I remember Vanyel telling Randale that while she would be a great MO, she would be a terrible Queen. Something about her having empathy that would interfer with ruling. On the subject of Talia getting swatted: I dont think Yfandes would have killed her because Rolan would have interfered before she got that far. I have always wondered though, if Kris couldnt have helped Talia at that point, would Vanyel? He had empathy. I know its possible for the "common" folk to have gifts, they just arent trained. Perhaps Joshe got training from somewhere else? Or is it just that Tantras was Senechals Herald to the pervious Senechal and they decided to keep him in place, even though Joshe was a herald himself? (Did that make sense?) Also, have you ever noticed in the other books that The Senechal is never given a name? They always just say "The Senechal". Thing is, in AotQ, it strictly says that Talia was reading that passage. I think it was either that the writer of that paticular story took quite a bit of creative licesence, or Vanyel and Stephen "interfered" with the story so people wouldnt know Vanyel was in Sorrows. Maybe both. I still skip that part when I re-read AotQ though. ---------------------------------------------- Jacquelle said: . What Gift does Sherril have? I remember Sherrill telling Talia about it the first time she brought Talia out to Companions field, as an explaination to why she had to whistle for Silkswift. It became "unblocked" because she needed to use it to reach Keren after Ylsa death. ----------------------------- Lyn said: >How many people on the list are writers or would-be writers? Would this imply that Felara was somehow different from > the rest (I'm assuming that reincarnated Heralds/Companions would > appear human after death, like Ylsa does) I would like to challenge this assumption. The reason the Heralds look human after death is because they are dealing with humans, and humans tend to be intimidated by pillars of pure light and what-not -- a physical form is necessary for the humans to understand the entity as being the spirit of the deceased. This is a human limitation, not a part of being a deceased spirit. As was noted, Companions generally have at least two incarnations that are close to the surface -- hence, we see them shifting between human and equine from time to time. However, in this universe, multiple incarnations happen, even if the past ones aren't as close to the surface. Ylsa had to appear as Ylsa, or Talia would never have understood. This, Ylsa was pragmatically bound to her last human shape. Felara was not trying to deal directly with Talia -- she was just hanging around with her Chosen -- so was not bound to the form of her last mortal incarnation; Felara could be all of herselves, and thus we note a shifting. Here's a query, though. Do you entities feel that Companions universally know that they are reincarnated Heralds? If they do, do they retain full memories of their past lives (which would explain the overlaid images), or are the memories in the unconcious mind, to act as instinct? An odd notion, too: Since the Companion-Herald bond persists past death (as seen with Yfandes and Vanyel, as well as with Ylsa and Felara), and since the Companions are re-incarnated Heralds, would a Companion, upon death, not seek out the spirit that was his or her Companion during his or her time as a Herald, having simply undergone a brief separation from the Companion-spirit while in mortal (Companion) form? If so, each line of Herald--Companion-was-Herald--Companion-to-Companion-was-Herald-was Herald--et-cetera not lead, necessarily, back to a single Groveborn in each line? Would all these spirits get along together, forming Chosen-Clans in the Havens? ------------------------------ Date: 15 Oct 1996 07:24:39 -0400 From: "Kimber Brumbaugh" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Gifts, Gifts, everywhere Message-ID: *> From: Chris & Sean Talbot *> >I don't agree. Also, she has to be in a trance to be able to get words- it doesn't just come to her naturally since her gift is usually emotions. If you remember, third Arrows book (I think) when she was worried that there was something wrong with Elspeth she could sense that Rolan was worried too and asked him if it was worth trancing down to be able to talk about it and he basically answered no. That's how she was able to hear thoughts when Ylsa died- she was tranced to begin with just to get that far to begin with. Oh, there was something else I wanted to comment on... darn, what was it...? Humm, well about Rolan dieing if/when Talia does... I think it's possible that he might. They do have a very strong bond and just because they don't have to die when their chosen do, doesn't mean that they don't or wouldn't. At the end of MPromise, the