THE PLOT OF THE STORM TRILOGY! LARRY DIXON IS THE NEXT ORSON SCOTT CARD! VANYEL WAS A SLUT! DATING ALEC IS *GREAT* FOR YOUR HEALTH AND SANITY! Sorry. I tried. Look, guys, don't take it out on me. It's *hard* to be as insightful, articulate, and intelligent as I am. I just feel very blessed to find a group of people as tolerant and accepting as your fine selves. I read in an interview somewhere that she wrote the filk to help her develop a scene. Like "Fundamentals" and Kris teaching Talia to ground and center. She also used to write it in her spare time when she was a programmer. In fact, the jacket to FF&F says that she got creative at work. Some of it was my fault, because I was socially backward and didn't know how to handle the situation- but then, not one adult- including my parents, ever tried to teach me ways of handling it. Or if they did, they gave up too easily. So creating fantasy worlds and reading about other people's fantasy worlds gave me an escape while I endured jr. high and high school. My support for my not so humble opinion is- look at the variety of opinion about these characters we've seen on this list! How many debates have we had about whether or not Elspeth is a bitch? Some people wouldn't want Vanyel as a friend because he's too moody and intense. And as the extremely intelligent and tasteful Heather said: >> They also had Firesong, whom I really really really liked, because he wasn't so thrilled with wrecking his life for The Good of Valdemar.
