Message-ID: <59F3C21A97-+AT+-wheeler.northland.edu> Hi! Just thought I'd add my name to the list of growing newbies. Actually I was on the server last winter, so I don't really know if I'd be considered new or not..... I'm legally considered a resident of Wisconsin (Ashland to be precise), but I prefer to call Minnesota home, which is where I go when I'm on break from classes. I'm 20 (going on 21 in early December) and I'm a huge Star Trek and Anne McCaffrey fan (along with Misty of course). I'm also a Biology/Environmental Studies major at Northland College in aforementioned Ashland, land of eternal winter. As for the question of the grove-born, I agree with Rozanna when she said that the grove born are reincarnated monarchs, at least in the MOC's case. In Storm Warning Karal mentions that the other Companions treated Rolan like a genial approachable monarch. Plus the fact that Rolan resembles Roald so much. If we knew that name of the MOC during Roald's reign this would be much easier to figure out because it's quite likely that Rolan might have been around when Roald was. On to another tangent, has anyone heard anything about a compilation of short stories on Valdemar? I was looking around on the internet and one of the book dealers mentions something about a compilation due out early next year. Gotta go, dinner is calling! "We're Starfleet Officers. Is it >any good? Oof. Short answer, yes it's wonderful. Longer answer... OK I'll try to get this right. MZB's first published book, and the first Darkover book was called "Sword of Aldones" (1962) a real "thud and blunder" type novel which she had had to condense down combining characters and making the plot... In 1975 she wrote a prequel to "Sword" called "The Heritage of Hastur" and, in doing so, made the decision not to be bound by the things in "Sword" that had been, well let's just say less than perfect. Finally in 1985 she wrote "Sharra's Exile" which covered the same time period as "Sword" (almost infinitly better, IMHO) leaving "Sword" as a sort of Non-Book (in the sprit of unpersonhood) although you might still be able to find it in used book stores. It was most recently published in an Ace double with "The Planet Savers" (also 1962) to which there is a reference in "Exile's Song" (1996) which completes(hah!) the trilogy. I expect another book, hope it's not another 15 years! I've read both _The Godmother_, and _The Godmother's Apprentice_, and I argree with Mat, the _The Godmother_ is better. I enjoyed both books, but, being a mother, some parts of _The Godmother_ made my blood run cold. For Catwoman: So sorry to hear about your grandmother. I wish that there was some- thing I could say that would help. My thoughts and prayers are with you both. Message-ID: <199610120734.AAA01321-+AT+-moon.nbn.com> Just a thought on the casting thread. I know Alberich is supposed to have brown hair and eyes, (at least I think he is), but I can't think of anyone I would rather see play him than Rutger Hauer. So just give the man some contacts, and dye his hair, and I think that he could pull it off admirably. :) Dawnstar ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Oct 96 00:52:06 -0700 From: To: Subject: Fwd: Re: Cast of characters Message-ID: <199610120747.AAA01485-+AT+-moon.nbn.com> >I agree Adrian Paul (I don't know if I spelled that right) would be >great . >Dawn > >>Okay, maybe I'm watching too much t.v. I'm drooling again. Sorry, guys, (sheepish look as she shrugs shoulders), can't help it. The book helped explain some things to me, so I definitely agree it should be put on the list. i'd like to recommend another couple books if people are still looking: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. If she's a sweet cat, you could call her Bastet, or if she's fierce name her Sekhmet (yes, I do know a tad about Egyptian mythos). THe only black cat I ever had owned me when I was 5, so the poor thing was saddled with Shwartz - which is only marginally better than Sootie In the back of Cotn there's a picture of Misty and one of those life-of-the- writer blurbs that says shes has mulitple cats and computers. hm. she should at least no some things about cats -> but!!! there used to be disclaimers in the books that the Companions don't act like horses, teh bondbirds don't act like normal raptors, so I assume she would also mean that Firecats don't act like normal cats. Attilla the Nun in CotN certainly seemed like a normal cat to me. . . Firemist ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 871 *********************************