Shadow-Lover gives Van a choice--either go to the Havens or return to Valdemar. I think whenever a Herald dies, he/she gets a simialr choice--either go to the Havens or come back as a Companion. If this choice is a conscious one, I don't see how they would forget what they once were. Like the Monarch has a Monarch's Own Herald even though the Monarch is a Herald. Kind of like the D.A. has an Assistant D.A. even though the D.A. is a lawyer. The only other Companion that can do that is Rolan (maybe it's a trait of G-B's). Goodness! I just found the most awesome place yesterday. Me and a couple of my friends(Stephanie and bookworm) went downtown to a used bookstore which was closed when we arrived. So, after must grumbling we decided to just walk down the street and explore a little. We found an antique shop and decided to give it a look. This place is soooo cool! We were browsing around fascinated when stephanie spotted this sign pointing up the spiral staircase that said "New books cheap." Up we went. Folkes we were practically in heaven! It's not huge, but half the upstairs was hardback books! This lady gets them when they sit on the clearance table in the chain bookstores without selling for awhile. I bought 2 hardback books for $2.50 a piece!!!!!! One was an old favourite I already had in paperback, but I also bought "A Song For Arbonne" by Guy Gavriel Kay. All because I've heard so many of you raving about him. SO, GK fans, is this one a good one? IT'S SOMEONE DELURKING! RUN!* Ahem. Hello, I am obviously new to this list, and have a question most here could give opinions on. Are the books that are co-authored with Mercedes Lackey a good read? Why or why not? I saw many of them in a used bookstore the other day, (where I picked up The Oathbound and By the Sword) and need to know if I should whip myself and go back to the store to get the books I left behind. Mind you, I haven't read much of Mercedes Lackey, just the Last Herald Mage trilogy, after a friend pushed them at me and basically threatened with death if I didn't read them. So I took them home, started into the first one, and literally did not leave my room for the weekend. :) Ahri ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 11:17:52 +0000 From: "Vrondi" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-herald.co.uk Subject: Re:Witch World/MZB Message-ID: <199610151522.LAA10052-+AT+-edweb.concord.wvnet.edu> On 15 Oct 96 undine wrote: > Witch World, Web of Witch World, Three Against Witch World, Warlock of > Witch World, and Sorceress of Witch World (talk about typos: the book's > blurb misspells one of the main character's names!!) because the > events in those books are sequential and reading them out of order will > be confusing or at least disjointed, IMHO. I read CG without any idea that it was part of a series. And then when I found GIG was surprised! So, the Witch World eh? Never got an explanation of what the novels were and simply don't see much about it. What are _all_ the novels in order? someone tel me please? Well, at least one of them - _the ship who searched_ with Anne McCaffrey is good; it's a followup to McCaffrey's _the ship who sang_, and is one of the few coauthored follups that is arguably better than the original. I've stayed away from most of the others :-). _ElvenBlood_ with Ellen Guon (sp?) (I think that's the title; it's the second one in the series, anyway) struck me as being second-tier generic fantasy - some of this may be due to not having seen the first book in the series, but it came across as flawed; one part of the book discusses why a particular method wouldn't work - and then a later part relies on it. Evalie was her Companion, and she left with Stef on orders from Van. Maybe Misty changed it when she wrote the LHM trilogy. Writers perogative you know! "We're Starfleet Officers. I said that the historians that wrote the little excerpt, that Talia was reading in her book, were incorrect. > I always thought that Talia was imagining a part for herself in the book -> > besides, if it was Lissa, she wouldn't have but in that part of Van looking > sinister, would she? I didn't think the tale said that he looked sinister, but that he looked 'fey' as if he had seen his death, when the King gave him this task. Of course AotQ got that part wrong/incorrect as well. Since Van chose his last mission, Randale didn't assign it. The consensus seems to be that everyone else feels that Talia was writing herself into the story. When I read that section, it didn't seem that way to me and I had different way of presenting it. I'm not saying the section that Talia was reading in her book was 'Valdemar-historically correct' since we do find out that the historian's weren't particularly correct about anything having to do with magic.
