I said that it was because he was already bonded to Vree. I didn't mean that there would be a problem being bonded to Vree and a Companion. What I meant was that he'd be the only one bonded to 2 beings. Everyone in the series is bonded to either one or the other. In the same vein, why didn't Elpseth get a bondbird while she was in the Vale? And, if Darkwind was Chosen, then it goes into the pattern of (almost) every character that enters Valdemar getting Chosen. Hope that helps and/or makes sense. My name is Ursula and I decided to finaly delurk after being on this list for quite some time. For the age poll record, I'm 23. In response to Nina concerning why Darkwind was not chosen, you mentioned that he could not be bonded to 2 beings. I'm wondering if you included Wintermoon, Darkwind's brother? His case is mentioned as being unusual granted but not unheard of. In theory it seems possible that one can have a bond with two beings but with Darkwind's case it may be a matter of loyalty to Valdemar. Yes, he loves Elspeth and probably feels something for Valdemar because it is her homeland but he might not have been chosen simply because he has a higher loyalty to his people (the whole duty/mission idea of the cleansing of the lands commanded...or is that highly suggested?... by his Goddess.) The Companions would realize he would be torn between the two loyalties and leave him un-chosen. Am I making any sense whatsover or am I babbling? I seem to recall this idea of bonding to two beings having been bounced around before but don't recall what, if any, decision came out of it. I hope not, this is interesting!! And here are my character/author matches (with some of my reasons, to start off the debate): Adele - MZB [Adele/Elfrida's sections remind me very strongly of Mists of Avalon. Adele and the other gemen have the same sort of earthy yet spiritual feel, and the same awesome authority as Viviane and Morgaine. Also, some of Adele reminded me of what little I have read of Darkover (HawkMistress and part of Sharra's Exile).] Lydana - Andre Norton [Skita was a dead giveaway. Also the characterisation of Margrit(?) and Eel was almost the exact same thing as Andre used in her first Witch World book with the witch and Loyse of Verlaine. Besides, Andre is the only one of the authors who goes in for patronymics in a big way.] Shelyra - Misty [I shouldn't have to spell this out, but Shelyra is almost identical in characterization to Elspeth. Plus the whole Gypsies thing is very reminiscent of the Bardic Voices series.] Thom - Andre(?) [there is something about Thom that reminded me of all of Andre Norton's street children and underworld characters (particularly in the Forerunner type books). And of all three writers, Thom's capture and death seems to fit her style best.] Leopold - Misty [I wasn't sure about this (I thought for a little while it might be MZB), but nobody writes characters with that kind of innocent idealism the way Misty does. The scene where he was cooking for his pages and then sitting with before the fell asleep threw me off, but then I realized that he reminded me of Tarma, and there is no way a real mother, like MZB, would write that kind of cloyingly sweet, unrealistically cute parenting scene without have some other more realistic ones available to balance it out.] Apolon - Andre [or a collaboration headed by Andre. He is very similar to her other Dark Mages. Still, Misty can write horror, so he might be a collaboration. Hard to say.] OK, everyone, there are my thoughts. What are yours? Anyone get a different match-up? We can discuss it and I will tell you why your idea is wrong. *grin* (Hint: my idea is right! ). Seriously, I am dubious of the male characters (I am pretty certain about the female characters), so I would welcome input. I recognized the song because Loreena McKennit has a version of it on her " The Mask And The Mirror " CD. ============================================================= I have a totally offtopic question, anyone who reads Andre Nortons Witch World books, can you tell me if they have to be read in order? Should I read them first ============================================================= ObMisty - I've mentioned this before but I don't think it made it to the list, since there is so much less magic, won't there be more mages using blood magic to raise power? Message-ID: <71453.brie0030-+AT+-gold.tc.umn.edu> To everyone who responded (oh-so-wonderfully) to my plea about that dang song, a heartfelt Thank You! And, you know, if anyone has heard of that song from another source, or has it, or knows something about it, or whatever, and just want an excuse to e-mail someone, drop me a line and tell me about it (*privately*, of course, since we can't clog up the list like that). I've been looking all over, and I've found at least 4 different versions in lyrics alone. (This is so much fun!) Thanks everybody! ObMisty: The Lark and the Wren was my first Misty book, *and* it was the first book ever that made me want to rush home and read it after class. Also, I haven't read any of the Serrated Edge stuff--is it worth the strain on my poor student's budget to read these? I've been seeing a lot of mixed opinions. I liked Di Tregarde, so would I like these? I just finished the book the other day. :) Just a quick note. "The Bonny Swans" is a truly beautiful song, in my opinion. I have heard it performed live, by a Celtic music trio at UD, and I have a recording of it, on Loreena McKennitt's "The Mask and Mirror." The melody is exquisite and I, personally, think that the lyrics are quite nice. Of course, given Misty's efforts as a lyricist, I am not surprised that she considers the song to be "sappy" and "trite." On the other hand, (as you may have guessed) I don't particularly care for Misty's lyrics (having never heard her songs performed, I can't comment on the music--which may be stunning, for all I know.) Oh, well. BTW, I have mentioned this before, but I will do it again. If you don't already have Loreena's albums, run out and buy them...NOW! They are the musical equivalent to GGK's novels: rich, textured, and working on several levers at once...and so achingly beautiful you want to cry. I have gotten kinda teary when listening to "Lady of Shallot" or "The Old Ways." And "Dark Night of the Soul" (based on the poem by San Juan de la Cruz) is incredible. Oh, and Catwoman, consider that your grandmother is in my thoughts, and I am sending good thoughts in her direction. Unfortunately, as a radical agnostic, that is all I can offer, but for what it's worth, she has it. Yes! Thendara House is the best, but read Shattered Chain first to understand what is going on. They are thought-provoking (why/how are women different from men? does it vary by planet or are there absolutes? what is "feminism"? is separatism the answer for women in a patriarchal society?...) but they tell a good story at the same time. I didn't like City of Sorcery as much as the first two, but it's still worth reading. and Lady Sophia wrote: >Did we ever find out what happened to Magda? Did she make a cameo in The Bloody Son, after Cleindori and what's-his-name were killed? The story "Growing Pains" by Susan Schwartz in Free Amazons of Darkover has Magda after the Forbidden Tower is broken. I always assumed if MZB printed stories with her characters in the Darkover anthologies that they should be considered cannonical, even if she didn't write them. I don't remember Magda being mentioned in The Bloody Sun, but it's been a long time since re-reading.
