That's it. Every used bookstore in Seattle seems to have this Misty book and no other, except for the time I saw and purchased 2 arrows books.) Anyway, Pat Wrede's books are: The Harp of Immach Thyssel Shadow Magic Daughter of Witches Caught in Crystal The Seven Towers Sorcery and Cecilia The first four of these are all Lyra novels (set in the same world of Lyra at "The Raven Ring"). "Caught in Crystal" is probably my favorite, although they are all so brilliant that it is very hard to choose. I've asked lots of people these questions, and I've gotten only one satisfying answer, so I'll put it to all of you. 1. What happens to a Herald's Companion when s/he is Chosen as Monarch's Own? Like Vanyel, for instance....what would have happened to Yfandes if he had been Chosen Monarch's Own like he thought he was going to be? Does he get two Companions? Would Fandes had to have left? It wouldn't have been like it would have been for Jisa, where her bonding to another Companion would have been just for show, until she bonded with Taver(?). But Savil said that Fandes would have died if Vanyel had killed himself right after they bonded, so she certainly would have died if she had to give him up years after they had been together. But Van didn't even seem concerned over this question--he simply stated to Fandes that he thought he was going to be Chosen King's Own, so this leads me to believe that maybe he would only have a show-type of bond with the Monarch's Own Companion, and keep his real bond with Fandes. I'd really like some more opinions on this, as I haven't had one good answer to this at all. I even posed this question to Misty and all she replied was, "Vanyel wasn't Chosen King's Own." Not a particularly helpful reply, I must admit. 2. Why, after all this time, and after it's been established(especially in recent books) that Companions can Speak anyone they choose to, does Rolan not mindspeak Talia? The fact that she doesn't have the Gift is no excuse anymore. Florian Speaks Karal, and he isn't Gifted, if I recall. Talia has Empathy, and she's bonded to a Grove-born stallion, so Speaking her should be no problem to Rolan. The only answer I've gotten from someone was that maybe Speaking to someone without the Gift would be like trying to talk to someone who was almost deaf. It would take lots of effort to make yourself heard. Again, I asked Misty, and she only wrote back, "Talia didn't have Mindspeech," which didn't really answer my question much. I just find it frustrating, because Rolan is such an enormous part of the books but it's almost impossible to relate to him since you can't get into his mind, except through vague emotional impressions of Talia's. I'd like to see his personality and quirks, like we did with Tantras, Kris' Companion, or with Gwena, or Florian. As he is, he seems almost untouchable or unrealistic. It reminds me of that scene in Bambi, where Bambi's father was standing up on the cliff, high above everyone else..well, you get the picture. I'd love to hear any and all theories on these questions. First of all I believe what would have happened is that Yfandes would have left him and become a lone runner again until someone like Vanyel came along again and then she would have chose him. Since he wasn't chosen Kings Own we will never truly know what would have happened. Becuase there bond won't allow Rolan to mindspeak with his chosen because she can't mindspeak back. He only shows emotions to her and then very rarely talks with other heralds maybe he just doesn't believe he should talk when the conversation couldn't be two way in the mind. There bond is so tight anyway mindspeaking wouldn't help that much since she can just enter his mind and I figure it would also work the opposite way as well. >I just find it frustrating, because Rolan is such an enormous part of >the books but it's almost impossible to relate to him since you can't >get into his mind, except through vague emotional impressions of >Talia's. Rolan isn't supposed to be really a major part in her descisions because he wants her to make her own choices instead of relying on those of the past. Rolan may find it difficult to show his true being because he doesn't think he should or just because he is too serious minded. > >I'd love to hear any and all theories on these questions. > >WTTW, all >Jacquelle > > >:Really, Chosen, you need a better signature than this.: >:Yes, oh, Wisest of the Wise.: > > Aistes ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Oct 1996 21:12:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Mat the Cat in Green To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Mindspeech/Monarch's Own Message-ID: On Sun, 13 Oct 1996, JAIME HATHAWAY wrote: Well, here's a mix of my opinions and what the group has come up with in frequent past discussions. > 1. What happens to a Herald's Companion when s/he is Chosen as > Monarch's Own? Firstly, it's quite likely that Vanyel was never a consideration as MO. He think he is, but that's his own (I want to say "egotism", but that doesn't fit) opinion. IMO, the MOC knows who the next in line is, in some way. Or rather, that the MOC can tell if someone is in line (so, since Rolan had never seen Talia, and had never seen THE next MO, he had to search for her). But if the MO-to-be needs to be Chosen and trained before the old MO dies, a superficial Choosing occurs. A bond is formed, but not a true Companion bond. Closer to Florian and Karal. So, when it's time for the person to be MO, the MOC Chooses him/her, and the interim Companion goes on to Choose his/her true Chosen. In Jisa's case, getting Chosen wasn't necessary to get her training, since Van and Savil were giving her the same lessons as a Herald-trainee. > 2. Why, after all this time, and after it's been > established(especially in recent books) that Companions can Speak > anyone they choose to, does Rolan not mindspeak Talia? In SR, Florian metions that Rolan has a hard time Speaking to everyone, so he has Karal relay through Florian. So, Rolan can do it if he as to, ala ":Man. Dirk -- Herald:" As for how Florian does it..... . Maybe he's just a very strong Mindspeaker (hey, he could be Joshe, the Seneschal for Randale [*] ) [*] When I was looking for his name, I realized something. Joshe is the Senechal -- MPrice p10 , yet later on sometime, it's mentioned that he's as good or better a Mindspeaker than Vanyel. So, he's a Herald. But why have Tantras as Senechal's Herald then? I guess that he just has different duties. Mat Cat Person, Champion in Green, |"I looked across the battlefield, blood Adept, and God of Procrastination| seeping from my wounds. Hmmmm, well, I don't think swatting meant killing either. Think about the way we use swat, mostly as a warning, (unless of course we're talking about flies) People swat their children, they don't kill them, cats will swat at your hand when they play, not kill it (in most cases, unless you have a particularly rambuncious or meant cat ) I think if they had meant to say kill, they would have said it. I'm sure the swats weren't very pleasant, and probably did hurt, quite a bit, but not killing strength. (I keep thinking of Kero's love taps, or the mental slaps people end up recieving for not paying attention or whatever, but the swats probably hurt more) Point is, I have no idea, but that's just my opinion on the whole thing. Besides, I seriously doubt a Companion would kill the MO. Maybe knock unconscious so she couldn't do anything, yes, but not kill. It just goes against everything we've learned about the Heralds and Companions, that a Companion would kill another Herald, especially the MO. ====================== On Sun, 13 Oct 1996 Soljan-+AT+-aol.com wrote: > Kim writes: > >>::blush:: I know, I know, I'm supposed to be studying for the PSATs but I > *trails off since she really doesn't ~have~ any good excuses* Ack! *laugh*<< > I get to take the PSAT on Tuesday. Me on the other hand, being the stupid forgetful person that I am have forgotten to pay for them on time every year since my freshman year, I'm going to take the SAT this year, without ever taking the PSAT! I'm just oh so brilliant, I really do need to start remembering things like this. Pretyy pathetic. I'm probably going to fail miserably the first time anyways. Now *that* would be kind weird--because if *that* was true, by the time the end of MPrice rolls along, she'd be around fifty or so years old. And--oh, never mind.
