You're assuming a definition of "self defense" If you ~have~ done something "wrong" Or "horrendous" then does that mean they have the right to attack you? If an ex-slave attacked their former master because it was a horrible practice anad they were beaten, does that mean that all the killing was right? If your parents hit you because you did something "horrendous" does that give you the right to hit back in "self defense"? Oh, and how about someone who doesn't know their own strength, maybe they're mentally retarded, and, when hit, kills someone. I'm sure they'd say it was self defense. What about armed robbery? That's a Federal offense. But what if the person who does it is starving, has 3 kids, is a war veteran, etc. 3. Well, if it depends on the circumstances, it IS a gray region, then, isn't it? Most things ~are~ gray regions. And what's right and wrong are part of morality (custom) while what's good and bad are part of the notion of ethics (individual). Sorting the difference between right and wrong is ~highly~ personal/ societal. >Now, it's very true that I can feel sorry for >myself for being attacked, but why should I feel sorry for him if he was >the one trying to kill me, and I stopped him? OIC. Self defense is only when someone is trying to physically kill you, suddenly. Person attacks you on the subway, then, desperate for your wallet. You don't know that. You kill them. Self defense. *wince* Your best friend is on drugs. Killing rage. What do you do? Or how about a guard dog defending their home. No, better yet, let me give you an example where speciesism won't interfere. How about a child that saw you carry away its mother to be buried. They try a knife. That's why you should feel sorry. People are still human, dammit. We're fallible, we can be terribly evil. It's only where you draw the line. >What of killing one person to save the world from cancer or the like? I >have to say that it is downright wrong. The world isn't a story where such >things occur. There is no such thing as someone fated to destroy a nation >or etc. What if you believed there was? And "for the good of the world" you did destroy them. We don't know if we're right or wrong when we draw up our ethical values. For instance. People who believe that abortion doctors are murderers of innocent children. Are they right or wrong? Or maybe when we enforce the death penalty. >We in the real world have other options. Isolating that person >from the rest of the world, finding a way to cure him. If we were to kill >a person for that, why not kill them for having too red of hair? It's >wrong, that's why. If you're allowed to turn away Hitler's humanity, am I allowed to turn away the humanity of everyone who eats meat because I'm a vegetarian? And yes, I'm perfectly aware of what Hitler is responsible for. I sat in a pizza parlor and stared at the oven, thinking about people ~cooking~? I didn't touch anything to eat (although admittedly I had stuff to drink =D ) for another day and a half. Okay so that's not a long time not to eat but it's a long time to think. *gryn* And be sick, and go into shock... Why do we admire people like Chief Joseph so much? Fight against evil, not against people. And BTW, what I say shouldn't automatically get disqualified because I don't eat *swallows and pauses for breath* meat any more than you should discard wisdom and knowledge from people you don't like, or from people who are young. *sudden gryn* That should cover my tracks. You said *exactly* what I was thinking. I was thinking the bad guy in The Crow, but I couldn't think what other movie he was in (he's the same guy you're talking about). Yep, he would definitely make a great Ancar! Of course, the guy who plays "Q" on Star Trek would too. And Selenay . . . Kate Mulgrew. On Witchcraft . . . I aggree with Jake. Daniel Delgado's post, umm, well it showed a certain ignorance of the subject. I'm not flaming, I am *trying* to be tactful. I didn;t appreciate the " spooky " and " harmless " comments either. So, Dan, please educate yourself more on a subject *before* you attempt to advise others on what something is and isn't. Especially if that subject happens to be religion. I'm sure you've noticed by now, religion being the extremely personal thing it is, people don't appreciate their religion being discussed in an inaccurate way. BTW, if you are *seriously* interested in learning more, Silver Raven Wolf's " To Ride A Silver Broomstick: New Generation Witchcraft " would be a good place to start. While still a student of Wicca ..> the things that were mentioned made me kind of roll my eyes and think "okay, time to straighten someone else out" but I see everyone else has done a much better job..:) (another good book that was recommended to me was _Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner_ by Scott Cunningham, who wrote several books on Wiccanism until his death a few years ago) Also, one thing that people who are curious about wicca and witchcraft might want to notice is that Jake called himself a witch, not a warlock. I don't know of *any* male witches who call themselves warlocks (roughly, the term means "oathbreaker" ). I hear about that alll the time. Yeesh. This post needs an obmisty... OH! I finally started reading the Bardic Voices books! I've had a reeely hard time finding _The Lark & the Wren_ but I found it and I love it! Can't wait to finish this and get my hands on the other two! I think I've decided to name my first daughter Rune...its a pretty name. :) one thing I noticed about this book is something I've noticed about a lot of Misty books. The blurbs on the back cover only tell about 1/16 of the story! And in MPawn's case, it barely told the story at all! It was almost totally misleading. Its not that Van refused to learn how to use his powers, he didn't understand *why* he had to. Very frustrating. That was Alan Rickman, and the bad guy in The Crow was Michael Wincott. Unless Firemist was talking about the Bad Guy's Evil Henchman, who WAS Michael Wincott.
