I agree. Personality is very muchly important. (she says by way of finally

I have a pure black kitten I named Morpheus b/c he reminds me of
that particular character in Neil Gaiman's Sandman (Issue ???) when he
appeared in cat form.
My other cats' names are Trelane-- which fits his personality perfectly
since he is "a being of infinite power and questionable behavior" (as are
all cats)--and Mr. Blinkie, who is named after my evil twin's imaginary
friend. The problem arises when I have to introduce them to strangers, who
invariably ask what their names mean and always look confused after the
explanations. Doesn't anybody else read comics, watch Star Trek, and take
their imaginary friends to college with them anymore?

Do they have it in the SFBC? I looked for my Universe catalog, but I
couldn't find it, so I don't know what the club has at this moment. What's
the publisher, and how long is it( just in case I have to get it in
paperback -- I wouldn't touch a 700+ page paperback!)

On the PSAT: I was going to take it, but I'm just too busy. I'm not
required to take it (I'm a sophomore), so I didn't. But I'm taking the ACT
in two weeks, and the SAT the week after that, so I really should be
studying, too. Gotta pass the 1500 mark on SAT -- that's my goal for this
year!

In a case when a Herald is supposed to be Chosen as a Monarch's Own, the
first Companion is only temporary until s/he has to go into the office. And
if a Herald did get Chosen Monarch's Own unexpectedly, I think the
Companion could cope with it; I mean, it's not like the Companion's
former-Chosen died or anything. S/He had a duty to fulfill as something
more than a Herald, but as a Monarch's Own. Granted, Van wasn't Chosen
King's Own, but Shavri was Chosen King's Own because she was a Healer. If
Van posessed a Gift that could come in handy, he might have been Chosen.
Talia was Chosen because of her Empathy, and the Companions somehow knew
that there was going to be some kind of a sitch where she would be required
to use her Gift and that's why she was Chosen QO. But if Talamir hadn't
died, she might have been Chosen by a different Companion to keep her Gift
in check.

And here's another question: Do co-consorts have to share a Monarch's Own,
or does each one have his/her own?

And I also think that the Seneschal's Herald would be sort of an advisor, a
compassionate friend who would provide an ear to listen and a shoulder to
cry on when in demand, kind of like the MO is to the Monarch.

	I agree wholeheartedly! Mists of Avalon is a *great* book. But if 
you have tests coming up, or any big school projects that can't be put 
off, don't get it. It's addictive. While I was reading it, I did nothing 
else but read it, in every class that I could get away with it, as soon 
as I got home, went to my room, and read until midnight (or later) until 
I feel asleep reading it. It's is *wonderful*! Get it in hardback, it's 
over 1,000 pages. I *love* that book!

Huh?  I thought Jisa had not been Chosen and simply would not be until Taver
was available.  Didn't Van have a paragraph or two on that somewhere?
Wondering if she realized her mother had to die before she would be Chosen?
I think the Companions have some kind of foresight about the matter and
leave the person intended to be the MO unChosen until the proper time.

Actually Karal is a man of many, many talents--but you are correct:
Mindspeech is not one of them.  However, he IS a Channel, which gives him
some rather weird capabilities.

Maybe it wouldn't be a problem for Rolan.  Maybe the trouble is that it
would be a problem for Talia.  Mindspeech is something you have to be
trained to live with.  And if there is no power there for you to train,
maybe it is simply too disconcerting to have someone talk in your head when
you have absolutely no way to shield it out.  Look at how much trouble she
has with not being able to shield out Rolan's emotions, and that is a power
that she does have.  The other might simply drive her mad.

I don't agree.  Talia was told by ? that she would usually see only 
images, but if the sending or emotions were strong enough, she would 
be able to hear words..sounds like mindspeech to me.  Also, this 
happened with Ylsa's death.  She was there, and the emotions were 
strong enough for her to hear Ylsa tell Kyril the papers were in the 
shafts of the arrows.

Mon chere fee (wow, look at the rust falling off of that French! it's been a

	I love Q as well!! But he was best in Days of our Lives. Anyone

Another point on the MOC choosing -> remember Jisa wasn't Chosen because
she was going to be the next MO, so no other Companion would bond with 
her. IMO, Van woldn't have made a good MO anyway, cause he doesn't have
much in the way of EMpathy -> he was already acting as an adviser anyway,
what additional good could he have done for Randi as MO?

Good point. I just reread the relevant passages. In Arrow's Flight, while
Taia and Kris are staying in the shelter in the  Forest of Sorrows, the
feeling of being watched and of lurking threat builds over time (several
days? weeks?). It seems as if 'Fandes (and possibly Van?) really aren't sure
if Talia is dangerous or not. In the case of the bandits and brigands, it
would have been pretty obvious that they were up to no good, and needed to be
dealt with severely. In Talia's case, she was a Herald with a Companion, but
with a rogue Gift. It's only when she's really about to lose it that Talia
does feel that "something" may "strike her down". Then:

Arrow's Flight, DAW pbk., pg. 237:
--Somehow she cut off the emotion-storm -- and simulataneous with her
resumption of control, Rolan paced forward slowly, to stand beside her. He
faced, not her, but the watching forest, his whole posture a silent
challenge. 

There was a feeling of vague surprise- and the sensation of begin watched
vanished.--

So two things happened- Talia got it together- proving that she could control
herself to at least some degree- and her Companion made it clear that he was
backing her up- which is a pretty damn good recommendation for anyone's
character!

magnificent men, to be adored and lusted after hopelessly by the Ladies,
occassionally teased by the Lilac Fairy (who must be propitiated with
chocolate and flattery) and observed in the scrying pool, hopefully while
doing something interestingly naughty.

It wouldn't be that weird. If she was 20, and Companions age at the
same rate as humans (I would think so, given the identical gestation
times and that I doubt Heralds outlive their Companions just by
age), then she and Van are around the same age.  After all, she
Chooses him when he's 16.

Ah, but there is the fact that, in AotQ, it's said that most MO are
already Heralds when the MOC Chooses them.  This implies (to me at
least) that another Companion is acting as a "place holder" so
that the new MO is ready when the old one dies.  Talia could be
an anomaly b/c Talamir was murdered, so the Companions hadn't
had a chance to get her Chosen.  Like I said before, Jisa
probably didn't get her place-holder since she was getting
training anyway.  Besides, the Companions probably knew
that Van, Savil, & Co. knew that Jisa would be MO, so they
didn't bother.  (did that last part make sense?)

Ah, but Karal has Florian and Altra talking to him, and Solaris has
Hansa.  It's not that hard for them.  And there's Tarma and Warrl.
So I doubt that that's really a workable reason.  I figure two things:
1) Rolan may just be a weak Mindspeaker, so he can't talk to her well.
2) As leader of the Companions, he's strictly adhering to the 
"Companions hide their powers" rule, as an example for the others.

I just reread "Bloody Sun" by MZB and there is a character named 
Magda in it. In the scene where Elorie is helping Jeff recall 
his memories his foster father took him to a terran named Magda to 
check his injuries before he took him to the orphanage. First name 
only though and no other id. Also this person is worried that she may 
be reassigned elsewhere and, IIRC, Ms Lorne had gone native by the 
end of Thendara House? Oh well, guess I'll have to reread that one now! 
Something to do until I can afford SB, I guess. 

OBMisty: Other than the possible Owlflight, and the two books in that 
other series whose names escape me at the moment, do we know of any 
other books Misty is working on? Maybe she's taking that break **some** 
of us are always on about her needing?

But an MO with a rogue gift is a definite threat to Valdemar no matter what
she swore to do.  Absolutely nothing happens to Rolan if Talia dies, except
he goes out and Chooses another MO.  And Talia's rogue gift could have
killed Kris and Tantris, so killing Talia could have SAVED the life of a
Companion and his Herald.  I'm pretty sure that what Van was saying was that
if Talia had not controlled her gift when she did and if Van had not
intervened on her behalf, 'Fandes would have killed her.

Nope.  I took it for the first time in 7th grade.  I don't think there's
an age limit.

I'm sure I must have. Everybody tells me I watching the show when they
were on, but I honestly can't remember it. Very strange. Q is
my mostest favorite character as well! I have this picture autographed by
John DeLancie that keeps falling off my wall and a t-shirt (Q-shirt?) that
my cat (Trelane) ripped. I was also going to be a member of the Continuum
at a Star Trek convention this summer until the same cat used part of my

Then why would Van have stopped Yfandes from doing it?  Talia was obviously
in need of something like that.  No, I think "swat" is being used in the
sense of "swatting flies."

Not true.  It could happen with a lot less cause.  All it takes is a blind
spot.  Lores almost killed Ghost, remember?  In a sense 'Lendel killed his
own Companion.  If Yfandes truly thought Talia's rogue gift was going to
destroy Kris, Tantris and Rolan, I think she would have favored saving the
three over saving the one.

Yes. The books are definitely good.  All six of her books of the True Game
are some of my most re-read ones.  Buy the onmibus reprint & and if you can
find the Jinian books in a used book store or library, read them.  Or you can
what for the 3-books-in-1 reprint to come out in about 9 months.

to me that I recall something about gryphon-hunting, something that Devon
mentioned to Talia (or whoever her Healer-mentor was..was that his name?)
about gryphons, and gryphon-hunting up north. Given the temperment of teh
gryphons, it wouls seem to me that that would be a minor issue, and one
that should be discussed by T-whashisname...shoot, and here I've lent my
copy to Cath! The T gryphon...leader guy. Him. Oh well...I've lost my

I rather thought of Altra and Hansa as being Karal's and Solaris's Karsite
versions of Companions.  Things work a bit different with them than with
"mere mortals" because they are priests.  Tarma's in pretty tight with her
deity as well.  I think that puts those folks in another category, where
having someone talk in your head is not that strange.  Someone said they
found textevd that Rolan wasn't a strong mindspeaker, yet he's the one who
talks to Gwena all the way from Haven to the Vale and doesn't have a bit of
trouble.  I still think it's Talia who has the problem.

IIRC (its been a while since I read the MP series) there was something about
if you were "in line" so to speak to become MO, your bond with your
Companion (non-MOC) was not nearly as deep. 'Fandes and Van had a very very
strong bond. So, Van was never really in line to be MO. I mean, would you
harness the most powerful Hearld-Mage Valdemar had ever seen to a desk job?!
Come on! :) Van may have thought that he was going to be MO, but who really
understands the mind of the Companions?

Also, Karal was a Channel, maybe that makes a difference. <shrug>

Here's something I've been thinking about...I'm re-reading AotQ, and there's
that little part of the tale that Talia was reading. It tells of Vanyel's
last...stand? <okay, you all have permission to slap me on that one :)..>
and it mentions some Companion named Evalie, and her Herald never gets a
name. However, in MPrice, there is no mention of this other Herald, just
Van, Stef and Yfandes handle the finale. Does this bug anyone else, or am I
the only one?
